after a year and a half. finally removed the fender, changed the lights and got ultra low renthals on it... yes for an entire year i was riding with those xmas lights on the back. but now that i started i can't stop.. : )

now i'm thinking about an exhaust any recommendation... I don't want to make it sould like a screaming lawn mower but more with a low rumble. i like the look of the micron but don't know about the sound. what's eveyones input.

I went with the 2brothers carbon. sounds pretty good. i would have went with a akrapovic if it didnt cost so much. here is a good link that has a lot of sound clips:

You're in luck! :nerd I used to have the Carbon Fiber Micron exaust on my first 599. I loooooooooooved it! It sounded so good. It wasn't too loud, didn't make popping sounds, it just growled! I can't speak for other brands, but this one rocked!

I also recommend the micron exhaust, I have one on my 06 and I lvoe it, sounds great and noticeable power increase as well. Plus it flows perfectly with the black paint of the bike. Carbon fiber all the way!

My Hornet came with a Remus carbon fiber exhaust and it sounds good at low (street) speeds. It sounds even better at freeway speeds without being obnoxiously loud.

i'm a hair off a flys ass from getting a carbon fibe scorpion. i was actually liking the two bros. carb fib with the yellow logo 'cos it matched the bike. But the cat at the local shop said i could get a few better hp with the scorpion and i would absolutely not have to remap and jet and all this crap plus scorpion guarantees replacement of the exhaust for a year if you crash and damage it.

Did anyone with a two bros pipe have to do any extra stuff?

Also anyone out there with a D & D exhaust? Or heard anything?

From my experiance and that of others, the Two Brothers will look like total crap in a year or two. I"ve seen it first hand. That's why they are the cheapest.

Cabon Fiber doesn't do that well under UV light anyway. I have a super secret exhaust on order. I may post up about it later but it's not really very relavant to most people on the forum.

A few things that I like about the Scorp is that they will give you a deal if you crash your bike to get a new one.

They also claim that they never need a repack, which is always a good thing. Most people never do it anyway.

The price is reasonable.

Lastly the noise isn't too loud. (or so I hear)

As for me, I went big and bought the....................... Super Sneaky Secret!

My vote goes to the Micron Carbon Fiber Exhaust. It's a biased vote, but it's biased for a reason.

I found a site that sells it for $409, which is a GREAT price for this pipe. AND shipping is included. Here's the link:

i'm more concerned with f'ing up my saddle bag, or melting a tie-down strap and having the bag come loose on a long trip

I don't think the Carbon Fiber pipe gets hot enough to melt saddle bags. I don't think it even gets as hot at the guard part of the stock exhaust.

Just my 2 cents.

You're right that the carbon fiber does not get hot to the touch. Passengers on my bike really like that feature. I ended up putting the factory shield over the exhaust just to make it look a little more stock and to attract less attention.

Such a shame to cover up a nice looking carbon fiber exhaust, isn't it? But such a smart thing to do given how picky the Bay Area cops have been lately.

Attracting less attention! That's what'll keep me from swapping cans for a while. Until I can find one that sounds great AND lets me keep the stock heat shield (for that stock appearance), I'll be sticking with the stock can.

I always thought the Microns looked too big for the bike too. I was leaning toward an FMF before I sold my bike. I think I only found one tidbit of info by scouring the net about the FMF pipe on the 599, and it was positive. I think it said it was a deep sounding can, which is what I would like, and it looks "right", to me, on these bikes.

Early in my exhaustive exhaust search i considered fmf but there was
virtually no info or reference from any other 599ers. I'm still keeping
scorp at the top of my short list but that bronze fmf would look quite extra on a yellow 599 8) . i've kinda ruled out 2bros. I've heard both negative and pos feedback on it but more neg than pos.
As of today my list is:
1 Scorpion

2 blueflame

3 micron

My buddy got a D + D for his 954 and apparantley they make one for the 599 but i ahve heard zero feedback on it. My friends bike sounds sweet
right now but i need to hear something relative to the hornet.

Are you looking for a pipe that compliments the sound of the motor, or just something loud? If you're looking for a nice sounding pipe, get something like a Two Brothers or Micron. If you're just looking for noise, go for the D&D.

A buddy of mine has a D&D, and to me it sounds like complete ass. Just plain loud and pops like crazy on deceleration.

We've imported about a dozen or more now, and are running them on both of our bikes.. The quality is top notch and they sound is great.. the removable DB killer gives you the option of loud or just a deep scream,,, and they're way lighter than stock.
We Haven't brought in any of the megaphone style pictured yet.

Shoot us an e-mail for pricing, and include the model number to keep us un-confused :) I DO NOT recommend getting the race cans - The difference is not have the removable DB Killer, which is a very nice option to have - if you want the race sound, you cut one rivet to remove it, and reinstall it if you like with a sheet metal screw.

My guess is that using a dual exhaust with two large outlets would flow a significant amount more air, creating a lean mix that would border on the unacceptable for the stock ECU. By restricting the outlet holes they probably keep pretty much the same backpressure in the exhaust so it doesn't mess up anything as far as air/fuel ratio is concerned. (Sure you lose any superior performance potential, but you'd have to have another ECU to really take advantage of it anyways.)

Just my humble opinion...and educated guess.

Properly set up carbs run every bit as well if not better than Fuel Injection. Most injection systems use the same standard )good carburation) to try to attain proper performance.

Mapping isn't the same science as the carbs compensating for vacuum and airflow, and it's harder to dial in proper flow for any given condition. Injection does make it easiet to make a change, but the changes aren't always as precise in the outcome.

I can map a fuel injected car and make it run awesome from a dead cold start all the way to operating temp..... all while keeping my block learn the same i.e. 128 and not increasing fuel consumption.... most of the time I wind up taking fuel out of the table right off the back but.... give me a carb and Im lost  :?

I never said anything about one running better than that other...it's just that i associate carbs with ancient Honda Accords and muscle cars, not modern day motorcycles.

My '69 Camaro had a Prochager supercharger with a blow through Holley carb and it ran flawlessly for the two years i owned it. Carbs can be set up to run amazingly well and have some advantages over FI, but generally they require more maintenance and are tricky to adapt to certain engine configurations. The biggest reasons i wanted a bike with FI as opposed to a carb is 1) you don't have to choke it and endure a fast idle for minutes until it warms up (usually even in warmer weather), and 2) winterizing a carb properly is more critical and harder to do than with FI (not much, but a little). I liked the idea of not having to really worry about either one. But as for driveability (rideability?) and throttle response, carbs are hard to mess up while FI can be tricky to get properly dialed in.

So...don't assume that i'm dissing carbs at all. Carbs can be wonderful, but, generally speaking, are becoming outdated as technology moves on.

Newbie question here: Why do you change the pipe? People talk about the improved appearance, sound, and power....which one of these is the main reason for changing the exhaust? Or does that depend on who you ask?

Such a shame to cover up a nice looking carbon fiber exhaust, isn't it? But such a smart thing to do given how picky the Bay Area cops have been lately.
Also, I wonder what Alex meant about the cops. Is it not legal to change the pipe?

p.s. Quick update on my first month as a 599 owner: I've put about 650 miles on it, am getting more comfortable all the time, starting to use the upper RPMs a little, starting to think about mods...really love the bike!

You're right, it depends who you ask.

Technically most aftermarket cans are illegal because of emissions and noise.

djamalt
01-25-2007, 09:00 PM
I'm echoing SSS here by saying it really does depend on who you ask. Some change pipes for looks, some for sound, some for a little more HP, and most (I believe) for a combination of those reasons. As far as legality, decible codes are different in different states (and possibly cities). I think as long as you don't get a super loud pipe, no cop is really going to bother you - unless you're being squidy, in which case the cop will tack on as many violations to your ticket as he can.

Yoshimura makes a full system as well. They offer titanium, aluminum or carbon fiber finish.

The stock header doesn't look that bad, not sure how much would be gained by a full system over a slip-on.

You cannot go wront with a company that's been in business for over 50 years and has exhaust systems on bikes in nearly every major racing circuit.

http://www.leovinceusa.com/

I found them one on closeout:

I ordered the carbon, I'm in the process of what I refer to as "blacking out" my bike. I'm changing all the shiny parts to black or carbon, such as; pegs, levers, mirrors and exhaust. I've already done the mirrors and pegs.

I cannot find a decent pair of black or carbon look levers though.

Anyone have any suggestions?

From my experiance and that of others, the Two Brothers will look like total crap in a year or two. I"ve seen it first hand. That's why they are the cheapest.

Cabon Fiber doesn't do that well under UV light anyway. I have a super secret exhaust on order. I may post up about it later but it's not really very relavant to most people on the forum.

For the record, 2 Bros isn't even close to being the cheapest on the market.

Exhausts are very easy to install. Any novice can install one with a basic set of tools. I installed my Two Brothers in probably two hours from start to finish.

And regarding re-jetting, it depends who you ask, and I suppose it depends what exhaust you get. With mine, I didn't re-jet and it ran as well if not better than with the stock exhaust.

I got a Leo Vince SBK Carbon Fiber exhaust from ridegear.com on closeout for about $325, which is about $150 less than all other decent ones out there.

It sounds sweet, nice low rumble at idle and as loud as you want as the RPM go up. It also helps smooth out the power as you go thru the gears, obvious pickup and torque; also adds about 3-5 HP.

Check this, I didn't know it was a racing pipe when I got it, but when I waas checking the exhaust can out I saw it said "not for road use" stamped in the metal on the bike side of the can :D!!!

I didn't realize it when I got it, but apparently it's a racing exhaust can.

The do tons of testing and research to make sure slip on exhausts go on without having to modify the existing bike.

There's no need to rejet the Leo Vince SBK, their site even says so.

If you don't trust it you can simply wipe out the inside the tip of the exhaust with your finger, if it's run'n rich it will be dark and mine has been clean since day one.

Not to mention, you cannot go wrong with a company that has been building exhausts for over 50 years.

Okay, I took some time to think this one over (cause everyone has thier own favorite brand) ... my following report is utterly non-bias ... and remember this is about BRANDS only , not about he particular part for our bike. I attend a function every monday, and one monday 70 bikes showed up so I was able to spend some time examineing systems from pretty much every MFG. CO. ... here is goes.

Akrapovic was BY FAR the best system IMHO. Why:
The welds on the Akrapovic were FLAWLESS, on every system (5 seperate systems examined). I've done some welding in my time, and these are perfect. The overall fit and finish of the akrapovic is stellar. All carbon fiber parts ... are real carbon fiber unlike some other systems that use knock-offs and look alikes. Of course sound and apperance are going to be a think of personal choice... but for what its worth ... they LOOK like they would be a great product. If I was in the market, its the one I would buy.

I've got something .... erm... special in mind for my exhaust, just working out some details then I'll post a report.

Theres my $0.02

1) Just get the arm welded.
2) Get the Honda header pipes (they apparently do not carry the original... mysteriously... and they won't admit that the part is defective because that would mean a recall... bastards!)
3) Replace the header pipes and muffler with Hindle header pipes and Hindle oval Ti can.

What do you peeps think!?!?! I am so partial to the factory can from an aesthetic point of view... that's the problem I'm facing. Should I just get over it?

Sorry Slide -- overlooked this one. I need to take a look at mine tonight to reorient myself, based on your picture.

I am not sure who produces headers for the 599. I don't think Hindle does, but don't quote me on that.

I didn't mind the appearance of the stock pipe from the RH side, but back and LH side did nothing for me. I upgraded for looks, sound and weight. The stock pipe is an absolute pig when it comes to weight.

Not sure if cost is a factor, but the weld solution must be the cheapest, I would suspect.

Anyway, I'll look tonight to see if I can provide any help regarding that weld, but I think it will boil down to personal preference.

I just got a black D&D slip on and I am very happy with it. I had a D&D on my 2001 R6 and it was obnoxiously loud, So I was a little nervous getting another, but it is clear that over the last few years D&D has made positive strides in refining the sound while reducing the overall volume. The pipe sounds surprisingly deep for a 600 at low rpms, and it gives a noticible boost in horse power. And it looks very cool.

My X-cone was waiting for me when I woke up today. Got it on in under 45 minutes. Let me just say, don't be so quick to cut out that silencer. I started it up with it in and it seemed about perfect for daily riding. I'll probably take it out when I want to have some fun in the daytime, but I think it's going to be nice with it in. Louder than stock, but not obnoxious. It seemed about on par with a stock 06 Gixxer 600, though it might be a little louder when I wind it up.

I'll take a pic if anyone wants one, it's on a black 2006, but I'm on my parents' crappy computer for a while, so I don't really feel like messing with loading and resizing... this thing struggles to load some web pages.

Shouldnt hurt anything..Most pipes dont lean the bike out very much at all. Unless you go with a race pipe... I've been running the XCone on mine for a month or so ( 2000 Miles maybe) with no trouble..I checked the plugs not to long ago..Looked great.

Is the new exhaust much lighter than the original?

Being stainless steel, does it get too hot to touch after a reasonable ride? imagine someone's leg on it for example?

Otherwise I'd love one...

MUCH Lighter than stock..

And MIVV uses an outer sleeve to isolate the outer section from Heat - It gets warm, but not Hot that I've ssen. Could one of you riders who own the X-Cone run it and verify for me?

JHenley17
10-08-2007, 10:01 PM
It's a ton lighter than stock. I'm not very good at estimating weights from feel or anything like that, but I could tell that the MIVV was several pounds lighter. Stock is surprisingly heavy.

As far as heat, I can't remember and the bike is at my house 150 miles away right now, but I know it was definitely hotter to the touch than stock. I don't think I was able to hold my hand to it. It hasn't been a problem for me riding, but I can't speak for someone on the back seat.

Any pipe is gonna be hot after a decent ride. The stock pipe has the
big heat shield so passengers aren't burned but it still gets warm.
Yeah the X cone gets hot but i don't usually ride with a passenger so it
hasn't been a prob with me. I love the X cone and wish there was a

On my 919, the X-Cones can get mighty toasty to the touch on the narrower forward cannister section. However around the rider and passenger leg areas, the cones are tucked in rather nicely inward of the bike's body work. I'm sure the 599's single cone is placed similarily. I wouldn't recommend saddle bags. And yes, the heat can reheat your coffee.

Am I the only one with a Fuel Exhausts slip-on ?
Mine is a stainless round design, nice and light, looks and sounds great. I don't remember the $, but it was very reasonable. It came with a welded link pipe. It's muffler section is riveted (instead of welded) so you can replace the packing down the road if necessary. Their baffles are removable, a little louder than stock w/baffle in, nice and loud w/baffle out. I actually modified my baffle by shortening the "neck", adjusting the db's to a pleasing loudness.
They have very good customer service, and a good website with Hornet 600 pix, and different styles to choose from.

Nice find. I've never even heard of them, but they look nice. Did you have to ship from the UK? Seems like that might have been a little high... I can remember buying just a Ferrari flag and having to pay like $25 to ship it from Italy in one of those big envelopes.

Which color did you go with?

djamalt
11-04-2007, 10:13 PM
I'm loving the grey scheme to their carbon pipes. Might be another option to consider. Can you explain what you did to the baffle in a little more detail?

Opticycler
11-05-2007, 06:27 PM
Yes, it was purchased/shipped from the UK, I don't remember the shipping cost, but I believe the total cost (Pipe and Shipping) was around $340 U.S. dollars a couple years ago. I got their least expensive round stainless design and have been very happy with the quality and fit. It took about 20 minutes to R&R.
The baffle has a neck, or pipe that goes inside the muffler about 5 inches, and I basically cut the length in half, this made it a little louder than the stock length baffle. I may go a little shorter still. I don't know how much louder it will get. The baffle diameter hasn't changed, and I'll bet that controlls db levels more than length, allthough I'm no expert.

DISCLAIMER: I accept no responsibility for any negative effects from these ideas, however, I will accept full credit for any positive results that may occur.

I choose the Micron because of its deep mellow sound and solid construction without rivets to rattle. The standard extension pipe removes the catalytic converter.

I understand that D&D is the loudest. I have heard both pros and cons about Two Brothers but it is the cheapest.

The horsepower increase is mostly in your head because of the louder sound. Just know that the Hornet will can keep up with anything on the road regardless of a stock or after market exhaust.

I've got the two bros carbon can. I think it looks the business, nothing like it. That said, i don't think you should expect much HP from this or any other slip on pipe alone, unless you're also going to rejet, filter, etc... I think Honda has some pretty efficient stock exhausts on their street bikes. It is A LOT lighter than the stock exhaust, and that is weight up high, where you can feel it.

Sound... well, it sounds MEAN! Much, much more rumble than the stock pipe. And fairly loud, a bit too loud for my taste, but I'm constantly going back and forth between loving how bad-ass my bike sounds to being annoyed by the noise... I occasionally consider going back to the stock exhaust, only because I spend a lot of time in traffic and this pipe seems loudest at low RPMs (<~4,000), It doesn't really bother me at all above that.

I've only had it for just over a month now, so I can't say how long until the carbon starts to look bad (I know all carbon fiber eventually does if left in direct sunlight, harsh weather, etc)

FWIW, ridegear (http://www.ridegear.com/rg/item/F-20212/Two-Brothers/M2-Oval-Canisters-Honda-599.html) still has them on sale, thats where I got mine.

Billy from Philly
02-20-2008, 07:07 AM
Thats why I chose Micron. While it is very deep and mellow at low RPM, above 6,000 the thing gets real angry and nasty. All of these things get louder and louder with age as the vent holes get clogged. Also, the Micron can be serviced by the owner and repacked or cleaned out, not having to be sent back to the manufacuturer. Some are just throw aways. Further, you can easly replace the cover to carbon fiber, stainless, Titainium. by just ordering the part from Micron.

That's the point of the DB Killer. Take it out and the thing really does roar. I rolled without plugs today and my ears were ringing like crazy. With plugs, it just sounds great. Just pick one and don't look back, you'll be happy. Those are all great choices. If you want to be different, Blue Flames aren't as common over here from the looks of this thread. Or do my dream and get a Micron for a 06-07 Gixxer or something and have someone make some mounts and bend a midpipe for you.

OK, Im stumped! i cannot decide on what to get now...... :banghead
I like the two bros M2 carbon, and the Mivv X-cone and Carbon, hell even the scorpion is nice, and the Blue flame (but cant find it online to order).
i want to have a nice sound, not to loud, and not to wimpy. Im sooooo confused :thinking
Hello! My first post on Honda599.com 8). I've got a nearly new Two Brothers M2 carbon I'll sell for a very good price if you're interested. I ordered a MIVV carbon oval before even getting my Hornet. The original bike I thought I was going to get fell through and the one I ended up getting instead already had the Two Bros on it. The bike only had 1790 miles on it and the guy who owned it said he put the pipe on it about 500 miles back so it's pretty much new really. Perfect shape with all hardware and even the original 2-Bros box it came in. If you're interested let me know. I'd sell it pretty cheap since I have no need for it. I just put on the MIVV a week or so ago and was planning on sticking the 2-Bros up on Craigs List after I got a chance to take a few pics of it. I also have a Givi windscreen in perfect condition if anybody's interested...

BTW, Honda599.com is a great little site. I've been lurking here for a few weeks since I first started looking at the Hornet about a month or so ago.

How do you like that MIVV carbon oval? Not too loud, is it? I'm looking for a pipe but I don't want one that will make me deaf/get cops called on me for disturbing peace. I like how the Leo Vince sounds (and I like that heat shield it comes with), but the place I found it for the lowest price is bike bandit, and I've heard some pretty bad things about them. Low prices don't mean a thing if they don't get you the right part and have crappy return service.

If the X-Cone is any indication, a standard can won't be too loud with the silencer in and very loud with it out. Just don't drill it out.

I used to ride a Marauder with Cobra slipons (not drag pipes, though) that I put on after discovering a leak in my stock pipes, and according to the guys at the bike shop I do business with, Marauders with slipons are probably one of the loudest bikes they've heard...and I listen to metal...so, I'm probably already deaf, I just don't want to be deafer. 8)

I sent a "price match request" to morepowerracing.com on the Leo Vince pipe to see if they'll meet the bike bandit price. We'll see, I guess. I wish there were more info/pics/amazing before and after youtube videos for the MIVV carbon oval so I could make a more informed decision.
