I just wanted to introduce a little mod that will (hopefully) protect your hands from the cold winds in the winter months.

I'll get a pair, right after you do :) If you say they work well.

 I'm super tempted to get these, but I don't have the money to spend on accessorizing these days.

Tai, if you do get them, please let us know how you like them.

That looks pretty nice. I thought they'd look dorky but those aren't bad. The problem is that I use barend mirrors so I don't know where they'd mount.

Easy fix mate. Just buy a small bolt at the home depot to go in where the original mirrors were.

I just bought those suckers. My total with shipping was $103.44

I'll let everyone know how they work when I get them. It's so cold out right now, if they work like they should it will be well worth the money.

That's awesome Steve! Definitely let us know how they work and take a pic or two. :thumbsup

I’m just ribbing, my winter gear is a sweat shirt and non perforated leather gloves. If I needed thoes hand guards, I'd probably put her up for the season. A bigger puss you've never seen.

Well I got them. The NC hand guards that is. They work pretty good. My only complaint is the plastic screws that came with guards. It didn't take me long to snap one. Lucky for me I had some 1/4 5/8 screws on hand to replace them with.

They come on and off in seconds which is a big advantage over most dirt bike guards.

I'll post pics later.

If you do use the plastic screws. Tighten on the flat head side and not with a wrech on the nut side.

They are a tad larger than I thought... :D So you say they really work?

Super Sneaky Steve
10-24-2006, 06:17 PM
They sure do. I felt almost no wind on my fingers, just a little on the top of my hand. It won't make you toasty warm, but with a warm glove you'll have a winning combo.

hmmmm yes they are bigger then I was thinking tooo

I changed my mind

Super Sneaky Steve

Sure, I'll do that when I get home. All you do is take the mirrors off, put the bracket over the hole then put the mirrors back on.

One thing that people do with things like the windshield and these guards is paint the inside of them black. That way they are shiney from the front and no longer clear, if that's your bag.

I was surprised that they were bigger as well. That's a good thing. The whole point of getting them isn't a fashion statement. It's winter survival. I wouldn't mind if they were bigger still.

Hey, Steve.

Are you still using those handguards?

I've been trying to ride on these "spring" days we've been having in Chicago, but my hands need to be a little warmer to enjoy it. I'm wondering if they are helping when it is 30-40F?

Super Sneaky Steve
01-05-2007, 05:13 AM
Yes, I still use them and they do help. They don't work as good as a full guantlet. I used guantlets on my sport bike because the mirrors wheren't mounted to the bars.

It still depends on how warm your gloves are, how fast you go, and how cold it is. I think they are worth getting because they are easily removed, but I'd still like a full wrap around guantlet for anything below 40.

... wrap around guantlet for anything below 40.

Are you talking about those "hippohands" things?

Super Sneaky Steve

Yes, Hippos hands are a custom made kind. There are cheaper generic kinds.

Seems like a lot of work to go riding in the cold. If it gets that cold i'd much rather just hop in the car... (Of course i am a sissy, and only ride down to the mid 40's or so...but only if it's sunny. ;) )

My post is kinda "tongue in cheek"... think having those things on a bike is worse than wearing a plastic trash bag for a rain jacket (I'd rather get wet and take my chances with pneumonia)... BUT as life goes, they probably are very practical and work quite well.

Super Sneaky Steve

My gauntlets worked awsome. But as you can notice on the Z750 in the picture there, the mirrors were mounted on the fairing. With our bikes this makes it hard.

Maybe cut a hole in the gauntlets then screw the mirrors into the hole? When you're so cold you can no longer work the leaver then looking cool takes a back seat to staying warm.

Steve, go to the link, he had to make his own because no one else's "muffs" would accommodate the bar end mirrors that he also has mounted...

Yeah, guess if you can't move your fingers something’s got to be done... I'm thinking a car? But if you are having fun then that's all that counts. I've driven in 40-45 degree temps for an hour or so with my standard winter/rain gear only adding a pair of glove liners like you'd use to snow ski (that I purchased when someone dragged me to Mt. Brighton as a matter of fact! Now that is FUN! Double Diamond here I come! ) and seemed just fine. Oh and a thingy that covers my neck/chin that I use if it is even below 70...

Like if the temp drops to 35 is it like exponential in difference in cold or are y'all going out for half/full day rides? What do you boys on snow mobiles do up there, I don’t recall it being that bad the few times I did it and it is usually below 30 when you do that…then again it's a bit more physical and can't see doing 65mph on one of them for an hour either so…

I think you got it right about the sleds. From my experiance riding up north on quads in the winter that it's a lot of work and the speeds are much slower. It really sucks trying to push a machine when it's stuck in 5 feet of snow. Mostly 1st and 2nd gear riding on the trials so about 30mph and under.

Yes, a car would be smarter, but it's not cooler. And what's the sense of existing if you can't be cool? 8)

It might seem a bit late for this, but we're getting snow flurries today with temps in the 30's, so what the heck.

I put a pair of PowerMadd Star guards on a few weeks ago because I like the look. A little weird, a little punk, but nobody ever accused me of being a conformist! 8)

Anyway, check 'em out at PowerMadd's (http://www.powermadd.com) web site. On the front page, they are the pair shown with the holes. I got the extenders that make the top rise up higher (good because they had to be mounted under the controls) and the small mirrors that mount on the outside ends. The holes will allow for airflow over your hands in warmer weather.

For you fashionistas, my pair is in blue and black, which matches my helmet and bike. My wife says they make the bike look like something Batman would ride. How bad can that be? :D

Super Sneaky Steve
04-05-2007, 09:04 PM
Why would you get ones with holes in them? Arn't you getting them to block wind? :?

jfeagin
04-07-2007, 08:13 PM
It's like Gore-Tex, Steve. Blocks large wind droplets while letting out small fart droplets!

Actually, the Star guards come with inserts to cover the holes, and I got the extenders that make them even bigger. The holes will be nice in the summer so I can leave the guards on with the extra mirrors.
