View Full Version : your gear
lo39cal 10-09-2006, 01:21 PM what's your riding gear consist of? i currently have a A* TZ1 jacket, SP2 gloves and sturdy over the ankle leather boots. i have zero protection on my lower half and it worries me. i went out and got a pair of TPRO full armour pants @ $160. they felt comfortable when i put them on, but when i started walking the knees started falling down ( these pants were the tighest that i could fit). i ended up returning them. i'm think about getting leather pants, but never wore a pair before. leather pants... yeah, i just don't know about wearing leather pants  . anyways, my legs are still unprotected and looking for a better way. i'll probably just go with knee/shin pads, but i also want some hip protection.
I have a Frank Thomas leather suit (in Yellow and Black)
http://www.cyclegear.com/images/ftl218219sil_310x712.jpg
I don't wear the pants that often though. Most of my riding is comprised of commuting to work, so I wear Joe Rocket Alter Ego overpants (which I love) over my jeans. Feels like good protection.
I have Joe Rochet gloves, which I also love:

Dianese Sport Touring Boots - surprisingly comfortable:

Oh, and I have a Scorpion EXO-400 helmet. Black. I like it as well.
pricelister 10-09-2006, 06:27 PM HJC CL14 Helmet - Red for visibility. (Fit and price were right!)
Rev'it R59 Gloves These are Great!
Joe Rocket Meteor 5.0 jacket I wouldn't buy this one again.
Power-Trip Mesh Jacket: White, Silver Red. I like this one alot! Snaps to my belt, sleeves tighten on my arms very nicely to prevent movement.
Bohn Adventure Pants under my jeans. They fit well under normal jeans and give me an extra later with padding. Not leather, but they make me feel better.
I just ordered a pair of Triumph Expedition boots to replace the Timberland hikers I have been wearing. I'll let you know what I think.

There's nothing to be torn about » get leathers. If you can't afford leathers, buy mesh, but don't risk losing your skin.

Just do it, for real they will last you and protect you. In life there are places to save money and places to spend it…this is a spend it place. (Tires too IMHO) Try them on at the local bike super store (all brands fit different) then jump on eBay. $250-300 should be about right for a middle of the pack setup.
Oh, and make sure they are color coordinated with your bike, helmet, boots and gloves. Very important. Nothing more ridiculous than a man clad in Red, White and Black leathers riding a Yellow bike....nothing.
MotoGPFan26 10-13-2006, 09:56 PM Here's my gear as of right now...Gonna have to get my bike color changed though. My 599 is yellow...and i had already bought my gear planning on a silver bike. Guess I'm going to have my fairings repainted silver.

MotoGPFan26 10-14-2006, 09:29 AM Nice looking set!
Thank you very much. From the minute I started thinking about riding a bike, my own personal safety was always my first concern. It seemed like most of the more adult dominated forums I went to tended to suggest having your gear prior to your bike.
I thought that was a great idea. So, I bought all my gear first. I bought what I like as far as color is concerned. Now, I see it's not going to match my bike.
But, then again, Dani Pedrosa is riding an black and orange bike...so he doesn't exactly match either. I've really started thinking about keeping my bike yellow...for VISIBILITY. I'll just look odd wearing blue and silver gear on a yellow bike.
But...my bike will look good. I really really like the yellow.
cesu pro 10-14-2006, 11:28 AM i'd say silver and black gear is better than yellow gear,.... it is more neutral if you ever change bikes.... it matches everything..
i dont think it looks bad on a yellow bike either, so no worries, it's protection man
Getting gear is definitely a wise decision. Don't worry about it not matching the bike... really, don't. :)
MotoGPFan26 10-14-2006, 07:40 PM Getting gear is definitely a wise decision. Don't worry about it not matching the bike... really, don't. :)
Yeah...but I'm really thinking my helmet is going to stick out like a sore thumb against my bike...Don't know if that is good or bad yet though...I might really enjoy the contrast between my gear and my yellow bike.
Matt W. 10-14-2006, 08:13 PM Arai is the only helmet that fits me right.
I had a Doohan rep until I destroyed it. Now I'm sporting a Schwantz rep.
I've got a Joe Rocket Blaster? jacket for commuting. 1pc. Teknic's for the track.
I had Alpinestar S-MX Plus boots. Now I have Sidi Vertigo Corsa's. Great protection, but I wouldn't reccomend them for street. Too fragile, really.
Also Alpinestar back protector.
lo39cal 10-15-2006, 09:58 PM just updated all my riding gear. got a pretty good deal at motostrano.
just ordered;
-A* TZ1 jacket
-A* 2006 track pants
-A* SMX3 gore tex boots
free shipping on orders over $100.
total= $779.50
i'm not brand loyal or anything, but wanted to get a two piece that zips together and boots for under a $900. if had the money i would have bought vanson. BTW motostrano is having a closout sale. motostrano is only about 30 min. away, but didn't feel like going out there. went to cyclegear today and tried everything on, then ordered from motostrano.

Granted... I bought most of my gear at Cycle Gear. (It was 15% off that day... couldn't pass it up.)
As far as Motostrano goes, I've stopped by there a couple of times and they do have a great selection of stuff. I don't find them very friendly though.
lo39cal 10-16-2006, 11:56 AM yeah, i know what you mean alex. (motostrano) i didnt' find those guys to be too friendly either. that's why i ordered through the internet instead of going to their shop. well, can't their prices. now that i think about it, the people at cyclegear are pretty damn friendly. i dont know if they work on commission, but compared to motostrano guys...
Raul here works at Cycle Gear. He helped me pick all my gear and hooked me up with a discount too. He used to work in the Redwood City Cycle Gear, now he's in San Jose. If you're ever in that store, find him.

Of course i guess you gots to be some kind of crazy to ride an R1... ;)
Nah...just funnin' ya. :D
pricelister 10-20-2006, 09:22 PM I received the Triumph Expedition Boots I ordered. Apparently they have been "upgraded" to a new model for 2007 so I had to get them from a dealer in Denver for 200 bones. The boots are comfortable, rugged, look good, and ride well. Just what I was looking for. They also look very similar to Alex's Dianese boots with some detail changes. I suspect there are two or three companies that make most of the boots for the larger brand names.

Yeah, the HJCs are great helmets for the money (check newenough.com for absolute lowest prices on them) but after trying a few Arai I realize just how bulky they are compaired to the more expensive ones. My only worry about the Arais and Shoeis is having them stolen since they are such high profile brands.

Lots of armor, lots of adjustments, and removable thermal liners. So far they've been great from the heat of August to the cold of February.
Boots are X-element cruiser boots. Heavy leather with velcro closures. Good fit, very comfortable. Got 'em for half off. But I don't much care for walking around in heels.
Got a pair of Olympia winter gloves with gauntlets and "windtech" inside. Not as warm as I'd hoped. Cheap, no-name summer gloves lasted a couple of months.
Helmet is a 3/4 M2R in metallic red.

Great jacket though, with removeable insulated liner and waterproof liner, all kinds of vents, snug fit, armour. Saw the quality in the liners – all the seams are taped.
AleX better snug than loose – nice jacket. My last jacket was looser and the buffeting was annoying as hell.

This is my friend (right) and I (left)... In our riding apparel as we go to and from work... yes a little odd... and we get some funny looks.
There is a guy here in vegas on a asphalt '04 that I've seen several times on my way home from work.... I've talked to him twice but we're allways in traffic and I can never talk to him long enough to get e-mail addy or anything.... he probably thinks im insane away riding like that.
OH BTW: Anyone here who complains about heat can kiss my ass.... try a leather riding jacket AND a bullet proof vest in a las vegas summer.... THATS HOT.
JHenley17 09-24-2007, 09:59 PM Are you a cop or a rapper?
That's what i'm missing to complete my riding gear...a gun and cartirdge belt! Perfect! ;)
Sweet pants and boots.
What kind of pistol is that, btw?
"Sweet pants and boots.
What kind of pistol is that, btw?"
Everything from the belt down is work uniform. We have to wear black BDU pants bloused into the boots.
We're both using a Glock 17 ... within the next few weeks we'll be getting expandable batons and OC, so that will be more crap I have to carry, and if I wipe out and rupture an OC canister...thats not going to be fun
oh..
"Are you a cop or a rapper?"
I am neither... I am the unimportant flashlight cop...and yes, I love doughnuts!
I thought that looked like a glock...but i didn't want to hazard a guess and look stupid or sound ignorant.
I like the BDUs and boots...great biker gear.

I've gotta find a way to mount my samurai sword to my bike...
02KBGT 09-25-2007, 05:16 PM Is that an Issued Clock? Hust curious.. Everyone wants the 9mm for some reason..I guess because its NATO...Dunno.. I have 2 BTW and Love them both. a 23 and a 26..Yea, I have a 9 too..lol But like the 40 WAY better
vthoky 09-25-2007, 06:42 PM I've just "discovered" the .40 cal. I like it, though I don't like my brother's Glock. :?
No its not issued...we're allowed to get what we want from a pretty wide list... I chose the 9mm because the balistics are very similar to 40 cal when using high quality amno (we're required to use CCI spear gold dot), and it doesn't kick as hard...I just enjoy it, I'm a firm beliver in you have to use whatever works good for you.
02KBGT 09-26-2007, 05:02 PM Very true..I once had a pistol I didnt like very much (S&W Sigma) therfore I never shot it..Sold it shortly after... A friend just bought a Sig .45. I thought I'd love to own a Sig until I shot it... I've come to find that a Glock is the only Handgun I'll ever like..lol
Personally i think the sig .45 is one of the easiest to shoot(for me)...and that's why it's the only pistol i own. (Well, that and buying pistols get expensive fast.) But that's just my own opinion...
Of course a 9 is easier in general, but i haven't shot as well with them in the past. But then again it's not like i've shot more than a couple different ones...
02KBGT 09-29-2007, 07:25 AM Yea, Most people LOVE the Sig..Not really sure why I didnt like it TBH...One hting though, After owning the Glocks. I am finding it harder and harder to like a Pistol with a bunch of buttons and gadgets on it... The Glock is Super simple, Super safe, And just feels good.. Dont have to worry about hitting buttons or levers when you wanna fire it.. Just point and shoot. lol And IMO its gotta be one of the safest handguns out there..
That's one thing i had to get used to on the sig...no 'safety' switch. I don't exactly remember as it's been a while since i was really into buying guns, but it has something that keeps the firing pin from contacting the casing unless you pull the trigger. So the downside is you can't lock the trigger, but the upside is that it will never go off unless the trigger is pulled (dropped, jarred, etc). Didn't feel as safe to me at first, but now that i've gotten used to it, it makes a lot of sense.
The Sig may not be as simple as the Glock, revolvers, or DAO guns, but Sigs are not very complicated. Break-down lever, decocking lever, and slide release. No traditional safety but I think Sigs are inherently safer than, say, a 1911 which has two "safeties."

zagato 08-23-2011, 03:39 AM I'm watching Craig Fergusons special so I know you all arent that small. On the other hand, He keeps talking about his cock. Im a bit drunk and half paying attention, but I keep hearing something about 6 inches? From what I understand, The general rule is, chicks divide by 3. "I've only been with 3 guys" really means 9 guys. Guys multiply by 3. "Dude I dont even remember" usually means 3 or less so I assume. Doing the loose, drunken math, I come up with a mean measurement of 2 inches!
Now I understand why you Scottish fucks are so involved in whiskey and racing.
Liquid courage and an inferiority complex!
Kisses. :D

brickm3 08-23-2011, 01:10 PM I'm just getting started with my gear.
Scorpion Exo-1000 Gloss Black... really enjoying this helmet. Fits GREAT, and has the drop down sun visor (helps if you have glasses or don't want to tote around sunglasses/extra visor)
Joe Rocket Atomic 4.0 Jacket... Not bad, think I'm liking it less and less though.
Power Trip Grand National Gloves... No complaints.

Jacket: Cortech GX Air Series 2
Back: Icon Field Armour Vest
Pants: Jeans...
Gloves: Mechanix M-Pact Fingerless Gloves
Boots: Xelement Riding Boots
I want to get a few pairs of Shift Torque Jeans, a pair of either (or both) the Cortech GX Air 2 Gloves or Cortech Injector Gloves, and a better pair of boots. I haven't decided on which boots I want yet, I just might even try my hand (or feet i guess) at a pair of those BiLT boots that Cyclegear's startin to carry...
quadracer 08-23-2011, 06:13 PM Helmet: Arai Corsair V
Jacket: Speed and Strength "Moment of Truth" textile
Boots: Teknic Chicane
Gloves: Alpinestars SP-2 (gone after my crash, mysteriously..), Firstgear Street mesh with CF knuckles.
Suit: Flea-bay special, now toast. Made somewhere in Smurf-land.
carlitos_92 08-23-2011, 07:25 PM Helmet: Shoei RF-1000 in metallic black, nearing the end of its lifespan. It smells like a freaking shoe. Replacing with a RF-1100, probably with white-based graphics. The sooner the better.
Jacket: Olympia Airglide or something like that. Holding up like a brick whorehouse. I wish it would die because I'd like a leather jacket, and I can't afford Transient-levels of "multiple gear syndrome." I want to try a Dainese, but we'll see...
Gloves: Cortech or Tourmaster that are falling apart. Holes in the fingertips. They gave a good effort, but I'll be replacing them pronto. I think if I went down in them, they'd turn to dust.
Boots: Alpinestars Ridge Waterproof. Also holding up like the proverbial brick house. Great boots. Have 20,000 miles on them at least, and if I washed them, they'd look new.
Pants: Olympia Airglide. I like them, but I gave them up when it hit 105F and stayed there. Will put them back on in the fall.
JBarx 08-23-2011, 08:23 PM I guess I never played this game either.
Helmet: Shoei Multitec Modular
Gloves: Alpinestars SP2, Joe Rocket Atomic 2.0 Honda
Jacket: Joe Rocket Superhawk Honda
Pants: Joe Rocket Alter Ego
Suit: Alpinestars RC-1
Sliders: Alpinestars GP, Woodcraft Klucky Pucks
Boots: Puma Desmo
Helmet - RF 1100 to replace the RF 1000 that the road smashed holes in with my head still in the helmet. Knocked me out cold but kept my head in one piece.
Gloves - Motoport kevlar gloves summer weight, have a pair of winter gloves that are decent but will be replaced this year.
Boots - Alpinestars SMX-4's or something like that, my accident split the seam on my left foot, and my foot hurt for weeks after my accident, but I broke no bones and bought the same type of boot again.
Suit - Motoport Riva jacket zipped to a pair of motoport pants in stretch kevlar. Will not need to buy another suit for years and this is post crash - I had the pants repaired after they cut them off me but the suit worked like a charm.
I think gear makes all the difference if you really go down in preventing injury or death.
JHenley17 08-24-2011, 02:35 PM Helmet - Arai RX-Q in Frost Black. Scorpion Exo 400 with blue Tsunami graphics still hanging around as backup. I wish I could wear my girlfriend's Exo 700 with white Dahlia graphics, but it's too small...
Jackets - White Dainese Laguna Seca, Blue/Silver Alpinestars Stunt 2, White Scorpion Cool Rod
Gloves - Teknic Speedstar short in black, Frank Thomas XTi in black (utter shit), Cortech Scarabs for the winter.
Pants - Frank Thomas XTi
Boots - Sidi Vertigo
And some Alpinestars knee armor if I ever feel like I'm going on a spirited ride in jeans. I'd also like to add a Bionic jacket when I start track riding again.

a4naught 12-13-2011, 07:39 PM Bump. Where did SID go? No word on whether the doors and friends are short or he is tall…*sigh*
I'm impressed with the number of RF-1000/1100 represented so far. Just got one myself (yay, it actually fits!) But, until I pick it up in the next couple days, I got:
Scorpion EXO-400 with crap tons of reflective bling tape.
Olympia Airglide jacket and pants (for most of the scorcho SoCal year), the top in eye poke neon.
Tourmaster Transition2 in eye poke for "cold" weather (hey, I'm a French fry, not a potato)
Cortech Adrenaline gloves (Lee Parks shorty deerskin for when I'm feeling lucky, my first pair, if you don't count the old Army gloves).
Sidi Jasmine boots.
I do have a few other dups, like rain/cold weather gloves, and a perf leather teknik jacket (that ive been trying to sell forever–anyone's girlfriend need some gear?) but those are my main stays. For now.

Now that's a list of gear. Most of you young'uns are supporting the economy more so than I.
I go for the adequate gear. Something with pads The AGV pants were less than $100 delivered plus I wear a 20 dollar pair of Nike pants underneath on cool days. The jacket was also right around 100 bucks. I did splurge there because I have a perfectly good jacket but it didn't match the pants.
I have spent just over 1000 since 2005 on helmets and clothing, Now the other big expense has been 25 sets of tires since 2004. I have saved a bit since I change my own tires. So with 5000 on tires, 12000 on bikes, 1000 on gear and gas to put in 100000 miles, I guess I've did my share to help the economy. 3000 dollars a year to not be a cager.
Hey, I'm applying for a green card, I have to prove that I contributed to the economy.
Yeah, it's a lot of gear, but I bought it out necessity over the course of 4 years in order to ride pretty much all year round on the street and the track.
carlitos_92 12-15-2011, 10:31 AM 3000 dollars a year to not be a cager.
And it is easily worth so much more than that. :thumbsup
