View Full Version : Virginia -- Blacksburg
vthoky 10-09-2006, 06:29 PM Any other Hornet owners near Blacksburg VA?
I'm likely close to being finished riding for the season (it's getting toward winter, and I'm not a cold-weather guy), but it'd be good to know others in the area anyway.
tomacana 10-18-2006, 08:19 PM I'm in Gatlinburg. Did you post a messge somewhere about riding the dragon and the Cherohala Skyway?
I likewise am a fair wether rider, although I put 2000 miles on my 2004 Hornet last Janurary in the 60 degree days. I like to ride up near Sneedville TN.
Get this way, let me know. tomacana@netscape.com. Name Tom Vance
vthoky 10-19-2006, 04:35 AM I'm just outside of Blacksburg. I haven't posted about the Dragon and the Skyway, but I do hear frequently about the Dragon from other local riders. Haven't gotten to go yet.
I did get to put a few miles on yesterday -- home and work are close together, so I sneaked home at lunchtime and got the Hornet out, and then took the long way home after work. It was a beautiful day out.
When I get back this evening, I'll take a look at the maps -- where's Sneedville?

tomacana 10-19-2006, 09:53 PM Good to get the reply. Sneedville is about ten mikes for the Virginia border and about 30 miles back from the junction of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Good riding near Hyway 70,66,63 and 33
I'm hoping to get out this weekend and see the colors. Up that way or eat to NC and the Blue Ridge. It will be a 2up on my VT1100 Shadow.
The pic I changed to is a shot taken on the dragon.
Good riding. enjoy,
Tom
vthoky 10-20-2006, 07:37 PM Found it! Sort of between Johnson City and Knoxville (sort of), and a bit further north.
I considered going over to the Parkway again tomorrow... may be a great ride, may be chilly, may be crowded. Tomorrow is also Bridge Day over in WV... that'd be a good trip as well. I think a couple of the guys at work may be making that trip.
Enjoy your ride this weekend!

rndthought 10-23-2006, 03:02 PM Humph. I hate all of you and respectfully request that you do not flaunt how easy it is for you all to have fun. :D
Y'all that live up there... how much time is left in the riding season this year before we are looking at "unfun" temperatures (reliably) and when do you think it will again start to be viable in the spring?
tomacana 10-23-2006, 11:20 PM Hey Rnd,
The cold season is here now. I rode up till mid Dec the last 3 years and put 2000 miles on my Hornet last Janurary and that was just just day rides. If you plan a ride in E. Tenn and don't have sinsce enought to cancel then you may have to layer up and still freeze.
If you don't like the weather in E Tn just wait a day or two, it'll change.
It's in the mid 30's right now. The weekend was beautiful and ther was lots of bikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway even at 6000 ft above sea level. Most riders were bundled up at that elevaation.
From now till Mid March, I look at flat land routes so that if it looks like we may have 60 degree weather in the afternoon, I can suit up and ride.
To realistic, now until April is cold to cool and planned trips can be horrible.
Cold and raining. For people like me that can go at the drop of the hat, I will have plenty of day rides except Dec, Jan and Feb
Hope that helps.
Good Day,
Tom

Tom, did I not just ask you to stop doing that :D
Thanks for the info, I've done some hiking up there and always wanted to take the bike. Guess I've missed another season :( so will wait for spring.
Or maybe not....who knows 8)
vthoky 10-25-2006, 04:56 AM I'm only about three hours' drive from Tom, and today's definitely not a Hornet day. My thermo is showing 35 degrees right now. Brrr. I may sneak a ride in on a warm weekend day, but for the most part my riding is done for the year.
What was I thinking, buying a new bike in August? :? Only two months' worth of good riding weather left at that point.
rndthought 10-25-2006, 08:03 AM I'm about 12h from both of you (optimistic if riding the Hornet). Man that would be a long day  would definitly invest in a windscreen.
tomacana 10-29-2006, 04:02 PM Had to leave to Hornet parked today. Took the cruiser out (Shadow Spirit). The wife and I took out oer' the hills and hollars of east Tennessee. The colors have browned up but it has been a beauriful autumn.
Dan, Have you ever dropped down off the Blue Ridge Parkway to Hot Springs, North Carolina? I was near that area, even though I stayed in Tenn.
That area of Cocke and Green county has some sweet country rodes. If you can plan a ride this way I can meet you and escort you to the state line or something alone that line.
My consolations to rnd.

Hey, Tom, thanks for the invitation! I haven't taken the Parkway that far yet, but I'd surely like to. As November creeps up on us, I'm afraid my riding is severely limited for a couple of months -- I'm just not a cold-weather guy. But as spring comes along, I'd love to take opportunities to put a bunch more miles on, and I'll certainly keep you in mind. I've got a couple of VTX-riding friends in town who'd probably like such a trip as well.
Off to dig out my NC map.... :D
FireMan30 06-11-2007, 09:41 PM I'm in MD, Annapolis area. I could head down to VA easily.
