View Full Version : Do You Use Your Bike to Commute?

I do, somewhat. If I worked farther than 6.3 miles from home I would do it more. However, sometimes gearing up takes WAY longer than the ride. Though sometimes I take the bike to work knowing I'm going to take a long lunch (aka ride). :)

Also, I live in an apartment with crappy parking. I park the bike in a garage that's a few hundred yards away. When it's 90+ and dew points in the 70+ range, I say fuck it and take the cage. Yeah, I'm a wimp sometimes. :)

Every day. My commute to carpool is 26 miles one way. My work is 64 miles away. At least one day a week I have to ride in the whole way.

Besides the lack of wind protection, the 599 is the perfect tool for that. :)

p.s. Oh and the ctock seat sucks, for the 64 mile days.

Too much humanity on the roads in Chicago. I prefer less exposure than a rush hour commute provides. The 599 is strictly a toy.

actually, the only time i really get to ride is during my commute. i have two small children at home and my wife is a full time student. weekends are strictly for the family. i ride every weekday, rain or shine. fortunatly the weather in california is great for year round riding. sometimes i find myself wanting to go back to work just so i can get on the bike

I do as much as possible. The Hornet is a great commuter. I bought mine because it was an all rounder, among other things.

I now wisely check the weather. If there's no rain and it's not less than 45F then I'm out the door.

Yeah, I commute to work every day (about 30 miles roundtrip). Don't get to ride on weekends much. :(

I just picked up my 599 in August, so I fear my commuting season is nearly over. I'm not a cold-weather guy, so I may be storing my new toy for a while shortly. But between the day I picked it up and now, I've ridden to work as many days as I could. My commute is about 25-30 miles, round trip, so it's a good chance to get my head together in the mornings (no radio distractions) and to cool off on the way home. Plus, I can take the long way home and get a little extra riding time in. Already looking forward to spring!

No. I'm a school teacher and there's no place to hide it from curious or disgruntled students.

The only time I've used my truck since I got the bike almost five months ago was the move twice and to go to my workplace 5 hours from home. Not a lot compared to some of you, but ~2500 miles on the bike right now. As long as it isn't pouring outside, I'm on my bike unless I'm riding with someone else... job interviews, normal jobs, soon to be school, grocery store, visit friends, etc.

+1 on that. Only problem is my "commute" is a whopping 3 miles. I can take a "long lunch" (as mentioned above) and get some more miles in the day.

When I left this morning it was 31 degrees, which was nippy but fortunately I don't have to endure it very long to get to work, and then it gets warmer.

Some commuting, mostly fun / daytrips.
-Maybe a poll....
Something like, "How do you use your 599?".....

1- Commute :ride
2- Fun / day trips :D
3- Tour
4- hooliganism (is that a word?)
5- Posing 8)
6- Pick up chicks / men, (or both :? )
7- Crashing :(
8- All of the above

Occasionally thrash a few twisty bits. (That's the most I can find around here.) :devil

Pick up chicks? Even if it was THAT kind of bike it would only last till my helmet came off. :o

Crashing...only once so far.

Commute? I managed to get an apartment directly across the street from my office.

For most of the summer I drove the 599 everywhere. Put the first 2250 miles on her in 3 months. Not bad for no commuting.

Parking at a big school like Virginia Tech is not enjoyable... unless you have a motorcycle and the motorcycle parking is right next to your building :)

Plus, the center of campus is ruled by roving hordes of pedestrians who will not even *look* to see if a car is coming. Not a problem with the bike... either they hear me and move out of the way, or I can slowly slip through the big crowds. I definitely get a kick out of riding around the stranded cars.

That was one of the main reasons I got the bike... I got tired of walking 15-20 minutes from the bus stop to my class 3-4 times a day and admiring all of the bikes parked 30 feet from the door. LSU blocked the roads around the main parts of campus during class hours, but bikes get to drive around the blocks 8)

As for the poll, all of the above. Not so much picking up chicks, but they like it a hell of a lot more than I thought they would...

I commute on the bike every day, year 'round unless I have to use my car for some reason (usually weather). Don't get a lot of weekend riding what with 3 kids at home and working on my doctorate. Gotta plan that out pretty well ahead. But if it's not pouring, snowing or icy, I ride everywhere I can.

No picking up chicks for me, obviously. Not much on the hooliganism in general, though I do love hill-hopping. Lots of good places around here to catch some air! :D

I rode every day to work and on the weekends until about 2-3 weeks ago...When it gets down in the low 40's and 30's I cant take it..lol
Jawbreaker <-- WUSS. :crybaby

But i still ride during the days some..Not quite time to "Winterize" the Hornet yet.. :D

take my 599 to work every day year round. Only live 5 miles away from work, but parking the bike downtown is cheaper than the car by far and cheaper than a bus pass.

Before I started teaching in August, I worked at the local (4 miles from home) Wal-Mart. I bought my bike last February and I rode it to work everyday unless it looked like rain. That's what I miss about Wal-Mart. I even didn't mind when they made me go outside and push buggies because I could go admire my 599 and watch people walk by it and drool for cool.

I am with Super Sneaky Steve -
won't ride in the rain since I crashed my Harley
in the rain 3 years ago (cost me $3K to bring it
back to new looking).
As I get older, the minimum temperature to ride seems to
go up

45 degrees is my cut off, but I'd prefer 50.
Some may say they'd ride in colder weather, but
when your joints complain and you cannot type when
you arrive to work, that is a problem. I am a 911/Police/
Fire dispatcher, so I cannot tell folks to hold on while my
fingers defrost

I ride to work ever since i got the bike this august. 4to 5 miles each way. Its getting cold but im braving it..got new gears for the cold.

As long as there is no drop of rain and its not below 30 degrees... Im going for it. Having a better time than taking the subway to work. Great comfy bike in the traffic too. :bow

I'll take the morning cold as long as the riding home will be warmer, as long as it stays 50+ i the afternoons I can ride.

The mesh has been put away for warmer stuff. Still need better/warmer gloves.

My bike's the only vehicle I have as of right now. Ride 10 miles to and from work everyday. It's ok as long as I don't leave any skin exposed. Damn, I should really get a car before it starts snowing...

Wow, that sounds more like an "opportunity" to me...all things equal you got an extra 1 hour and 30 minutes in your day....now that it is light out so early, I'd be heading out the door to work at least an hour early...and probably still be late to work!

If only I could drag my lazy ass out of bed. Plus it's getting pretty cold in the mornings. Low-to-mid 30's is getting a little brisk for the rookie here. I don't really have the right gear to be out there in those temps, and it's not a lot of fun anymore if you aren't at least reasonably comfortable.

I use the 45 minutes it takes me to get to work waking up. I'd hate to be trying to "wake up" on a bike.

It was 43 this morning and super foggy but i decided to go as there is no rain scheduled for today and soon there will be no way im going into work on the bike.

It wasn't bad until i hit the highway then my visor started to get condensation on it and it would fog up. I flipped the visor up to clear the fog and the visor collected more condensation cause the fog was so dense.

So i had to stay on the highway with the visor up and the cold air in my face until i could pull over and wipe the visor off. When i goto the freeway there was no fog and life was good.

It's gonna be an interesting ride home...

2.5 miles each day, soon to get much less, maybe a mile max... hardly time to warm the inside of the gloves , let alone the engine. :)

As much as I love commuting on my bike, I miss the commute I had when I lived in Baltimore. The picture is taken from my window, the gray building at the bottom right is where I worked. A whopping block and a half! :: sigh ::
