View Full Version : Went for a short ride today at lunch (10.30.2006)
Didn't get to ride this past weekend so I figured I'll take advantage of the nice weather and go for a short ride at lunch.
The bike felt "odd", and rather low. I pulled over and checked my tires... the rear tire checked in at 36.5 psi ... a few psi lower than I'm used to. I wondered if this was causing the "wierdness" in the ride. I didn't know and didn't want to dwell on it. I looked at the tires some more, mounted the bike and continued on my way.
I pull up to a left turn light, it turns green, I release the clutch, twist the trottle and stall the hell out!!! :? I start the bike and it stalls again. At this point I realize that I'm not in first gear and try to shift down to the first but the damn thing isn't clicking down! I notice a car behind me... oops... I squeeze the clutch and pull the bike around the median, and pull over to the curb. After fidgeting around with the shifter I finally get the bike back into first and continue on my marry way... stressed out.
Anyone else had this happen to them?
Oh.. it is a picture thread after all, here are a few pics I took. For some reason most came out looking like crap. These are the semi decent ones.

sometimes i'm shifting down and it stays in neutral and wont go into first... typically i rev the throttle just a little and keep my foot pushing down on the gear and let the clutch out a little and then it will click and engage... (it happens once in a while)

I was thinking just that!
You're too good at this Alex

She has a sequential gear box and likes to hit every gear on the way down. If you try shifting several gears at one shot with no clutch between it gets a bit wonky.
AND I hope you all realize you've already lost The Great Helmet Challange just as you all lost The Great Glove Challange. Alex is the man. Thumbs Up Are you avaliable for weddings and Bat Mitzvahs? Wink

I know what you're talking about, but today's case was a bit different. All you have to do if you're "stuck in neutral" is release the clutch all the way, roll the bike back or forth a touch, then pull in the clutch and shift into first.
When you've stopped in third or fourth gear, shifting down to first is somewhat problematic... at least that's what happened today. :?

Actually, I'm trying to get into Wedding photography these days. Here's one from my childhood friend's wedding (w/ some photoshop work):

rndthought 10-31-2006, 07:35 AM Alex, I'm actually thinking about asking Steve to marry me just so you can take a picture of us riding two up off into the sunset...
Quit your job and open a studio. :thumbsup
Super Sneaky Steve 10-31-2006, 08:17 AM If you're stuck in a high gear at a stop, give it some gas and start slipping the clutch untill you move a few inches. You'll hear a click. Then you can shift down some more.
Ok rndthought (what the hell does that SN mean anyway?) I'll marry you, but you have to ride on the back!

J-nuine 10-31-2006, 10:33 AM Getting off subject... is that a "digital" SLR???
You'll find a "full" answer here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_SLR
Roughly, a Digital SLR is a camera that allows you to swich lenses... add the "digital" part (ie. uses memory sticks instead of film).
Here's what I have:

damnage 10-31-2006, 11:17 AM Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflexive) mean not cheap. :) Nice cameras though!
I just bought me a Canon S2 IS. Upper mid range digital camera.
I've owned SLR stuff before, it's just been a lot of years. Some Minolta stuff, but my favorite body was the Nikon F3. Wasn't cheap either, but great shots!

Woooh-up there big guy, said I was just thinking about it, let's not go picking out china patterns just yet  Besides, it's always better when you play hard to get.
As for the SM, have no idea, was probably drunk at the time
Alex, how fast is the glass you use?
I'm not sure how "fast" they are, but I have 3 lenses. The piece of crap that came with the camera (18-55mm), a Canon 50mm macro lens, and a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS.

F3.5, that's slow for a 28  Just wondering cause all your shots are high light level shots... but with still life it isn't all that important I guess. You have a good eye bro. You'd be scary if you dropped 5+ notes on some decent glass. Did some helmet test shots yesterday with my dinky Elph450 and they all look blah. I wish it had manual F-stop so I could blow out the background on some shots.

Yeah, I'd love to get a decent camera (30D would do) and a really nice lens or two... but I have a wedding coming up in about 6 months so I can't afford **** these days. I really want a 14mm but even a low-end one is in the neighborhood of 700 bucks!
vthoky 11-01-2006, 06:11 PM ... I release the clutch, twist the trottle and stall the hell out!!! :?
Ack! I did it too! I had to make a daytrip for work and got back home a bit early. Nobody else home... perfect weather... an hour to kill... gotta grab a helmet and jacket. So I headed out across town playing the right-left game and ended up over in Ellett Valley. (Anybody heard of Virginia Tech's Smart Road project? The big bridge is over there. Yes, I forgot to take the camera with me. Anyway....) So after cruising the Valley for a bit, being thankful there was so little other traffic, I noticed the clock (which I've not yet set back to EST) and figured it was time to head home.
Found a nice neighborhood to cruise as a method of turning around, and headed out. On the way I missed a turn and ended up at a local tree nursery. Their entrance looked like a good turnaround spot, so I signaled and pulled in. The entrance is all gravel, so I was taking my time and being super careful. And I stalled it, bigger'n Texas Pete. No problems, right? Except then I see two guys in one of the nursery's trucks waiting for me to get outta the way. (Couldn't tell whether they were laughing.) Oooh, now it's gone from "oops" to "embarrassing." Start over, gingerly putt across the gravel, and head out... feeling the face turn red. Good thing for the face shield, I suppose.
Aside from that, it was a great ride on a perfect-weather day. It's nice to be able to say I rode on Halloween. I wish I had ridden today, so I could say I got to ride in November!
Take the camera with you next time.

Bad Karma or something. I left the house with the camera and by the time I got an hour away from home, my wife called asking where it was -- she needed it for work. Argh. So I got back home after work, dropped off all the "non-essentials" and happened to leave the camera on the counter. Argh!
Hopefully that's my only bonehead maneuver for the rest of the week.... :?
