View Full Version : what is it and did i bolt it on wrong?
J-nuine 11-02-2006, 02:46 PM I posted this on the nest and had a few comments about that round cylinder in front of the tire- right under the swing arm and i started to look at other UK hornet pics and they don't have it on there???? they were confused to what it was.... is it something specific to the US 04 599.....?? i'm looking at some pics but the 06 doesn't have it either it seems... it's the hose thingy that water comes out of right? or did i by accident bolt it on wrong?
anybody anybody?

I'm pretty sure it's something exclusive to California bikes. Something about emission control. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.
May I add that the exhaust looks NICE! Now I want one. :D

Maybe an activated charcoal deal to catch fumes from the crank case/tank and feed back to the intake...if it is, it will have some vacuum hoses running up to the air box and carbs and possibly the breather for the gas tank. IF this is the case, rip all that stuff off and plug the vacuum lines....unless you gotta pass inspection, then maybe make it easy to put back on or just leave it. But must say it is a tad distracting…
:crazy
Oh, and just noticed I have the same frame sliders (different color though)! I think they will be useless but they look good!
dabinche 11-02-2006, 04:03 PM that thing is a charcoal canister and only for the CA model
J-nuine 11-02-2006, 04:10 PM if i remove it will it enhance performance?
rndthought 11-02-2006, 04:16 PM Anything that makes you look better enhances performance, like $400 rear sets :thumbsup
(but no it won't, and neither will removing the canister)
J-nuine 11-02-2006, 04:53 PM i read some where that the rearsets is shaped more aero-dynamic and is less weight hence makes bike go faster no? it was in last month cycle mag....
i appreciate your sarcasm rnd :P
but next stop rearsets...
rndthought 11-02-2006, 07:05 PM but next stop rearsets...
Yeah, if I had an extra 4 bills laying around I'd be all over them too.
Super Sneaky Steve 11-02-2006, 08:20 PM I've never seen or dealt with one of those weird things, but it seems that the crank case vapors vent through there instead strait to the atomosphere.
In that case removal won't do anything but reduce some weight.
If I were you I'd pull it but keep it handy if you need to go through inspections.
J-nuine 11-03-2006, 01:24 PM i looked at it last night.. and it's a cylinder that goes back up to the engine and then back so i can't just rip it off hmmm
pricelister 11-05-2006, 07:56 PM That California-only canister is for fuel vapors. It stores the excess to prevent venting to the atmosphere. It won't affect performance. If the proper emissions equipment has to be in place to register your bike in CA, you won't pass. Check with your dealer to make sure it won't be a problem.
cesu pro 11-05-2006, 11:20 PM yea, i had one of those on my bike too,.... just rip it off.... it'll save weight so it may increase performance a little?
but more importantly it's ugly, so take it off.
J-nuine 11-06-2006, 11:28 AM what about the hoses? it looks like it goes back to the engine?
rndthought 11-06-2006, 12:30 PM They should all be vacuum hoses (see my first post)...just got to find where they go and plug 'em up, or maybe one is re-routed... If you download the service manual, you should be able to see how things are hooked up without the extra hardware.

I think it's a California emission control thing. I wonder if it robs power?

Other than adding a few ounces to the bike...no.
sseche 06-13-2007, 05:43 PM I believe that is the Catalytic Converter and put there by law to help make California a little less smoggy. I hear tell that it may effect performance but its very visible and therfore visible to the CHP when missing. Leave it alone, we'll all breath a little better.

Nope. A cat would be as close to the engine side of the exhaust as possible. The heat makes it more efficient.
I believe pricelister is bang on: it's a charcoal canister.
Flipper 06-19-2007, 03:40 PM I have a California 599 and mine has that canister too.
You can see it under my foot.
I always wondered what that was.
The next time I stop by the Honda dealer, I'll ask my service guy.

It's definitely a charcoal canister. It doesn't hurt performance, and as RND said, weighs very little. If its removed, you may affect carb jetting, though. The Cali spec bikes have different carb specs than the 49-state bikes, partially due to the fact that cali bikes ingest fuel vapors from the canister.
