PBR isn't a beer...it's a water substitute...and a poor one at that. ...but i can't say i haven't had my share of 'em as a poor college student not too long ago. :?
But as long as we're posting beers...
Killians
Yeungling
Duck Rabbit porter
(and Stella on tap if you happen to travel to the UK)
Guess i tend to go for the more 'medium' beers. (Except that porter...liquid bread. Mmm.)
vthoky 11-10-2006, 03:35 AM Mmmm. Beeeeeerrr. :drool
How 'bout some props for Guinness? Corona is the standard in my fridge, there's Guinness Stout (and sometimes Draft, with the Widget in the bottle) on occasion, and I 'm required to keep a couple of Coors Light on hand for when Dad comes over.
Newcastle is always welcome, and Dos Equis is an occasional visitor.
Now when my friends in Germany are feeling gracious, they send me a little Dom Kolsch. Great stuff!
Super Sneaky Steve 11-10-2006, 05:55 AM You just learned to shave and how you're drinking?
I'm telling on you! :P
antihero 11-10-2006, 07:09 AM Who needs a list? A true drunk such as myself just drinks whatever is cheapest on tap.
rndthought 11-10-2006, 10:16 AM Ohhhhh FUN! Something to talk about OTHER than motorcycles/cars, upgrades, Tire pressure/Oil type and Chris’s wife! (oh you know I love you guys :clap )
Jmd:
PBR - Sorry you are wrong (IMHO). One of the best! However it, like Mickey's, must be DRUNK when very cold. Optimal is 30-32°F so that when the can is opened, the resulting pressure drop allows ice crystals to form. Best enjoyed when very hot and thirsty or after lugging a six pack (which was unknowingly stashed in MY pack) up a 4,000’ mountain pass.
Killians...Ok, everyone has their odd ball. If I go Irish red direction, I want a real Celtic: Smithwicks. Bit-o-trivia, What is the #1 beer in of Ireland? Yes that is correct, BUD! No kidding
Yuengling...A perennial favorite and truly patriotic brew but find its alcohol content a bit too high for sustained enjoyment. It is a 2 pint limit beer. :nerd
Duck Rabbit Porter....Ummmm, me wanna try!!!! Nothing like liquid bread! And who doesn't like chocolate undertones? The "Milk Stout" sounds interesting also, when I make it up to NC, maybe you can introduce us? :thumbsup Now the "duck" part, is that the animal or as in the verb command form?
Stella...Nice! Almost forgot her..props for that but no need to travel, on tap all over here. But NO FRUIT. I hate FRUIT with my beer. I'm fruity enough, thank you  Although I imagine just like Guinness/Harp it is either brewed in Mexico or if truly imported, doesn't retain 100% of it's splendor :( ) and is at its best when drank at the source.
Vthoky:
Guinness...Obligatory. But only draft never the fizzy can. Think I'd rather have a Murph's all the same though. More 2 pint limit beers.
Coors Lite...The Silver Bullet is my favorite "Lite" beer. Did Mr. Coors ever beat that DUI charge? Man that has to suck...Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Corona...even Mexicans don't drink that...`cause it's recycled Dos Equis as bio-processed by Mexican residents in TJ and reclaimed via Urinals. Or maybe I just don't like it cause I don't like fruit in my beer. :D
Dos Equis...YES. A good Mexican beer (#1 being Tecate). I prefer the XX Dark but either one and a burrito (the most perfect food ever) are a winning combination. :drool
Newcastle... :idonno Never understood what all the hub-bub was about. It is alright but not in my rotation.
Dom Kolsch...Have seen that at a specialty place, may actually half to try it now!
Steve, wasn’t drinking yet in that picture but keep an eye out…it didn’t take too long afterward…
Antihero, I'm a discerning Drunkard. :naughty Quality not quantity when it comes to beer (find it so filling plus would hate to lay waste to all that time spent running). When I'm serious or in a hurry it's Gin, Vodka (potato) or Jager/Car Bombs when getten’ silly. When going for slow and low, it's Whisky/Bourbon.
damnage 11-10-2006, 11:08 AM Beer is merely the slut I ride to get drunk. Nothing more, nothing less. :D
stringburner 11-10-2006, 03:52 PM I prefer all 5 of these on tap, if it's fresh. Bottles are ok, but fresh draught beer rules. Sometimes it's so fresh and crispy and tasty I gotta swish it around my mouth, but the ole' woman hates it when I do that. Yuengling, Amber Bock, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen, Stella Artois. Beer isn't merely a vehicle to become intoxicated, each ingredient is to be savored. Beer is proof God wants us to be happy~Benjamin Franklin.
damnage 11-10-2006, 03:58 PM I love how you guys actually understand that it's weißen bier (it's a tz sound). NOT weiss beer. :thumbsup :clap
I was stationed in West Berlin for two years (1983-1985) and learned a bit about beer while there. Anyways, weiss beer is flavored stuff that the kiddies drink. It's clear and they add raspberry or lime flavoring to it. It is a malt beverage, but you'd probably have to drink 10 gallons to bet a buzz!
When I came back to America these beers were starting to catch on in the US but it irked me that the name was different here. Not just different, we called it by the name of the beer for kids.
Just an odd thought on beer is all.
edit to add: this is kind of along the same lines as scotch whiskey versus whisky. Those enjoy scotch know what I mean. 8)

Heh. Okay then.
I usually drop a $100 or so on a good fifth of something every New Years. I just sit at home and enjoy it all by my lonesome and that's just fine by me...until I wake up the next morning and realize that I drank half the fifth, but only really remember drinking a quarter of it, or only remember drinking about $25-$40 dollars worth of the $50-$80 that I drank!
stringburner 11-10-2006, 04:25 PM I had an experience w/ cheap Scotch when I was in the eighth grade. Of course I didn't know better, so I sat by the campfire and drank a whole fifth. I tried to get up and fell face first, then crawled off to puke awhile, passed out, puked in my sleep, etc. Wadn't right pleasant. I won't be drinking any more Scotch in this lifetime. I'll stick w/ beer.

Myself and two friends had a similar experience with a 1.75l of cheap gin when I was in 10th grade. Can't stand the shit to this day! I feel 'ya on that one. :D
rndthought 11-10-2006, 04:41 PM So you drank a tenth but only remember a twentieth of the original fifth? And you got another tenth of the original fifth with which to forget another twentieth all over again. Plus it only costs a Benjamin to pony up to the table...Humm...sounds like my kind of game! :thumbsup
Damn-Age: So name names. Where do I start? Take it neat, add a bit of soda or water, on the rocks? How do I look cool doing this in public? Teach me, teach me!

 Well, I've been drinking scotch before it got popular (circa 1980). The single malts really became the rage beginning in the early 90s, though I'd learned to appreciate them long before that. All because I had an older friend who taught me a bit about them. Dumbluck I guess.
So, yes, I prefer the single malts to the blends.
I dunno, start out with Glenlivit or Glenfiddich for a single malt. Everyone knows what they are and you can surely find a place that serves them so you don't have to drop $30+ on a fifth and decide you hate it. These are both 12 year old whiskys.
Glenfiddich, to me, has a much smokier flavor, and a bit more of a bite to it. Glenlivit has a much maltier flavor, is a little smoother (to me).
Other stuff to try, if you decide you like it, is knockando. Again, it won't set you way, way back for a good scotch, but it's a totally different animal from Glenlivit and Glenfiddich. It has a much sharper intial taste, but a beautiful smooth finish.
Personally I'd say start with Glenlivit. To this day I love their 21 year old stuff! It's smoooooooth and amazing, but just start with their 12 year old. The 21 year old will set you back a c-note plus. Try it straight, but I prefer it with some water and a couple of ice cubes. Not much water, probably 1 part water to two parts scotch. The water seems to make it much more aromatic and it seems to reveal much more flavor.
If I find you've mixed these beautiful whiskys with anything but ice, water or more whisky you will be exocommunicated. :D
Oh, and I never considered the "looking cool" part while doing it. Just something I acquired a taste for early on.
rndthought 11-10-2006, 05:21 PM Well as luck would have it, I'm off to Raglan Road Irish Pub tonight. SO 12 yr old Glenlivit it will be my first order! Splash of water from a bottle with a couple of cubes :thumbsup
Will let ya know how it goes...

Heh. Sometimes you have to be careful with the Irish Pubs and what you order. Depends if they're protestant or catholic. I can't recall what's a no-no for either, I just remember ordering the "wrong" beer/whisky in one once and getting some pretty mean looks. Like how would I know! I'm an American! :) And, yes, this was an irish pub in America.
tomacana 11-10-2006, 06:36 PM Beer seems to hit a new high. No pun intended. Good info on brands. We have the Smoky Mountain Brewery here that makes the imbiding a treat.
Rnd You shed some good light on brands, especially Yuengling. It's unavailable in Tennessee. Bring on to the mountains of Tennessee and make time to hit the pubs.
I have taken a liking to Modello Especial. Just cracked one open. Good beer after a very good ride thru the twisties.
vthoky 11-10-2006, 08:26 PM Guinness...Obligatory. But only draft never the fizzy can. Think I'd rather have a Murph's all the same though. More 2 pint limit beers.
Dom Kolsch...Have seen that at a specialty place, may actually half to try it now!
I hadn't tried the fizzy can thing until recently. One of my wife's friends bought me a pack of it (in bottles rather than the can, but the Widget concept is the same), and I thought it was pretty good. I prefer the draft for sure.
You've found Dom Kolsch here in the States?! Ohboyohboyohboy! Can ya tell me where? I can't find a distributor here in Virginia who can get it for me.
Idunno whether Mr Coors beat that arrest... haven't heard much more about it since the incident.
damnage 11-11-2006, 09:09 AM BTW, if anyone knows what Bell's Oberon is and likes you it better buy up all you can now as it looks like it's about to be an ex-beer. :(
Correction/update: appears to only affect you if you're in Illinois. Dispute with a distributor there.

Ok, so started out with the `Livit. Nice. :thumbsup Reminded my of my childhood. Hadn’t really thought of it but Mom used to drink Scotch and Soda. Amazing what aromas can do with the memory. SOOOO. Nice. Ordered it over ice with a splash of water. Enjoyed it much, thank you. Ran into a girl there drinking Glenfiddich...said it was a bit too smokey for my tastes (OMG - sorry bro, but all's fair  //owe ya one//) After that was finished I probably did a knob move...went for the Johnnie Walker Red made up the same way. Wow, big difference, very oak-y (and honestly, didn't enjoy it nearly as much). I really don’t understand the single/blended thing...Kick myself in that I should have gone for the Glenlivit 21 or the Glenfiddich for comparative contrast but for some reason the Red was calling... sorry if I let ya down :( More study on tap for tonight  Thanks again!
damnage 11-12-2006, 10:26 AM rndthought,

Anyone else down for some Bass? :naughty

Oh I can shovel… The gig was up rather quick (never pays to play too long) but just that much more for her to remember. I mean other than me being an ass, I’m an honest ass :naughty
Wed we will be doing a comparative study between the `Livit and the `Fiddich 12's and 21's :thumbsup (damn, I hope I can manage 4 of these bombs in one evening and still talk coherently  )
Bass... always a tuff choice between a Bass and a Harp. Usually lean to the Irish but every now and then...

I'm not really a "bear person"... but I'm always up for some Sake and Sapporo! Freakin' Sake Bombs, they give you the best buzz ever!
:friday
rndthought 11-16-2006, 03:43 PM Oooooh Sake Bombs! Must try one! We used to do JegerBombs and Car Bombs but then I was like, wow, I ain't very young anymore... eeeeeehaaaaOooooAhhhhh the next morning. Red Bull should be a controlled liquid.
pricelister - Shiner Bock on tap down here... is there a specific reason Chicago/IL bans it?
DavidVTHokie 11-16-2006, 04:29 PM I gotta believe that all you folks gotta have better stuff than you listed brewed local to you.
I guess I just must be lucky 8) cause I have Carolina Brewing Company (http://www.carolinabrew.com/brews.html) just 10 minutes away that stocks the local stores with a great IPA. Their brown ale is good too, and then there are their seasonals.
http://www.carolinabrew.com/images/ales75.gif
If you're ever in the area, drop by the place on a Saturday. Tours and tastings where you can drink your fill.

Then, if you're ever in Chapel Hill, there is
Carolina Brewery (http://www.carolinabrewery.com/) restaurant where they have their own brews that are great.

I went to UNC for two years and yet somehow never found that place. Wonder how that happened... :idonno Yates was pretty decent, as was the Wooden Nickel in Hillsboro and, um, what was the name of that place in Rams Head Plaza with all the pool tables and stuff... Ah well. I'm too old to remember this kind of stuff.
But i'll have to check that place out next time i go home.

i had Belhaven's Best a couple months ago in Scotland and loved it !!
PBR is not good beer - it is just the trendy beer to say you like these days, i think it has something to do with the white trash/redneck culture becoming "cool" ... kinda like the mullet...
damnage 11-16-2006, 06:55 PM Are we talking about the drinking or the date....
Both...really. If you get all sloppy drunk quick you ain't gettin' none though. Think about it. :hump

Umm yeah about that... Some how I took the "Sloppy Drunk" fork in the road... :D :) :? :(
Oh wait I still had a good time, I don't care
rndthought 11-17-2006, 01:05 AM Oh and a general tip... if one wishes to do a comparative tasting, it may be wise to not actually consume an entire drink worth of each sample. After the 3rd or 4th you've really lost any sense of relative reference. This is evident when re-ordering previous samples to compare to current samples...
I'd suggest a swish and spit strategy. Albeit a seemingly terrible waste of spirits…what other option is there?
antihero 11-17-2006, 05:23 AM You can swish and spit with wine but not beer. Beer taste testers have to swallow at least once to get the true taste because the portion of the tongue that tastes beer is bear the back of the tongue.
pricelister 11-18-2006, 06:02 PM I had Belhaven's Best a couple months ago in Scotland and loved it !!
Yep. That's where I had it. 10 days in Edinburgh a couple of years ago and I was hooked. Pretty dirty town, but definitely alot of cool parts.

yeroC 04-16-2007, 03:13 PM Wow!! Somehow i missed this thread way back when. Some intersting
choices. I know what you mean about PBR extra cold, rnd. But i've had
the same epiphany about Billy Dee(colt 45). After a 12 hour day
working in the middle of july an ice cold colt 45 was handed to me and
it was actually good. I'm definitely not a malt liquor guy but the colt
was kickin' that day.
My list would have to be:
1. Guinness (extra stout, yeah the rot gut symbol of testicular fortitude)
2. Yuengling black and tan
3. Miller High Life--alot of people scoff @ the champagne of beers but
i genuinely like this beer.
4. Dos Equis 'verde' (that's green for you gringos)
5. Grolsch (anybody ever try this? it may surprise ya)
Honorable mention: Lowenbrau, Sam Adams Boston, Becks Dark,
Coors original, Brooklyn Brewery, Michelob.
Liquors in the arsenal:
Vodka--Grey Goose, Armadale, Blavod(black vodka)
Rum--Overproof Jamaican white rum  (a dab'll do ya)
Whiskey--Jameson(el cheapo), Johnnie Walker Blue label(very expensive,
probably $200 a bottle, paid $75 on island of St. Maarten. Best
whiskey i've had)
Cognac--Hennesey(what can i say, it's the brotherman's elixir 8) )
rndthought 04-16-2007, 04:40 PM yeroC - High Life, you'll get no argument from me!
Damnage turned me onto Scotch in particular...yum... JW Blue...it's a blend not necessarily bad (obviously!) but I've never tried... I cringe at anything $35+ a bottle!
goWVU 04-16-2007, 07:19 PM I can't believe nobody mentioned the King of Beers, Budweiser :friday . It's not near as exotic as some of the aforementioned, but it always worked for me. It's hard to beat a Yuengling. Damn, I hope wherever I move next, they sell it.
TwigMonster 04-16-2007, 08:17 PM My favorite beer is from right here in little ole Ft. Collins CO:
Fat Tire Amber Ale from New Belgium Brewing!
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3254/logonewbelgiumev0.gif
I like Corona and Sam Adams. I also like Amstel Lite (definitely my favorite lite beer... bud lite? Miller lite? Yuck). Other than that, I'm open to just about any amber, wheat type of ale. Not into the dark, thick stout stuff.
ScottUK 04-17-2007, 03:35 PM scotch whiskey versus whisky

Slide 04-17-2007, 04:48 PM Love that New Belgium logo!

Ok, should start a new thread for this and maybe I will...soon...but just so no one is offended take note:
Scotch Whisky - !! NOTE NO "E" !! Brilliantly crafted in many "flavors" by the Scotts... God bless every One of them!
Canadian Whisky - !! NOTE NO "E" !! Made in Canada...using any grain they feel like! (but mostly Rye)
Irish Whiskey - Made in Ireland and doesn't (hardly ever) use peat in the production process.
Bourbon Whiskey - US made beverage, 51% corn and aged at least 2 years - can contain no additives, such as coloring or additional flavoring, and must undergo no additional processing. Mostly produced in Kentucky
Tennessee Whiskey - Charcoal Filtered Bourbon (smooooth - Knob Creek :thumbsup)
There are more but these are the Big 5.
Slide 04-19-2007, 07:26 AM You're right... maybe a new thread!

That Belgian cherry Beer...
:P
Sundog 07-23-2007, 08:43 PM The Alaska Brewing Company makes a smoked porter that pretty much tops any other beer I've tasted. And I've tasted a lot of beers. I took a class in beer brewing, where they fed us all sorts of strange brews. Fact: the University of Alaska Fairbanks will give you 1/2 of a credit for learning to brew beer for a semester.
Since I've been down here going to grad school at VTech, I've found a beer called Unibroue. It's from a French-Canadian brewery. They have all sorts of beers, from the fruity to the dark porters. I'm especially fond of one called "La Fin du Monde" or something, it's dark and high in alcohol. 8)
FYI Hokies: you can only find it at the Cellar.
Oh, and just so I don't come off as to much of a beer snob, I've come to appreciate Yuengling since I got down here. And MGD isn't bad for when you just want a beer, no frills.
pricelister 07-23-2007, 09:19 PM The stuff I made last month.
Is that like my chili? "That last batch was awesome. If only I could remember how I did it?"
rndthought 07-23-2007, 10:45 PM If I'm drinking beer, seldom, it's Dogfish Head Indian Brown or Chicory.
My "every day" fav is still Glenmorangie...
I've a bit of a taste for Macallen, the young ones...don't have the pockets for the 15+... :(
Mom's beau has a Lagavulin he "forced" me to try but the Isly's are a bit much for my tastes... Still have a bottle of "The Frog", one of my first, that is still half full...
jfeagin 07-25-2007, 02:00 PM The good stuff...
Whiskey (from the Gaelic "uisge beatha"):
- Glenlivet; the older, the better
- Bushmill's Black Label
- Superstition (from Jura, it's my new fave)
- Talisker
- most any of the old line American bourbons, well aged, of course!
Beer (So much more than just a breakfast drink):
- Lindemann's lambics (especially the gueuze)
- Chimay (or just about any Trappist brew)
- Harp
- local brewers and brewpubs around here are good
- my own creations; and yes, I can repeat them all
As the monks say, "In heaven there is no beer. That's why we drink it here." 8)
tony23 07-25-2007, 03:36 PM I can't believe nobody mentioned the King of Beers, Budweiser :friday
I think that's because we're discussing beer, not colored water :)

I've done that before - but I usually keep pretty good records.
Blew it on my last batch of mead, though - didn't record the initial gravity reading, so I have no idea at all how strong it is.
Guess I'll have to figure it out by drinking some...
yeroC 09-21-2007, 06:35 AM Currently slowly working my way thru a bottle of Speyburn 10yr.
Not the smoothest but it's OK. Pretty high buzz factor too.
rndthought 09-21-2007, 07:51 AM Well, not many singles claim to be smooth. Interesting...currently working on something kinda the same flavor...
Macallan 12 year (it's a bit rich for me)
I still like me whisky with just a few cubes...like to watch 'em melt and mingle, sippin’ takes me about a hour to suck down a double. :friday
And man, you really gotta watch that glass down near the end when out at a retail establishment, the number of times I was denied the pleasure of the last 1/4 of my drink...If they don't see ice in it they just assume it's been abandoned. Talk to someone, turn back around, reach and  CALL THE COPS!
yeroC 09-21-2007, 01:11 PM Yeah how true about the abduction of the last swallow!!
I'll do quick shots of a blend, like CrownRoyal or J&B.(nice slow burn
going down). But Speyburn and other singles, i slow sip 'em on the rocks.
That's all i need is a double shot and a Guinness for the night. Anything
more would be uncivilized.('bout shitfaced)
G00se 09-21-2007, 03:37 PM Figured I should represent the Pacific Northwest breweries.
After all we Portland has more breweries and brewpubs per capita than any other city in the United States.
I copied and pasted some of the descriptions from some of their websites as I am not good at describing what good beer tastes like.
1. Rouge Brewery - Dead Guy Ale - Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with rogue’s proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
2. Roots Organic Brewery - Island Red - RED stout. Very full bodied complex ale brewed with a good amount of oats which help Give this RED a very rich & creamy head.
3. BridgePort Brewery - India Pale Ale - Really good IPA but I really like it from their pub from a cask style Keg. Its kinda like a less carbonated beer I know it sounds gross but its really good.
4. Pelican Brewery - Tsunami Stout - Good Stout 7% ABV
5. Laurelwood - Free Range Red - A rich copper-colored ale with loads of fresh hop flavor. Medium in body the caramel sweetness blends wonderfully with the smooth hop flavor creating a balanced, super drinkable beer. This beer is brewed with 100% Organically-grown malts.
I'm not a beer snob by any means I'll still drink PBR and even Miller High-life. But when I want a good beer ill drinking one of the above.
Cheers!

If you're drinking PBR or HiLi...you ARE drininkg good beer. :point
yeroC 09-22-2007, 09:14 AM I'm definitely not mad at the High Life. I don't get why alot of people
frown at it. An ice cold HiLi beats alot of the others that people go for IMO.
I'll get a case and me, you and rnd can kill it 8)
Those brews sound good Goose. I'll have to see if i can track any of 'em
down. I love stouts and dark beers and reds.
