View Full Version : Dang it...Can't pass inspection...undertray...help!
MotoGPFan26 11-10-2006, 07:26 PM Ok. Stringburner changed the undertray when he bought the bike, which I now own. I love the "fender eliminator" that's on it. Problem is there is no light for the license plate. I can't pass inspection till my license plate is lit.
Other than putting the original fender/tray back on to pass inspection, is there an alternative? Is there something that I can mount or something to light up my license plate? I'd like a permanent solution if it's possible.
If I haven't been clear about this post, let me know. I'm probably not explaining myself very well.
I know there are LED strips made especially for license plate lighting purposes that you can buy for cheap and wire into your rear harness...but i haven't looked into it myself, so can't really be of much help. But someone who's done a undertail conversion should be able to shed more light on the subject...

Lots of stuff to browse through here. If I were you, I'd put the original set up back on if you have it to pass the inspection then go shopping for something else.
You'll have to wait a few days for it to get shipped then you have to wire it all in. Most items will not be a plug and play. You'll need to cut off the connector to your original light and solder it onto the new unit like I showed in some of my videos for lights.
mechanic77 11-10-2006, 10:10 PM You can VERY VERY easily get a light mounted there somehow Im sure of it 8)
DarkTint 11-10-2006, 10:38 PM Easy solution: Take it to another shop to get inspected.
I removed my light and it passed inspection without a problem.
antihero 11-11-2006, 03:38 PM Well I'm about 80% complete with the new undertray and I bought a pair of these:
http://www.1tail.com/sa/p/Lite_N_Boltz_domed_head_license_plate_light_-_Satin_Finish_(pair).htm (you have to cut 'n paste because phpbb won't do the url write since it have parentheses in it)
for the license plate light. I'm actually taking a break to check my email and then I'm going to mount them to see how well they work.
J-nuine 11-11-2006, 05:09 PM if it's a ermax undertray there should be a little hole at the top to put a led light.. i was looking for stringburner's pic of his bike can't find it.... but im sure you can put a led through there if not.... they sell small little lights that look like
http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=2&L2=53&L3=193&L4=&item=DEN_30301_G
that you feed through the licesne plate wholes. check them out.

It's a Pyramid Plastics undertray. I ended up getting the little lights like you posted that double as licnse plate mounting bolts.
rndthought 11-11-2006, 08:13 PM :thumbsup Where there is a will, there is a way. Was gonna suggest double side sticky tape and a glow stick.
stringburner 11-11-2006, 08:38 PM That's exactly why I gave you a new factory wiring harness and the factory tray. Pop it back on, inspect, put the goodies back on. I was gonna find an unobtrusive license plate light to put on it, but I never got to it. I remember seeing one I wanted somewhere (small, and purpose built), but I cant remember where it was now.
mechanic77 11-12-2006, 05:08 AM Man Im glad I can write my own inspection stickers 8)

Can't you still get pulled over for not having a light on the plate...would think you'd wanna get that sorted anyway just for that plus more light on the bike at night can never hurt...no?
mechanic77 11-12-2006, 09:44 AM yep get something on there definitely needs to be lit up those lights u ordered are pretty kewl dude

Sure you could get a ticket for not having a license plate light. I never did much riding at night. Way yonder too many deer in this area to take a chance doing much night riding. I've already been down that road. If you live in the city, yeah, it would be worth doing. Like I said, I was going to put an led light on it for the plate, I just never got around to doing it. There's lots of options, but finding something that looks right is a different story.
damnage 11-12-2006, 03:55 PM I just don't understand the stupid license plate light deal. All license plates are HIGHLY reflective these days. Any kind of light hits them and they light up like crazy.
It's stupid but we have to do it. I once got a "five-day" for the license plate bulb on my car. Meaning five days to fix it and go back to the police station to get it inspected to make sure I'd done the repair. Total PITA! But it was a $2 bulb vs. ~$35.00 ticket, so of course I did it. :)
