View Full Version : engine swap?
thejoe138 11-16-2006, 06:50 PM am i the only one who has considered possible engine swaps for the 599?
i have seen some engines on ebay fairly cheap...
600rr ?
929rr?
1000rr?
just a thought...
Honda did that already. It's called the 919.
(Don't listen to me...i'm biased. )
MotoGPFan26 11-16-2006, 07:17 PM if you want a 600rr...go buy one. Want a liter bike...go buy one. Want a 929...go buy one.
Don't destroy the hornet. They are perfect just like they are.
maybe I'm still way to much of a newb...but I just can't imagine the Horner needing anything it doesn't come stock with...unless your a die hard racer that spends 5 days a week at the track. If this is the case...I imagine you would have a track bike already...
Don't take what I said personally...it's just that the 599 is such a special bike just like it is...why would you want to change it to anything else...
antihero 11-16-2006, 07:29 PM He may be looking for an engine swap because on another thread he said that he's got close to 20k miles on his current engine. Since he loves the 599 so much, he doesn't want to get rid of the style but needs a new heart.
twm1010 11-16-2006, 07:37 PM lmao 20,000 miles? shit... i put 12k a year on mine...
There are guys on the hornet's nest with over 100k on theirs

+1...what he said
thejoe138 11-16-2006, 08:34 PM antihero - over 23K, now after last weeks 3400... i think its running better now that it did when it was new.
the engine swap, like i said, was just a thought...
MotoGPFan26 - if a wanted a 600rr i would have one, but the thought of a 1000rr motor on my bike is interesting at least. i don't consider an engine change destroying my bike any more than anyone else swaping exhaust system, bolting on plastic fairings, or changing tire sizes. as long as no permanent changed were made to the frame it's just another mod that could be changed back
the bike could still be registered and insured as a 600cc standard
i should have been a bit more clear. i was interested if anyone eles had looked into the fittment of different powerplants. not opinions, or if they would like it if i did it... after all i never said anyone was "destroying" their bike by installing a windscreen, just because i don't like it .
i also have a 1966 ducati 250 (basket case project) which would get the 599s motor.

Uuummm...I think comparing a 1000rr motor swap to an exhaust swap or plastic fairings is like comparing apples to ....say...lightbulbs.
Hey man...your bike. Do what suits you...
DarkTint 11-16-2006, 11:15 PM I'm still waiting for someone here to attempt a swap with the single sided swingarm from the VFR.
dabinche 11-16-2006, 11:39 PM dude this is the internet everyone has an opinion...want my opinion on motor oil?!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Not in this thread
Single side swing arm, FireBlade engine swap all been done. But really, if you do those things you'd also want to swap out the front shocks (rear shock had to change with the new swing arm), upgrade the brakes and rotors, get lighter wheels, real rear sets... at which point you either have a lot of time on your hands or would have probably been better off getting a different bike. IMHO.
Now for oil, obviously Extra Virgin Olive oil is the only acceptable best answer... :D  :D

Super Sneaky Steve 11-17-2006, 05:18 AM If you go with an F3 RR lump you can make it work, but the air boxes are different sizes so you'll have to play around with that.
23K miles is nothing for a honda motorcycle. If you take care of it, it will perform well beyond 100K. Are you experiancing any problems?
The larger motors most likely won't fit the frame. Even if they did it would be way too much power for that single backbone type of frame.
If I were you, I'd keep your 600 as is. If you need more power get the 919 or any of the other fine naked bike.
tyler d 11-17-2006, 05:29 AM The whole streetfighter look came out of guys taking crashed sports bikes (who were written off due to damaged plastics...hence the naked look)and adding renthals, changed gearing, different engines etc. This proved to be a cheap way of getting a cool bike...but very rarely did the finished article ride or handle as good as the original...they did have attitude though.
Each to their own, and bikes are all about being individual...but I like subtle tweaks that get noticed by those in the know...braided hoses, different bars...if it has a purpose then its alright in my book, especially if it looks cool into the bargain. Most of the US mods fit in with this perfectly...I like your style
What I don't like (and I don't mean to offend) is too much colour coding (you should know when to stop), bling for the sake of it e.g rad guards...why draw attention to a radiator!, and unfinished projects...like almost every true street fighter I have seen being ridden :P Just my opinion...but the manufacturers spend a lot of time developing these machines and there is only so much you can do to make it better...without turning it into a tarts handbag!
