How about RHPS? TOAST!
tyler d 12-01-2006, 02:46 PM Rocky Horror!!! A guilty pleasure if ever I heard one!
ps. I was a big fan back in the day
Ooh Ooh Ooh... a music discussion!
All time favorite bands: Wolfsheim, The Cure, Tool, Candlebox, Depeche Mode, VNV Nation, Gotan Project
Best Gig: Rammstein! Their show was amazing! Marylin Manson put on a great show, and so did Metallica.
Guilty pleasure: Hm.. that's tough... I don't think I'm embarrassed of anything I listen to... but in general, Billy Joel has always been a one-off type singer in my collection. I love his stuff.
cesu pro 12-01-2006, 06:13 PM favs: tool (like a surprisingly large amount here), deftones, iron and wine (really getting into them more and more), radiohead (no one's said this yet?), nirvana (cliche, yes.... but damn good still, love em), many many others
best gig: either deftones at house of blues anaheim (white pony tour), or glassjaw at glasshouse (never put that toghether there....) in pomona (pre "worship & tribute"
guilty pleasures:... a lot, i listen to so much stuff that a lot of could be considered "gay"... one of the worst may be jewel... but her old stuff was good man.... admit it... (most definitely not her "intuition" phase)
MotoGPFan26 12-01-2006, 07:25 PM WOOOHOOOO....there are TOOL fans here on the board.
Alex...forgot to mention I'm a big Manson fan...thumbs up bro!
Tyler...not just any GNR show...specifically the 1988 NEW YORK RITZ show. I'm actually very surprised if you've seen this show. Last time I checked, it's rather hard to come by...there were only a handful of people who had footage from it.
I also happen to have the Miller Light Collectors Vinyl Boxed set of this show. I'm an avid record collector. The set is in mint condition. Only 10 of them were ever made. Full show on vinyl...Think I'll put it on now and sit back and listen...
tyler d 12-02-2006, 10:55 AM Tyler...not just any GNR show...specifically the 1988 NEW YORK RITZ show. I'm actually very surprised if you've seen this show. Last time I checked, it's rather hard to come by...there were only a handful of people who had footage from it.
I remember seeing a GnR gig in a small venue on MTV...Axel actually jumped in the crowd at one point...there was so much pent up energy they made my list of bands I had to see.
Manchester is a great city for music...most everyone comes thru here at some point and our venues are small enough to smell the band!
MotoGPFan26 12-02-2006, 11:17 AM I remember seeing a GnR gig in a small venue on MTV...Axel actually jumped in the crowd at one point...there was so much pent up energy they made my list of bands I had to see.
THAT is the show from the Ritz. Did you get to see the whole thing? I think MTV only aired it once...maybe twice. I've got it on DVD... :D :D
tyler d 12-02-2006, 12:22 PM No way...I had it on video and watched it a hundred times. Way cool that you were there...that gig meant a lot to me second hand, I am not surprised it rates as your number one :bow
I saw the killers a while back in a tiny venue...about 200 people and they were really appreciative that anybody turned up...now they play stadiums...its good to catch band when they are at their best...when they become public property they loose some of the attraction for me.
I am going to have to check out Tool though, seeing as its a Hornet thing! I am sure I have catched some videos (animated guy?)...from memory its in the same mould as Nine Inch Nails and I'm a big fan of Reznor...I'll pay i-tunes a vist I think.
cesu pro 12-02-2006, 01:49 PM you really oughta get tool by the album opposed to by the track (a la itunes)... each album really has a different feel that should be appreciated as a whole.... just my $.02
also, i don't group NIN and Tool together, though i can see how people could (for the record i do like NIN as well, if that makes a difference)
tyler d 12-02-2006, 01:53 PM Thanks for the tip ...so which Tool album is best to start with then?
cesu pro 12-02-2006, 02:18 PM that is certainly a personal choice,... there's enough tool fans here to get a consensus though.....
for me, i'd say get AEnima (the A and E are actually connected, but i don't know how to do that).... that's probably my favorite,.... but others may have different opinions (but really, they're all great, you can't go wrong)
MotoGPFan26 12-02-2006, 06:50 PM I agree with CESU. Tool is nothing like NIN...but I"m also a NIN fan.
I also agree with Aenima as the first album. Song number 6 (titled: 46 and two) is the song that defines TOOL.
Second album I'd say should be Undertow. Not because it's the next best album, but because it is from TOOL's earlier days back in the mid 90's and is really the other album that defines TOOL.
Surprisingly, I'm a big fan of Lateralus (their fourth album). They sort of spent several years out of the studio after doing Aenima, and then a couple of years ago they recorded Lateralus. It was a different direction for them, but still definitive TOOL. If you were a big TOOL fan you would understand what I mean.
Anyway, get Aenima first. Get Lateralus second (I already changed my mind and think you should get Lateralus second now). Get Undertow third ( no need to buy it second since Aenima will have already given you a taste of early TOOL). If you can find a copy of Opiate, I'd buy that fourth. Lastly, pick up 10,000 Days...even though I'm not exactly pleased with the whole album...it's growing on me. Has great artwork in the CD case though...
five99er 12-02-2006, 07:05 PM Whoa, good musical tastes here.
Favs: Mastodon, Between the Buried and Me, Idiom (http://www.myspace.com/idiomdelrio),Tool, Meshuggah, NIN, to name just a few.
Best Gig:, Tool w/Meshuggah in San Antonio. (Also, Pantera in 1994 at Showcase in SA as well).
Guilty Pls. - Hate to say this, but I am a closet hick. I grew up with country and I still enjoy it. No particular artist though.
stringburner 12-08-2006, 09:38 AM Best Concert: Metallica, black album, no opening act. It was great.
Favorite Bands: Metallica (before whatever happened to their style happened), Ozzy, particularly w/ Randy Rhoads on guitar.
I listen to and play traditional acoustic music now, so I don't listen to much of that stuff anymore except on my mp3 player when i'm at the gym. 8)
Favs: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cake, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, U2, Aerosmith, and alot of country, too many to name
Guilty pleasure: 80's rock (GNR, Poison, Tesla, Cheap Trick, etc)
lately the ipod has been playing All American Rejects, Simple Plan, and America (weird mix I know)
Best Concert: Page and Plant @ Fleet Center (TD Banknorth Garden now) 1998. As I was 2 when Bonham drank himself to death, its the closest I'll ever get to a Zeppelin show. Dammit!
By the way, I like some Tool, but haven't heard that much. "sober" is awesome, and the cover of L.Z.'s "no quarter" is incredible! :headbang
Also, I don't know how to link you there, but all tool fans need to see this homage to a tool video- hilarious!
Go to www.homestarrunner.com
Go to "the e-mail" and scroll down to "death metal"
really weird site a friend showed me.
D-E words! :headbang
That's an awesome site! I got put on to it last year...it's pretty hilarious and a great place to go kill some time if you got nothing better to do. The Strongbad emails are the best. Watch 'em with your friends and you'll all be quoting it in no time.
rndthought 12-14-2006, 10:15 PM Drew... TESLA YES! and that site makes me feel like my whole life has been a waste. Good stuff. :thumbsup
MotoGPFan26 12-16-2006, 08:02 PM By the way, I like some Tool, but haven't heard that much. "sober" is awesome, and the cover of L.Z.'s "no quarter" is incredible! :headbang
Ahhh...you have the Tool DVD set I see...as the extra CD that comes with that set is the only place to hear Tool's cover of No Quarter. You are right...it is excellent. Weird I was just talking to someone about that cover last night before I left work.
Drew, you've got great musical taste. Looks like you and I could be the same person.
Pearl Jam is my FAVORITE band of all time. If I had to listen to ONLY ONE band 24 hours a day for the rest of my life...it would be Pearl Jam. I've got every CD and DVD they've ever produced. Got tons of old bootlegs (before they started producing their own bootlegs and selling them), tons of video footage from LOTS of their shows...you name it, I've got it. Still have my T-shirts from the first time I ever saw Pearl Jam live back in 1992 at Lollapalooza...man...oh how I remember those days. They've only gotten better though as time has gone on...
I think I'm going to change my avatar now...
cesu pro 12-16-2006, 08:40 PM i am a definite pearl jam fan as well....
just curious... your take on the new album? yay or nay?
MotoGPFan26 12-16-2006, 09:07 PM i am a definite pearl jam fan as well....
just curious... your take on the new album? yay or nay?
Tough question. At first, I would have been inclined to say NAY. But, if you look back at Pearl Jam's history, they have always enjoyed experimentation and trying to take their music in different directions. Their newest album sort of reminds me of when they did "No COde" and "Yield." Those albums were complete flops EXCEPT for Pearl Jam's diehard fans. I think this album is kind of the same. If you're a true Pearl Jam fan, the album sort of grows on you. I was really unsure of it at first...until I got to listening to it. I listened to "Marker in the Sand" which I fell in love with, and then I listened to the next song "Parachute" which is very melodic...and from there...the album just started growing on me.
"Ten" will ALWAYS be their best album. "Breath" will always be ONE of their best songs...and of course "State of Love and Trust." Who am I kidding...all of their stuff is the best...just depends on my particular mood at the moment.
To answer your question...after forcing myself to listen to the new album, and remembering that I am a very loyal Pearl Jam fan, and opening my mind up and remembering what Pearl Jam is all about...I can say that I do like the new album. Just took me a bit of time to open up to it...
cesu pro 12-16-2006, 09:14 PM yea, i am pretty much agree... at first i didn't really like it at all... but the more i listened to it, the more it grew on me. I thought it would have been a lot better if it came right after vs. or vitalogy. speaking of vs., it is my favorite album, hands down ("BLASPHEMY! not TEN! how dare you!" you may say,.... and i say.... goddamn if vs. doesn't have the greatest opening (OH those drums! "Please don't go out on me") and closing tracks (indifference, come on...) of any cd (except for maybe feticeria on deftones white pony, that is my all time best opening track of a cd,.. if you're familiar with the song you know what i mean...)
and on another side note,... i also really like no code,... it's probably my favorite in that "era" of questionable albums... though riot act is great too...
anyways, back on topic, yea,... self titled grew on me once i listened to it more... it's just very "eddie" but once you get past that you can really enjoy it.
OK, hopefully this link works for you. If you like music and are familiar with some classic album covers, you will love this. Someone has way too much time on their hand. Warning, its a little graphic...

My personal top 2 as far as Tool albums go is
1. Undertow (top choice for me)
2. Opiate
Undertow is what got me hooked on Tool. I didn't take the damn tape out of my player for months! I say start with the old stuff, feel the roots of this band, and then move on to the later stuff.
OH! almost forgot, for all you guys that like Tool, I highly recommend you check out a band called Earshot.
MotoGPFan26 12-17-2006, 05:34 PM OH! almost forgot, for all you guys that like Tool, I highly recommend you check out a band called Earshot.
+1
First time I ever heard Earshot I thought TOOL had come out with a new CD that I wasn't aware of...of course this was several years ago...
Earshot is a great band...

that was great... :thumbsup
tyler d 12-18-2006, 05:26 AM Favourite Pearl Jam album has to be Vitalogy...came out on the day I got some very bad news and its been special ever since...in fact, that and In Utero have got me thru some pretty tough times (Cobain died so that we didn't have to!).
Recently I have been listening to Peeping Tom...Mike Pattons new band and its very ingenious...it even features Norah Jones with a foul mouth wich must be worth a listen.
Its wierd, either the only people who answer this post have the same tastes as me or we are all clones...which may explain why we chose the same bike...
...and I checked out Tool on Pandora and it is well and truly up my street...so thankou 8)
Along the lines of Earshot is a band called Exilia. Find an album called Unleased. Give them a shot.
cesu pro 12-18-2006, 11:20 AM patton's stuff is always worth a listen... it's hard for me to warrant a purchase now-a-days.... but norah jones and a potty mouth sound hot to me....
tyler d 12-18-2006, 12:25 PM patton's stuff is always worth a listen... it's hard for me to warrant a purchase now-a-days.... but norah jones and a potty mouth sound hot to me....
Patton can even corrupt Ms Jones...seriously check it out
MotoGPFan26 12-19-2006, 05:23 PM ("BLASPHEMY! not TEN! how dare you!" you may say,.... and i say.... goddamn if vs. doesn't have the greatest opening (OH those drums! "Please don't go out on me")
... though riot act is great too...
TEN is the BEST PJ album...period, end of discussion. 8) Come on man, it was the album that put them on the charts...it was the album that everybody knew and loved in the middle of the grunge era (the same era I happened to grow up in). I was 15 when I went to see Pearl Jam at Lollapalooza in 1992. I grew up with all those bands, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Janes Addiction, Jesus and Mary Chain, Pixies, TOOL, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden...anyway...TEN sticks out amongst all those guys.
I think they've produced some phenominal music since their first album. But TEN will always be the best because of what it is. It may not be the most musically ingenius like some of their other recent albums (i.e. Binaural, No Code, Riot Act), but it is still the best PJ album because it is so raw...
Anyway...different strokes for different folks, but all PJ fans know TEN is infamous...
rndthought 12-20-2006, 08:08 AM ...been listening to Peeping Tom...Mike Pattons new band
Is this the guy from Faith No More / Misfits?
tyler d 12-20-2006, 08:35 AM Was lead singer of faith no more after the first album...and went on to do solo stuff and then Tomahawk and now peeoping tom. Not sure about the Misfits connection. The mans a genius...and its so cool that he's managed to stay alive long enough to keep entertaining us!
rndthought 12-20-2006, 09:22 AM Thought he helped on an album but could be confused as I listened to Faith a lot also back then... kinda lost touch with his work, will check it out. Thanks.
cesu pro 12-20-2006, 02:38 PM he also did mr. bungle and fantomas among other things...
tyler d 12-20-2006, 03:10 PM Ahh...Mr Bungle...how could I forget! The most un subtle band in the world!
yeroC 12-22-2006, 11:00 AM i guess you guys all pretty much like the same shit. that's cool. My
tastes are kinda all over.
i'm a brother from NY so i grew up with original hip hop and such.
But my parents listened to everything from Motown and Ohio Players
to Billy Joel and Santana etc.
Some of my favorite stuff right now is: MF DOOM, Quasimoto, Dilla,
Madlib, Ghostface Killa, Little Brother, Yesterday's New Quintet, Aesop Rock, M.O.P.(mash out posse),
I love old bad brains, fishbone, HR, Black Uhuru, Bunny Wailer, Sizzla.
I love fusion and modern jazz not the sterile, elevator type shit but the sweaty Miles Davis, Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius,
Modern Jazz Quartet kinda stuff.
Been to way too many shows to mention but one of the best would be
Bad Brains in Richmond,VA or Steel Pulse in Norfolk.
Guilty pleasure would be listening to new age type shit. Good
background vibe for concentration or relaxing. But only for short
periods.
But I'm basically open to alot of stuff. was even quite into punk
for a while back in the day. Alot of Black Flag, bad brains, c.o.c.,
circle jerks, suicidal, etc.
MotoGPFan26 12-22-2006, 12:20 PM Ahhhhhh...FISHBONE...how could I have forgot Fishbone?? They are great...and have been a part of my life since way back in Highschool.
Coltrane..anyone who likes John Coltrane has real sense of what music is all about. :thumbsup
Speaking of...I'm going to go put on some Coltrane now...
rndthought 12-23-2006, 02:24 PM Speaking of...I'm going to go put on some Coltrane now...

yeroC 01-19-2007, 05:56 AM nice. I never listened to much Cult. i think i might've had a

But after giving this Ozric Tentacles cd about three good listens,
i'm hooked. theyve got a ton of shit. the album i'm checking
out is "spice doubt".
Moto, you might like this type stuff???

tyler d 02-15-2007, 01:44 PM For all you Tool fans out there, what do you make of A Perfect Circle? Thats who Tool remind me of...its been bugging me for ages!
...A Perfect Circle? Thats who Tool remind me of...
+1 The first time I heard Perfect Circle I thought it was Tool. Not my favorite, but very good stuff nonetheless. :thumbsup
cesu pro 02-16-2007, 12:56 AM A perfect circle reminds you of tool because it is the same singer (Maynard James Keenan). I enjoyed APC's first album (mer de noms) quite a bit... the ones that followed were a little more hit and miss. Still, they're a good band, not the same as tool, but i guess that's the point. APC is a little less "dark" is the best way to put it i suppose? but, mer de noms is a great album anyway you slice it.... give that one a shot.

2. Jedi Mind Trick "Violent by Design" (more of that real shit)
3. J Dilla "Ruff Draft" (one of my favorite artist/producer! passed away '06)
4. Sun Ra "Pathways to Unknown Worlds" (eclectic, trippy jazz pioneer)
5. Chrome Children "Stones Throw presents..."
6. Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" (awesome voice, something different)
My buddy has me listening to the Decemberists while we work out.
Not bad, i can dig it. Not exactly my cup o tea but i'm cool with it. 8)

Sundog 07-31-2007, 02:53 PM Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's latest album is really good. But you can only listen to it if you have a black 599.

Oh baby YA! NEW ORDER!!!!! I grew up on the other side of the pond and frequented Manchester and just loved the whole scene. I love New Wave, still do. Factory records in the early to late 80's was the only label to actually be "romantic" enough to let some of the most brilliant artists create the newest sounds of the time. Modern pop owes everything to the New Wave scene of Manchester!
DarkTint 08-08-2007, 10:35 AM Well Hungarians
Anyone ever listen to these bands?
Surprised to hear someone outside of St. Louis mention the Well Hungarians! They've been well known here locally for years now, and although I admit to never hearing their album(s?), I've seen them many times at bars and clubs, and they always draw a crowd and put on a good show.
ukkev 08-08-2007, 12:56 PM "Half man half biscuit" is a great band name in my book .. :D
Hard to choose favorite music. FWIW this is what's in my CD player right now:

599001 09-09-2007, 03:43 PM Fav. group--System Of A Down
Best show (I'm so lucky to have seen it) Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Deftones--Feb. 1998--Skydome, in Toronto!
Guilty pleasure--The Tragically Hip.
cannon 09-10-2007, 07:34 PM Favorite overall band: Rolling Stones
Favorite band for style: The Mummies
Favorite Riding Band: The Dead Kennedys
Most Hated: Anything pop, rap, or anything now labeled 'alternative'.
Best Gig: The Stones in '89
Loudest Gig: The Cramps in '92 or so. The ears are still ringing.
Guilty Pleasure: I have U2's New Years Day on my ipod. I have been known to listen to classical and even an italian opera or two at home. Tell anyone and you die.
Funniest Band Name: The Gaza Strippers
robkb 11-17-2007, 12:38 PM A couple of buddies and I set up the Unknown Steve Earle Fan and Cycle Club (U.S.E.F.C.C.) a few years ago. The only requirements: You must dig Steve Earle. No dues, no meetings, and I'm the only one who actually has a motorcycle so far. If you want to join, you can go ahead and call yourself the President of your area's chapter. It's all in our heads; nothing official, but, that's the "unknown" part of it. Girls like it when they find out I'm the president of the Mississippi Chapter. Colorado has one member, as well as Nashville, TN. Anyone out there want to be the Minister of Defense?
JohnG 11-17-2007, 04:49 PM worlds greatest rock-n-roll band..the rolling stones...
JBarx 11-17-2007, 06:33 PM Okay...this has kinda been touched on in the listening whilst riding debate...what kind of music are you into
Catagories - Fave band(s), best gig, guilty pleasure - the band that you don't tell anyone you like!
Add your own as you see fit...most influential...most hated etc.
Okay... based upon my personal tastes, album sales, critcism, influence on the industry, and longevity...
The Best Rock Bands of All Time (this is not debatable, I'm sorry but I am The Authority  ):
5. Metallica
4. Nirvana
3. Guns N' Roses
2. The Beatles
1. Led Zeppelin
And it's Zeppelin by a nose. Obviously, there are a lot of Honorable Mentions... The Stones, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, etc.
As for me on a completely personal level...? My favorites in no particular order (explanations in parentheses):
Linkin Park (the last survivor of the rap/rock era)
Everclear (from World of Noise/White Trash Hell through Slow Motion Daydream)
My Chemical Romance (intruiging, and their twin-guitar flip-flop rhythm and lead playing is exquisite... and Way's vocals on The Black Parade are much improved)
Nirvana (no explanation necessary)
Led Zeppelin (see above)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Fruchiante and Smith are badly underrated)
Stone Temple Pilots (crafty songwriting for "grunge-era")
The Smashing Pumpkins (earlier stuff)
The Beastie Boys (come on... they're the Beasties)
Another group that made above-average studio albums but sucks live so badly that I have to say it's a guilty pleasure:
Third Eye Blind
Another guilty pleasure:
Matchbox Twenty. I hate it but they write some nice melodies.
Best gig: Much to my surprise... I'm gonna go with Everclear in 1998 at the Orlando House of Blues. Maybe not the outright "best" gig, but it surpassed my expectations so much that I was really blown away.
robkb 11-17-2007, 06:50 PM Good call, JBarx! Metallica's "black" album is on my top 5 list of albums. So is Steve Earle's "The Hard Way", Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", everything by The Beatles, and two more... WTF! I can't think of them right now. NOTHING COMPARES TO METALLICA WHEN IT COMES TO DRUMS! Dude, I'm fixing to go beat somebody up right this instant just thinking about those drums! Believe it or not, I know nothing about Metallica other than that "black" album. What else is JUST as great by them? Tell me later; I gotta go listen to some shit and get punched in the face!
gdblairin 11-17-2007, 10:55 PM Corrosion of conformity (Blind) for the ride up to the ski slopes.
Most rockin show was Suicidal Tendencies in 91.
Best show was Steely Dan in 94 at the gorge in George. (front row)
c89worldwide.com best internet station!
Peace....

come on...... drums? rush hands down... with tool as a close second....
metallica? meh..... lars is too...... how do you say nicely..... gay? (not that there's anything wrong with that....)
JBarx 11-18-2007, 01:01 PM come on...... drums? rush hands down... with tool as a close second....
I can't argue with that. Rush and Tool have the drums cornered. Lars is good... but not great like those guys.
robkb 11-18-2007, 01:22 PM I've never listened to Tool. I will check them out. Yeah, Rush has a drummer (Neil Pert ? spelling ?) I just like how Metallica makes me feel. Every now and then, when I'm not listening to The Beatles, I'll throw in my Metallica CD and just freak out.
02KBGT 11-18-2007, 03:00 PM Metallica Is deffinatly an Icon in the music industry...And one of my favorites.. And robKb, you need to listen to metallica's old stuff.. "One" , "and Justice for all", "Fuel" etc... Go buy "Ride the Lightning" , "Master of Puppets" "Justice" ..Those are some Classic Albums...IMO nothing can beat the old stuff...Incredible..
Lately I've been into the Techno-Metal pretty heavy and Best concert I've ever seen was either at Starwood Theatre in Nashville, TN (Metallica , Kandlebox, Alice in chains) in 1991.. Or in 1992 At Vanderbilt Stadium I saw Pink Floyd... And I'll have to give Floyd the edge.. Almost A Life changing experience... And Very very close to the top is Pearl Jam At Murfree's Center in Murfreesboro ,TN.. I gotta give props to Eddie Vedder.. I've never seen anyone or anything have control over people like he did.. Was almost spooky the way he could manipulate ...
