View Full Version : Trouble fitting the Givi Windscreen
So I bought the Givi 240A windscreen from our friend five99er. I spent almost an hour fiddling with the damn thing trying to install it, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get the front screws (that go into the headlight) to tighten - it was as if they were the wrong size (a mm too narrow or something). So finally, I said "f it" and decided to put the original front screws in just to make sure that my headlight doesn't fall out and now the original screws aren't holding in place!!! :rant
Suggestions? Ideas? What the hell am I supposed to do now?
PS. I'm running out to lunch, I'll be back in 30-40 min.

rndthought 12-07-2006, 02:31 PM Either you stripped the threads out (doubtful) or whatever the screws thread into is loose, look around down there and see if there are some loose nuts or some other fastener. I'm in the car today so can't check for you...
Ba55man 12-07-2006, 02:35 PM Undo the screws holding the silver bezel around the headlight glass, and take off the glass inside the headlight bowl you will see where the nut that the headlight bolts screws into has fallen into the bowl the nut has a retainer to hold the wires inside the bowl.
HTH :D
sloan 12-07-2006, 02:41 PM The "nuts" are held in place by the bolts, so when you take them out they fall down in the headlight. They are actually an assembly with these flexible pieces attached that help hold the wiring in place inside the headlight.
You need to remove the headlight lens and bulb assembly from the bike leaving just the black "back" of the headlight assembly in place. I think if you look in the MOM in the part about replacing headlight bulbs it might describe the removal process. Be sure that you don't loosen the horizontal adjustment as that part is a different screw. Then, after you get the windscreen bracket bolts back in, you can re-assemble the headlight. Before you start, check the vertical aim of your headlight if you still can (I didn't) because this will loosen the vertical adjustment. There are a couple of lines or index marks on the headlight bracket and the assembly that helps line them up when you put it back together.
Having the Honda service manual was very helpful in figuring this one out and seeing how the threaded parts go back in.
What would I do without you guys? I'd probably go to a dealership so they could rip me off. I'll try to fix this... and let you know how it goes.
Thanks!!!
:disco I fixed it!!! :disco Thank you guys! :friday
PS. I like how it looks. Very neat. We'll see how it feels in the evening when I go home.

Eeek! Those corn-on-a-cub turn signals are coming off next.
Looks great, AleX. I'd love to hear your height and where the wind hits you (if it does) after you've had a chance to do some around town and highway miles.
You shall hear from me.
five99er 12-07-2006, 07:32 PM Glad you got it. Looks good.
So you did all that at work??? ... I want your job. 8)
Oh, and, um...DANCE, BANANA, DANCE! GET DOWN ON IT!!!
Super Sneaky Steve 12-07-2006, 08:48 PM Hey, I like that one! I like clear ones.
Don't feel bad, I was turning the screw for a while before I figured it out too. :)
mechanic77 12-07-2006, 08:49 PM looks kewl glad you found the elusive bolt/bracket assembly that as you have found out falls out of place with no bolts in it
Looks good though great job dude
Thanks.
One problem - I don't think I like riding with a windscreen. It's for sale if anyone wants it - $100 bucks plus $10 for shipping.
Also, Five99er, correct me if I'm wrong, but it has the pieces necessary if you want to put this thing on a 919, too, right?
antihero 12-08-2006, 11:57 AM That bad, eh? Care to explain what you didn't like about it?
I think this windscreen would work well for someone who's a little shorter/smaller than me. With my height (I'm 5'8 but have a long, somewhat wide torso) and with my tendency to ride totally upright, the wind hits me right in the neck. I don't care for that. Given that it doesn't get that cold here, I think it would be a lot wiser of me to buy some thermal clothing instead.
Chris (MotoGP) loves his windshield (same model), so I guess it's a matter of personal preference.
Is anyone interested in taking it off my hands? It's still in perfect condition.

I totally get what you're saying about the win hitting you in the neck, and I'll personally add that it hits you between the top of your chest up to about the chin area on your helmet. I know exactly what you're talking about.
I'm a bit taller than you at 5'9" and a half. My inseam is 26" so I'm ALL torso. When I ride upright I get all the wind smaking me right in my chest, but it doesn't really hit hard enough to notice until you get to about 65mph, which means I"m on the highway, and more than likely traveling a little bit of distance. I like the wind hitting my chest at 65mph because it helps me take pressure off my arms holding the bars. I just let the wind take up some of my weight...am I making sense? The rest of the time on the highway I'm tucked in enough that I THINK I could do 130 and not feel the wind. I can tell you that when I tuck in behind my Givi I can't feel the wind up to about 105mph...haven't been any faster than that, and that was only once.
If I ride around in town at 35 or 40mph the wind doesn't matter to much anyway...at that speed the wind is just enough to just "feel nice" hitting you.
Like you said, it's a very personal preference. I think you know right away the first time you get to 60mph. I fell in love with mine immediately. I can't imagine riding without it now.
I'm sorry it didn't work out for ya man...I had really hoped you would enjoy it as much as I do. In the summer, I'll probably take mine off so I get plenty of wind hitting me...otherwise, my Givi is never coming off...
As a side note, I had the same problem with the bolts. I guess everyone's bolt retainer type thingy falls into the headlight assembly. I heard mine fall in...
antihero 12-08-2006, 01:23 PM How do you find pants with an inseam of 26? I'm a 30 and it's hard to find anything that fits right.
five99er 12-08-2006, 01:28 PM Thanks.

I believe the other bracket is for a CB900, not sure if that is a UK bike or what.

I have to buy 30" inseam and then wash and dry the hell out of them or take them to a seamstress and haev length cut off. It sucks...

All the more baffling why you'd want "clip-on" style handlebars.

CB900 = 919
CB600 = 599

Or you could just get some lower bars...problem solved! (Hey, i'm just trying to give you a good excuse to do another mod. I mean, that's what true friends do, right? )

Good point...You're making me rethink the clip-on's now... 8) 8) 8)

That's the route I'm going - just bought some Renthal Ultra Lows that will go on this Winter. I'm not a big bling guy, but the gold sure does go nice with the calipers. 8)
Oh yeah...me and Ken got da bling, yo! 8)
I think this damn windshield is growing on me... I may decide to keep it after all. :D
Super Sneaky Steve 12-12-2006, 01:30 PM Alex, you need to glue on some shiney stones so you can be bling like Ken.

What's changing your mind?
I find that getting the wind off my chest keeps me a bit warmer than before... but generally, I think I'm just adjusting to it.
Super Sneaky Steve 12-14-2006, 10:47 AM As soon as it warms up my windshield/handguards are comming off.

Not the windshield...it makes the bike look sexier...

Um...yeah. Maybe in that librarian chick with glasses kind of way. Which, don't get me wrong, can be hot...but i'd rather have my baby with her glasses off and hair down, if you know what i mean.
I'm not much of a fan of a windshield on a naked bike unless it's small and very streamlined. So far i haven't seen one i really like better than nothing at all. 8)
I'm with JMD here, l like my baby naked.
MotoGPFan26 12-16-2006, 08:16 PM Well, interestingly enough, I've always liked chics with that wear glasses. My wife wears contacts...though I BEG her to wear her little small elongated squared of glasses...she just won't do it...
Guess I'll keep the glasses on my bike since my wife won't wear hers...
mechanic77 12-16-2006, 08:59 PM Yeppers I got a screen and its kewl when you are going 120+ and tuck down behind it and it feels like you tucked down into zero gravity or a vacuum from the lower pressures then you realize you are getting close to 150 and let off and sit up and feel like you just jumped up into a tornado hehehehe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
