View Full Version : Radiator fan not working???

Ok guys, started up the bike this morning...50 degrees outside today. Let the bike run awhile while I was finishing getting dressed. Put on my gear and came outside to find my temp gauge pegged all the way to the top and coolant spewing out of a little open-ended hose right by the water pump (looks like a resevoir spill-over type of hose).

Let the bike cool down. Started it back up and let it get all the way up to the red to see if the fan was working. NOPE. Fan never came on. Any idea why my fan is not coming on to cool the fluid in the radiator so my engine doesn't bake.

Do you guys think I caused any damage to my engine when it went up to redline and started spewing coolant?

I've rode it around town now and no problems that I can tell. Just my damn fan isn't coming on when the temps get up high.

Check the left hand side under the tank there's a connector to the fan... When i went for my service check a while back they for some reason disconnected it and then forgot to re-connect it.... if not that check for a blown fuse?

After reading your reply, I opened up the manual to find the fuse box location. Manual clearly says "if any electrical part ceases to work, check fuses FIRST." Well, it was a blown fuse. I wonder how that happened? Anyway, replaced the 10amp fuse and fan works.

I was getting worried it might be the thermostat or worse, the water pump. It never dawned on me to check the fuse.

Well, did a coolant change today...so because of a blown fuse my cooling system got brand new fluid today. The coolant is Prestone premixed long life coolant and is supposed to be good for 150,000 miles or 5 years.

J-nuine, thanks for the tip on the blown fuse. This has really been distressing me today.

That's odd. Keep an eye on it and I'd buy another fuse(s) and put them in with the tool kit just in case it happens some place other than in the convenience of your garage. And if it does happen again I’d start tracing the wires and see if they are chafed or pinched anywhere…

When the guy sold me my bike, he said it was a common thing to check on these bikes. Always carry a spare Rad Fan fuse. It seems my bike has already blown one before.. might be related to the battery?? i dunno

If this is true (first I hear of it) then maybe try upping the 10A to a 12A. That would be the equivalent of a 10A Time Delay or Slow Blow... Maybe stop the nuisance tripping.

i might try that if it blows gain...

Make sure there is not a little stone or some other foreign body stopping the fan from turning as this is overlooked in most cases.

It was a blown fuse...already fixed it last week. Good thought though about foreign object obstruction...
