Chain clean "611" by Motorex. Works awesome to remove grime etc. It is O and X ring safe. Spray on, let it sit for a min or two, then wipe off with a rag, and lube with whatever chain lube you like. ( I use bel-ray superclean chain lube)

parafin works very well.

Paraffin = kerosene, so +1.

And I'm not sure what chain cleaning tool you are referring to, but mine is an old toothbrush. Works fine.
