View Full Version : My custom eliminated fender
Chris G 02-16-2007, 03:59 PM I will post up some better pictures when i figure out what camera i am getting but here are some quick cell phone shots.
First i hacked off my fender with a saw then cleaned it up with some long clippers to make a straight cut.
I used a Target mount and just mounted inside my rear license plate light. (way more empty space in their than i thought.

I didn't have to cut any wires or make any new holes everything was just used in the same place as before. and i love the fact that it already have bullet connectors so i didn't have to solder any adaptors in.

Mounted up great but i still want to remove more of the undertail up to the key hole.
NEXT UP: taking my silver grab rail into the shop across the street to have it powder coated black, and front turn signals to match the new ones.

Looks great! Can't wait to see higher-res pictures of this.
Super Sneaky Steve 02-16-2007, 06:01 PM You did a great job there.
Feels good to make stuff doesn't it?
vthoky 02-16-2007, 07:49 PM i still want to remove more of the undertail up to the key hole.
Can't believe somebody (Steve, perhaps?) hasn't made fun of that phrase yet.
yelladog 02-20-2007, 01:34 PM Would you please be so kind as to give us specific instructions with parts for you mod?
I for one would like to do something similar, but don't want to mess things in the process. I've seen a couple places online that sell license plate holders with led lights.
Thanks for helping.
YD
Chris G 02-20-2007, 02:40 PM I used a Target license plate holding bracket and Cat Eye black turn signals.
As far as i know the 06 599 has bullet connectors so you dont have to solder anything. Its fair simple to do just takes time to clean up and setup.
andrewp 02-20-2007, 11:08 PM i wish the key hole was located somewhere else because i don't think you can't really remove much more. i can't figure out what to do with mine. most motorcycle fender/undertail areas look like such an after-thought in my opinion. i've never seen one that follows the lines of the bike.
roost77 02-21-2007, 12:53 PM i totally agree man. that was my same complaint when i did the same mod to my bike. you would think honda would've located the keyhole to the same place as the 919 :? I hacked mine the same way chrisg did, I just used a turn signal integrator for signals. It works good but i still like to use the old hand signals.- Looks great Chris!!!
jfeagin 04-05-2007, 10:27 AM If you're willing to pay the price for Ermax or a couple of other Euro brand undertrays, they move the keyhole piece up underneath. But if you look at it, the key just actuates a cable. So if you were brave enough (and cheap), you could maybe find a spot to relocate the keyhole piece on the stock undertray and then really hack away at the fender.

What is a Target mount?
I've looked all over for it and a Targa license plate holder and cannot find one anywhere.
I'd like to do the same to my bike and I already have LED signals to put on, but I cannot find the same license plate holder you're using or one just like it.
Thanks
ranger5oh 04-08-2007, 05:50 PM I kinda have a feeling he means a mount he bought at Target? Not sure... just guessing.
please correct me if I am wrong.
Look up Targe accessories...
Actually, here you go: http://www.targa-acc.com/
I believe that's what he's talking about. I've bought a few things there, myself.
Chris G 04-09-2007, 08:45 AM Didn't even notice that its a Targa mount
rndthought 04-09-2007, 12:04 PM So I go to the TARGA site and pick out a couple of little things (cable lube thing, nifty brake bleader nipples and a cargo net for the back) total around $25...Shipping $25!!!!!!!! $25 for maybe 2 pounds UPS Ground...WTF?
UPS online quote (the most expensive) for 2 pounds from 90210 to Orlando (about the farthest you can go)...$8.45
3x shipping...? Canceled order. :(
Chris G 04-09-2007, 01:45 PM They are semi local to me so my dealer just picks up any targa items for me.
Darth Vrees 06-29-2007, 06:08 PM I just did the exact same to mine today, and it turned out really good. I was a bit spooked at first holding the hacksaw to the fender but after one stroke, I was given'er! I'm just hoping my new marker lights are in tomorrow as I had to use the big UFO's still until the good one arrive! :) Next step......EXHAUST!!!! Hindle here we come!
Chris G 07-02-2007, 02:01 PM Yea its funny the hack saw just cuts it like butter.
theparkland 02-08-2008, 05:35 PM It took me a while to find that bracket on the Targa site, but I believe it is:
TARGA BLACK ALUMINUM LICENSE MOUNT w/TURNSIGNAL BRACKETs
Price: $18.95
Part No: 22-511
Manufacturer: TARGA
I'm going to order myself one...yesterday I snapped off my left turn signal on a phone pole that's right next to my garage while backing out of my driveway. :(
Good excuse to get the dremel out and do a little customizing!
dexx85 02-08-2008, 09:09 PM Has anyone tried just bending the left-over tab on the stock license plate mount to mount after-stock signals? Maybe grinding down the license plate bolt and nut to make room on the back side?
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/1678/dsc00063vy5.jpg
And how well does the right side signal clear the exhaust after this mod?

JohnG 02-09-2008, 06:30 AM that looks good!
theparkland 04-17-2008, 11:50 AM I got my new signals and the mount from Targa (nice guys in my experience, and quick shipping though I'm close by in LA).
Before I start taking the body apart -- I have a bad habit of taking much more apart than necessary for every job...just can't stop turning that wrench -- what is needed to get to the connectors and take off the license plate light housing?
lowcash 05-14-2008, 05:12 PM Chris! have made any new photos of the mounts? curious to see how close the the exhaust the turn signals is.

it is getting hit by the exhaust and needs a little adjusting, i will see about getting pictures up when it nice and sunny outside =)

SWEET! that whole rear fender is an eye sore. Really like the setup you got, so lets hope for some sunny days!

Get that blinker on a diet too...
Mobotix 08-18-2010, 03:45 PM I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead. How do you go about removing the license plate light? I would assume that removing the tail is required?
DH919 08-18-2010, 03:57 PM it does require removing the rear cowl, which isn't very hard. I've got an extra rear fender if you want a back up... Sell it cheap!
