just brought my new 06 home from the dealer and it won't start. The dealer said that there is a fuel switch that we need to turn on, on the left side of the bike, but can't find it anywhere. does anyone know anything about it?

No fuel switch on my '06. There is gas in the tank? Kill switch in the "run" position? Doublecheck that the trans is in neutral. Shift to another gear and back to neutral just to make sure. If not, the kickstand has to be up.
Just brought it home? The dealer should be stopping by tomorrow to help you.

We need more info. Does it turn over? Does it make a noise? Do the lights come on?
Tell us everything you know.

You have it set to FUEL on the little switch to the left directly under the gas tank right?

I mirror SSS when he says, we do need to know more. But just some things that I have occasionally overlooked on my '06:
like Price mentioined
make sure she's in neutral - if not, kickstand needs to be up
also, make sure choke is in the choke position (down, not up)
make sure the battery is charged (for some reason, the battery charger in the bike was not "working right" when I brought my bike home. Went ahead and bought a charger and a trickle charger but after recharging the battery twice in three weeks, I took it back to the dealership and they did a "check" and said nothing was wrong. It's been fine ever since - which I think means the bike's internal charger had not been connected until I took it back to them)

Based on the information provided and my Magic 8 Ball...."Try Again"
Hope this helps.
Be very particular and descriptive in what it is doing exactly (noises, smells, vibrations, tastes, lights...or lack of these things) when you do what ever it is you do (turn key to on, push starter button).
BTW - did you make sure the thumb kill switch is "on"?
I am reading this post and thinking " If there is'nt a fuel switch(tap)we call it How do you go to the reserve fuel in the tank?" there MUST be something there its round and black with a small projection make sure the projectoin is pointing to ON or if you are low on fuel RES and yes it is vaccum operated :thumbsup
