View Full Version : tire questions
cybil hamartia 02-19-2007, 06:44 PM hey, y'all.
it will be time, before too terribly long, for me to replace the stock front tire on my bike. the bike came with pilot roads, and i've been pretty happy with them--so far 11K, with no problems.
what's strange to me is that the FRONT seems like it probably only has a couple thousand more left on it, while the BACK seems like it will make it to 16K! has anyone had similar experiences? i've never seen this with a bike before, and i don't have any idea why the front would wear faster than the rear.
for what it's worth, i a pretty skinny dude--probably 135 in full winter gear. but on my (only) previous bike, the rear would always get about 2/3 of what the front would.
any input is appreciated.
cheers!

DarkTint 02-19-2007, 10:46 PM The front on my '04 wore out faster than the rear as well. I couldn't figure out the explanation either, but I never worried about it much.
As for a replacement, as you might have read on other threads, I'm a big fan of Pilot Powers.
yamawho 02-20-2007, 09:03 AM I'm more than happy with the Michelin Pilot's that came with my 599.
I have never been in the rain with them so I can't comment on that but for the joy riding that I do they do the job well. The grip is very good on does not slip on painted lines.
I owned a set of Pirelli's years ago on my Interceptor and they would always slip riding over painted lines in the dry. On painted lines in the wet it was like riding on ice ! I finally changed both to Metzeler's and it was like night and day.
If I needed a replacement, I would go with the Michelin Pilot's again.

cybil hamartia 02-20-2007, 03:19 PM thanks for the thread reference, Steve. one tire that seems comparable to the pilot roads in terms of durability and stick in various conditions is the avon storm ... no one mentioned it in the other thread, so i take it no one has any experience with them on the 599.
while there's no reason to fix what ain't broke, i'm still a little curious about the avons....
cheers!

Super Sneaky Steve 02-20-2007, 06:33 PM Go ahead and try them out. Tires ware out quickly anyway. I'd like to hear your opinion of them.
vthoky 02-20-2007, 06:50 PM Yeah, yeah! Try 'em out! I used to work for an Avon dealer, and I'd certainly consider putting Avons on my '06 when the time comes. (In fact, I'm looking at Avon as replacements on my Pathfinder, but I suppose that's a thread for a different forum.)
How 'bout our European counterparts? Any thoughts from you guys on Avon? The brand seems to be more popular there than here, in general. Have you any experience with Avon motorcycle tires? (Or should I say, "tyres?")
vladut50 02-06-2009, 06:03 AM Anyone using the Bridgestones BT 016 on their Hornets? I intend buying them, and I wonder how they perform on a 2000 Honda 599.
dabinche 02-06-2009, 11:16 AM I'm gonna try out the pilot road or maybe the dual compound version on my next set. So far with the diablo strada I have over 9k miles and they seem like they will do 15k miles.

Hey, it's been a while since I visited the forum and I know there have been some changes. The link above doesn't work -- is that as a result of the software change?
I'm still searching for my replacement BT-056 rear (darned roofing nail).... :rant
vthoky 02-11-2009, 08:04 PM Okay, so I've found my BT-56 rear at a place called Tire Express.
Anybody know anything about 'em? I'd never heard of them before.

Well, the only thing i could think of would be if you don't do alot of hard accelerating but do alot of hard front braking.
I put Pilot Roads on my SV650 about 3500 miles ago and they have a ton of tread left. I think they are great sport touring/commuting tires. Even on cold 40 degree mornings (ok, it's cold for LA) the tires immediately feel balanced and steering is neutral. I have my PSI at 33 front and 36 rear.
I have Pilot Powers on my 919 and think they are most excellent for sport riding but not commuting. I've noticed that when it's cold out, my tire PSI will be correct (32 front/ 34 rear - for canyons), but the steering will feel very heavy until the tires have sufficiently warmed up.
I previously had Bridgestone BT-021's on my SV and didn't like them. Handling was too stiff, tires were too stiff, grip was not great.
vthoky 02-19-2009, 06:49 PM Well, poo. I placed my order at Tire Express on Saturday, and I got a call on Monday saying that the BT-56 is not available. I called them on Tuesday, and I've got BT-021 scheduled to be here ... tomorrow! And for about ten bucks less.
It's not exactly the solution I wanted, but it'll get me on the road again. :)

I know exactly what you mean. It doesn't bother me too much though. In my experience, they're back in business after just a couple minutes.
carlitos_92 02-22-2009, 08:31 AM Well, I probably will not go with Pilot Powers again... :?
I've noticed this morning that I have a gigantic flat spot in one area of the rear tire, pretty much past the wear bars and as deep as any of the grooves. The rest of the tire is pretty decent with several thousand more miles on it if it were not for the flattening because of my mostly full-vertical freeway commute.
I can only assume the flat spot was from one incident where I locked up the rear wheel in a panic stop and slid maybe 100 feet in a glorious, semi-controlled smoky episode. At the time, it was pretty funny in a "Whew, almost bit it that time," but seeing my tire now (and knowing how much a new one costs) has taken away any sense of relief.
All in all, I probably got about 4K out of the tire, but I gotta find a compund a little harder next time. For the time being, I will probably roll a new Pilot Road on the back and keep the PP on the front as it has some good life left.

Thats all anyone gets out of Powers, 4-6,000 miles. I have 12,000 on my stock Pilot Roads and purchased a set of Pilot Road 2's that are in the wait. I just want to see how many miles I can get from the original tires. It seems you are doing a lot of highway miles, unless you are doing the track, Powers are a waste. Save your money for important things like taking that smokin hot chick at work out for a drink.

Tell me about it. Believe me, I wanted to ride my bike in a way that would make me need Powers, but that just didn't turn out to be the case. I think I could've gotten 6K or more out of the back if it weren't for the rider-induced flat spot.
JBarx 02-22-2009, 11:30 AM That's weird, I have about 3k on my powers and they're still in great shape. I should get another 3k without even having to look at the wear bars.

I think that is completely achievable. My only advice to ensure that is "avoid tailgating people at 70 mph and assuming they are going to run the yellow light up ahead."
earlytkid 02-23-2009, 11:15 AM I had the same issue on my 06. 7k out of the front and 9k out of the rear on the Pilot Road. Fitted Pilot Road 2 now and we will see how they preform. So far they are great. several of the guys that ride here locally have put some miles on them, most of them ride BMW's that are a lot heavier than the hondas we ride and the wear looks good.
Transient 02-23-2009, 03:22 PM A lot of guys around here recommended the Pilot Powers as holding up very well, depending on aggression. I'll be happy with 6000 miles.
I wanted to go with the Dunlop Roadsmart, but the places locally don't have them in stock and I had to get it done immediately. Ah, the crack addiction that is a motorcycle. :P
egdod 02-23-2009, 04:59 PM i use conti race attack and there really good. gonna try avon vipers next they got rave reviews as they were saying alot of bikes cant get sport tyres up to temp for them to work properly. where the sport tourers out performed the sport tyres as they reached temp better producing more grip.
I'm about to replace my Road 2CT after 10,000miles. I have to ride for a long time to get to the twisties and its center got flat enough to feel uncomfortable when I lean. The front has still thread for a couple thousand miles yet.
