I'm so envious of you people that have dogs. :? I want one soooooo bad, but I'm never home and "home" is too small for an everage size dog anyway... :: sigh :: ... one day.

Super Sneaky Steve 02-20-2007, 07:57 AM Does anyone else find it hard to watch Animal Cops?
I don't think I'm an emotional guy but that show really makes me mad/sad. People are so cruel to those poor animals and those animals still don't complain and they still try to defend their owners.
If I had my way I'd have those people put to death, or worse, treat them like their poor dog and abuse them everyday.

Does anyone else find it hard to watch Animal Cops?
Definately. I like it when they can actually prosecute and put a hurting on someone who would treat an animal that way.
I'll have to find a pic of our dogs and put it up here...i'll come back and edit it in. This place reserved! ;)

Super Sneaky Steve 02-20-2007, 01:05 PM I was going to say that having a poodle is a man card violation but that one does look pretty mean.
pricelister 02-20-2007, 03:23 PM That's what I told my wife. But she took my man card out of her purse, double-checked it, and told me it was OK.
Does anyone else find it hard to watch Animal Cops?
Yes, it makes me sick. I watched about five minutes once, and that was enough for, like, the rest of my life.
I used to really dislike poodles, but now they are growing on me. As long as they don't have that retarded haircut (half shaved, half puffy), poodles are cute.

Super Sneaky Steve 02-21-2007, 07:22 PM That dog is so cute!
Dogs have life all figured out. They don't need anything fancy. They just need someone to love, some food, and a roof over their head. Then they are happy. Even with no arms that dog doesn't pout or be sad.
I want to be like that.

 Holy snake! Very cool man. What's the life expectancy for a snake? Do you get attached? Do they (probably a stupid question)?
MotoGPFan26 02-22-2007, 04:12 PM Kings, very nice. But what is the red one with the white circles?
LOL...which one? There are two sinolaon milks up there, one nelson's milk, and one mountain king crossed with an Arizona king.. I'm thinking you are probably talking about the mountain king/arizona king.
What's the life expectancy for a snake? Do you get attached? Do they (probably a stupid question)?
Life expectancy...should I?...should I? SEARCH (www.google.com)
Ok..In captivity life expectancy is 15-30 years...usually around 20-25 years if well taken care of. Yes, you do get attached. Even my wife is attached. She was very "iffy" about snakes at first, but I told her it was happening whether she liked it or not (this is just before we got married). I was smart enough to establish this BEFORE marriage. She was ok with it...but still a little "iffy." After several months, I think she became much more atached than I did. I've had one get out and get lost. She cried for 2 days over the damn thing getting lost. "what if he's hungry, or scared, or hurt...blah blah blah." It was really funny to watch her. He eventually turned up about a month later, ice cold and lethargic and much smaller than when he got lost. He's doing fine now a year later. Point is, you really do get attached...even though they're "just snakes."
I'd like to think they get attached as well, but the truth is, they don't. they're predatory animals and have only one instinct...FOOD. My finger/hand/ear lobe has become food accidentally a few times. All good though.
Just so you know, cats do not form emotional attachements to their owners either. Cats are at heart, wild. They are predatory, and seek only one thing...FOOD. What humans interpret as "emotional attachment" from cats is nothing more than their way of making sure they are fed. On that note, we're getting a pair of cats after my wife's pregnancy. A pair of Tonkinese kittens. If you aren't aware, they are a cross between Siamese and Burmese, and are now a recognized and official "showable" breed. They have the instinct and "brains" of a Siamese with the "affection" of a Burmese....GREAT cats they are.

That's exactly why I don't like cats. I value loyalty, not sneakiness. This goes for women as well.
vthoky 02-22-2007, 06:24 PM This is Hobie. He's about 14, having been ours for 12 years now. When my wife and I bought our first house, a stray black dog followed her around each evening. I accused him of being a hobo, and that became the source of his name. He was so skinny that his ribs showed a little, and his tail was broken. We adopted him, got him bathed and fixed, and worked him back to good health. He's got a lot more gray on his face now than what shows here, as this pic is five years old.
http://www.vthoky.com/images/HobeDogg.JPG
I could blah-blah-blah for a good while with Hobie stories, but it all comes down to this: he loves me and my wife, hates thunder and being indoors, and puts a fair effort into helping us train our "new" dog, Molly. He's not dog show material, but he's a darned good companion.
tomacana 02-22-2007, 06:30 PM I have to chime again with the Devil's Dictionary and the difference between cats and dogs.
I have one cat and one dog. I'm not a cat hater but I did love the book, A Hundred and One Uses for a Dead Cat True cat lovers hated that book.
DOG, n.
A kind of additional or subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world's worship. This Divine Being in some of his smaller and silkier incarnations takes, in the affection of Woman, the place to which there is no human male aspirant. The Dog is a survival -- an anachronism. He toils not, neither does he spin, yet Solomon in all his glory never lay upon a door-mat all day long, sun-soaked and fly-fed and fat, while his master worked for the means wherewith to purchase the idle wag of the Solomonic tail, seasoned with a look of tolerant recognition.
CAT, n.
A soft, indestructible automaton provided by nature to be kicked when things go wrong in the domestic circle.
This is a dog,
This is a cat.
This is a frog,
This is a rat.
Run, dog, mew, cat.
Jump, frog, gnaw, rat.

vthoky 02-22-2007, 06:42 PM This is Phydeaux. ( R.I.P. 2007)
http://www.vthoky.com/images/Phydeaux.jpg
My wife adopted this fat fella a couple of years before we got married. He hated me every day of his life... mostly. We had a few Hallmark moments, but as is standard Siamese practice, he was a one-owner cat. And that owner was not me.
He passed last month, just after the wife's grandfather died. A crushing blow for her.
Phydeaux had a habit of nibbling on my wife's arm occasionally, a little pinch-and-pull maneuver. If you get into the spritual / supernatural / things-we-can't-explain goods, I'll offer this: two days after Phydeaux's death, Hobie walked up to my wife and nibbled her arm.
vthoky 02-22-2007, 07:00 PM And this is our new arrival, Molly (and Hobie, and the less ugly part of me), at five months old.
http://www.vthoky.com/images/Molly1.jpg
She was my wife's aunt's dog. At four months, she was 50 pounds and far too much for Aunt Mae to handle -- Mae's a tiny woman, and Molly could easily knock her over. So Molly came to our house. What a handful! She's got so much energy and enthusiasm. Having her here seems to have put new life into Hobie, as he's much more active now.
Poor Spike, our average ordinary domestic black cat, is out of luck here -- I've got no pictures of her. She is what a cat ought to be, though -- quiet, independent, and very little trouble.

Our third greyhound Andy from a rescue in Canada. He was terribly abused, a wreck when we adopted him. 20lbs underweight, covered in sores, kennel-burn, gum disease, worms. When we got him you couldn't raise your hand past your waste or he would think you were going to hit him and sometimes he would piss himself he was so scared. Glad to say he's come a long way and he's an excellent dog:

DarkTint 03-07-2007, 03:33 PM Greyhounds have always fascinated me. How is their general behavior? I know a lot depends on training, but are they typically hyper or calm? Aggressive? How are they with kids? And how do they adapt to life in a home after working at a track?
Also, when you get them from a track, are they fairly cheap to pick up or are they expensive?
I have friends who are involved in Greyhound rescue. They say there is always an abundance of ex-racing dogs that need good homes. I believe the cost of adopting a Greyhound is nominal. Rescue organizations are active all over the country, even in areas without dog tracks.
My friends (who have 7 pet Greyhounds in addition to many others they foster) say that Greyhounds are gentle, sensitive dogs. They are not hyper. Couch potato would be more like it. They are sprinters -- they run fast but they don't run all the time. My own limited experience with the breed confirms this.
I'm not an animal rights activist (I hunt and fish) but I'm opposed to Greyhound racing because the dogs are treated like commodities. They are kept in poor conditions and many of them are "put down" after a very brief racing career. I've been to the dog track a few times but I was not so well informed then. I won't go back.

Slide 03-08-2007, 07:57 AM Greyhounds have always fascinated me. How is their general behavior?
Hey, I have 4... that says it all! My wife and I like these dogs very much. They are excellent house dogs because they are very relaxed and they dig chillin' most of the time. People think they must be crazy energetic because they are so damn fast... not so. They like to give 'er but only in short spurts. When they race it's only for about 30-40 sec. depending on the track. Generally, they tend to be pretty sensitive and gentle animals.
They can't be left of leash unless you're in a fenced off area because they have high prey-drives so their recall isn't the best. They don't care if a rabbit or squirrel is crossing an 8 lane highway, they go.
They also aren't really outside dogs. They have a very thin coat and no undercoat as well as having no fat on their bodies. This is a good thing inside as they don't shed much and they have very little dander so allergies aren't an issue.
I know a lot depends on training, but are they typically hyper or calm? Aggressive? How are they with kids?
Typically they are calm dogs. And aggressive they are not, but as with any animals and people for that matter, there are exceptions. Generally, only if the greyhound is abused will it end up being scared sh**less of people or aggressive towards them.
We don't have kids but our lad Carrier was in a home before he was returned to the track and adopted him, and they had a little girl. The two were good pals and to this day whenever kids are over he loves it. Our other 3 had never seen 'little people' before so they are cautious but familiarity, I am certain, would remedy that.
And how do they adapt to life in a home after working at a track?
It takes some time and patience but after a while it just clicks. That's a good question because a lot of people just expect a greyhound to magically become a pet/companion animal. They spend the first 18 months on a greyhound farm with their siblings and mom which is pretty cool, actually. So the mum does most of the basic training like, no biting, respecting authority, basic behaviour... no kidding. Through this I learned that people who get puppies that are 6 weeks or so are taking on more than they have to, if they left the pups with the mum longer behaviour issues would be minimal. Sorry I digress!
They have never been companion animals so they don't know what to think of people. At the track they are just 'handled'... no affection or any sort of relationship with people, so this takes some time for them to discover. Also... stairs. They have never had to climb them so they need to be taught. It's just a case of placing their feet for them and giving them some encouragement. All in all, it just takes some time but it is very rewarding as you get to witness them learning to be a dog!
Funny, they instinctively know what couches are, as well... buggers!
[quote]Also, when you get them from a track, are they fairly cheap to pick up or are they expensive?[quote]
You're best off locating a rescue group. They usually just charge for any of the medical and spay/neutering. We paid between $200-$300. My wife has a lot of contacts, so PM me and I can help, if you're interested. Some tracks have adoption operations right at the track, like the one in Wichita were we got Carrier.
Man, this post turned out long! If you or anyone else has any questions, lemme know! Hope that helps.

This is Rocco. We just adopted him from the husky rescue league. It took some persuading, but my wife finally agreed after I borrowed him for a day and brought him home to meet the family! We actually can't have a dog in our apartment, but my wife's mom owns a kennel, where my wife also works. He will be staying there until our house is built, but my wife and kids play with him during the day, and I go by every day and take him for walks, etc. I can also bring him to my parents house on the weekends, where he terrorizes the cats. http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/1029/rocco2ba8.jpg

Thank you for your time with us, and for teaching Molly all that you could before you had to go.
Super Sneaky Steve 07-10-2007, 07:44 PM Oh man, I know I'm going to act like a big wuss when my dog dies. I'm sorry for your loss vthoky.
My dog would give his life for me without a second thought. That makes him pretty special.
vthoky 07-10-2007, 07:59 PM Thanks for the thoughts, Steve. And, yep, you will act like a big wuss. I thought I was ready for it... and I bawled like a big baby that night. It's been two weeks now, and it's still hella tough to deal with. :(
Your statement reminds me of what another friend said to me: "our dogs would gladly lay down their lives for us, and ask only for a meal, a bed, and a pat on the head in return."
Our dogs (and other pets) teach us love, humility, loyalty, and respect. And sometimes we don't even know how much they've done for us until they're gone.
sseche 07-10-2007, 08:33 PM Condolences to Hobie. I've lost 2 dogs in the last 6 years (Celie 15 years, Henry 6 years_cancer). It's rough, but we always go back and get another dog.
Slide..you have the 411 on the greyhounds. My grey Dave took awhile to learn what being a house dog meant. We adopted a trainer dog Suzey to teach him the ropes. He learned fast and his personality has bloomed nicely. Still can't get him off the couch.

sseche.... Our first grey was like WTF when we brought her home. No idea what anything was and what to do. We even had to teach her stairs. It took about a year for it to sink in that this was home. The others after that have been easy as Baily (the first) taught them everything... helps she's alpha too! So good idea with the training dog! And ya... they are couch magnets!
vthoky 07-11-2007, 05:03 PM Thanks for the thoughts, Slide. What more can I say -- it's a terribly difficult thing to deal with, particularly given Hobie's peculiarities (we learned to deal with a number of new things) and that he was with us for so long.
Interesting point made about "training dogs." Last fall, we adopted the wife's aunt's puppy (4-month Labrador), and realized what a handful she was going to be. Everyone tells us that she'll still be in puppy mode until she's about two years. (Yikes!) Anyway, it seemed like a good thing that we got her while Hobie was still with us -- it seemed to perk him up a good bit, and we hoped that she'd take on some of his better mannerisms.
To a great extent, I believe she did -- she knows to be quiet most of the time, and usually only barks when something is amiss. When we'd work on the fetch routine, if she would not give up the ball quickly enough Hobie would poke her with his nose. It was like he was actually teaching her the way we expected her to behave.
In the last weeks of Hobie's life, we saw a shift (though it was much more evident immediately after Hobie's passing) in the roles -- instead of him looking out for her, she was watching out for him. One particular day, the mother-in-law was here alone and Molly ran back and forth between her and Hobie. We see now that she was trying to tell Mama that something was up. On Hobie's last day, the wife saw the same thing -- Molly was trying to get the wife's attention, evidently to let her know that Hobie was not well.
And just a week before Hobie died, Molly seemed to take on the "watchdog" role, alerting my wife that some of her friends had shown up outside.
It's all easier to see in the hindsight, but now that I can look back on it with clearer eyes (and mind) it's far easier to see the shift in roles. Fascinating.
And all Molly wants right now is to go for a walk, have a meal, and get a good rub on the head. No big production, just work and reward. Can a creature be any more honest and pure?

yeroC 07-12-2007, 05:52 AM Wow! I really feel your pain vt... Our dogs are without a doubt part
of the family. I'm sure I'll turn into a straight bitch when/if something
happens to 'em. I grew up with dogs but my wife didn't and for the
first 8 years of marriage she was against having a dog. Eventually she
came around and our first dog was/is Cleo the boston terrier/terrorist.
Two years later we got Bubba the black pug. Funny thing is now my
wife gives more love to the dogs than to me!!! She loves them
to death. Just goes to show how important pets are and how they can
enrich a person/family.
Peace out Hobie!!
Keep ya head up, vt!!!
Slide 07-12-2007, 08:44 AM vthoky... heart-breaking yet awesome story. Dogs are pretty amazing. People who think they know dogs or think they're simple or "stupid" animals have got it all wrong. You can learn a lot from them and discover that they are pretty complex and emotional creatures.
Even though Hobie is gone, sounds like you have some good memories!

So true. It is always the people that don't have dogs that see them as anything less than family.
My family was scared of Mo at first, because of the bad press about bully breeds. Mo one them over by consistently outshining their temperamental snappy golden retrievers. Now even they consider him family and he gets more Christmas presents than my girlfriend or me. Our dog is truly a member of our family and will be sorely missed when it is his time.
Condolences for your loss vthoky.
vthoky 07-12-2007, 06:06 PM To Slide, yeroC, drew, sseche, Steve, cannon, and so many others: Thank you so much for the thoughts and kind words.
Right now I'm torn: On the one hand I feel like I've hijacked the thread, and for that I must apologize. On the other hand, I'm completely moved by the support from you guys and I appreciate that more than I can express to you. And on the third hand (What :?:  ) I'm feeling both sad that Hobie's gone and relieved that he passed peacefully.
yeroC: I have a bit of your situation, but with cats. I didn't grow up with cats, but my wife did. Her Siamese (whom she'd had longer than we've been married) passed in January. She brought home a new kitten a month ago. I was fully against having another one, and I spoke my mind about it. A month later, and I really do like the little stinker. (The hard part: admitting to it in front of the wife. I have to keep up the I-don't-like-Oliver front, and it's getting tougher to do.)
Slide: thanks for pointing out the fact that I've got a bunch of good memories. I've tried writing a batch of 'em out. Too tough to do right now, but it's fun to think about the good times. And even some of the tough ones.
Cannon: Though I've often tried not to be one of those people who refers to their pets as their "babies," it's easy -- natural, I think -- to regard them as part of the family. Molly, Oliver, and Spike are certainly each a part of the family, and anyone would play hell trying to convince my wife otherwise. Our pets do become family members. We make sure they have food, water, shelter, a soft bed, and some loving attention. Whom other than family do we treat that way?
Thanks again, everyone. This loss is tougher than I ever thought it would be, and it's always comforting to receive kind wishes from friends like y'all.
DarkTint 12-23-2007, 12:19 PM A couple weeks ago my wife and I got a new dog. He's a 3 year old Beagle and Miniature Pincher mix we found and the APA. They named him Starbuck because he was a stray who was found at a Starbucks coffee shop. We renamed him Jack. He's the PERFECT dog when we're home. Very layed back, loyal, and doesn't bark unless he hears something suspicious. But he suffers from separation anxiety when we're not home and poops in the house and occasionally tears stuff up (the worst was a big hole in the middle of our mattress), so unfortunately we have to keep him in a pet carrier when he's home alone with the cats.

Jenerator 12-23-2007, 01:57 PM First of all, my condolences to vthoky...when pets are true members of your family, it sure does hurt when they pass on. We lost our Bella in April of '07 (she's the orange tabby below) because she had a tumor on her liver and there was little chance of a successful operation so we had her put down. She was only 8. Being the one to make that call was the worse feeling ever.

I'm a bit drunk here... she used to live with me, but she's at my parents' house, now, because my new house mate has a Pit Bull puppy and a 1.5-year-old Beagle and I don't think she'd want to deal with their hyperactive stuff...

vthoky 12-24-2007, 06:22 AM First of all, my condolences to vthoky...when pets are true members of your family, it sure does hurt when they pass on. Thanks for thinking of me, Jen. I had a bit of a tough time with Hobie's passing this past Thanksgiving. He seemed to know when the holidays were around and special meals were being prepared. Tomorrow will be a bit tough, too.
Mrs Vthoky has finally realized that Oliver did not "replace" Phydeaux, and that there's no need to compare one to the other or feel guilty about loving Oliver as she did Phydeaux. And I know that Molly is no replacement for Hobie, but simply a continuation of the opportunity to share a bond with a dog, and to make a good home for a [any] pet. Surely no parent loves the first kid any different or less when the second one arrives... this has to be similar.
JHenley: Brette is a beautiful dog! Kudos to you on taking her from the pound. We've often thought that pound dogs/stray dogs make the best ones, because they seem to really appreciate having a new home. Strays (likek Hobie) adopt their people, not the other way around. And I think the same goes for pound pups.
Merry Christmas, all!

JHenley17 12-27-2007, 08:10 PM hahaha... the Chiweenie has to be one of the funniest-looking mixes ever. Not that that's a bad thing, I love it. I want a toy rat terrier, which has a face similar to that...
Can't see the pic of the aquarium... if it's salt, I'm jealous. I tried to start one last year, but it got overwhelmingly expensive before I could even get fish in it. Just the rocks cost me $120 and I still had alot of stuff I needed to set up. Fresh, I'm still jealous. I want to set up another fresh water tank, but I'm behind on too much right now.
Thanks, hokie. Brette's been a very loving dog, just a little too loving at times. And she digs and chews like there's no tomorrow. But she's good, great with kids. She'll lay on the floor and just let the babies pull on her and hit her if they want to and not care...

She's fixed. :( She had a very bad time with that- hack of a vet nearly killed her. I'd have loved to seen how pretty her puppies would have been, but she has hip dysplasia and we didn't want to perpetuate that down the line. I just watched that movie last week! Very cute movie! I liked it up until the part where Marley is having a hard time walking into the house. At that point it turns into a tear jerker... I actually turned it off at that point and said "that's enough for tonight" and then went to bed. Of course, I had to finish it the next day.
I was the same way with my first two ferrets when I still lived with my parents. I let them take care of that kind of stuff. Now that I've been in my own place for almost 6 years, I've had to deal with a dog, and a ferret passing away... probably another ferret before too long... not fun! :(
