View Full Version : To Wave Or Not To Wave
hondagirl 03-02-2007, 09:37 AM I really have a problem with this subject. On the one hand I don't want to take my hand off the grip to wave, but I don't want to look like a snot either. Sometimes I feel those Harley-guys are looking down on us 'Metrics" when they don't wave.
tamu8993 03-02-2007, 09:45 AM I wave when it is possible. Sometimes it isn't possible due to traffic, road condition, turning, clutching, etc....
beef706 03-02-2007, 09:47 AM I almost always wave, the winter weather has put a caveat on things though, sometimes I don't wanna take my hands off the heated grips and it can be a little hard to get back in the Hippo Hands  . But if I see another rider and I can take my hand off the bar (cluthch isn't in ) I wave. If I can't, I nod. I've got to where I don't even care if they wave back all that much :D

That's a healthy attitude. Got to examine why you do things...if it is because it is the right thing to do or it makes you feel good, UR on the right track. If it is go get praise, ya may wanna examine that...
Ahhh, the good old days...

Hondagirl,
Don't worry about waving for now. Nod when you can. When you'll get more used to the bike and get more comfortable with riding in general, taking your hand off the grip and waving to another rider will not feel scary or dangerous. Of course, there are always times when your first priority is to pay attention to the conditions on the road...
Super Sneaky Steve 03-02-2007, 11:29 AM I used to do a salute, but it was brought to my attention that using your left hand is disrespectful. So now I get the heavy metal satan horns.
Or if it's a HD guy I do a really gay wave to piss them off more. For some weird reason it feels good to be loathed.
mechanic77 03-02-2007, 11:38 AM wave when possible sometimes I even wave one finger

I do the low wave to everyone on a bike, even scooters if they don't do a wave or a nod back i don't mind. It doesn't ruin my day when everyone i waved to or nodded to ignores me, it makes me feel good so i do it simple as that.

Steve, you are fooling no one... :hump
DarkTint 03-02-2007, 12:05 PM  LOL Great video. I love bicycle bell he has on his bike.
I tend to do a casual low wave to most sport bikes, but if I can tell it's a nice bike I'll do the ol' "point and nod" to let him (or her, of course) know that I approve of their ride.
Harley riders tend to piss me off. I don't even acknowledge them any more unless they wave first. Then I *might* wave back. SSS has a great idea though about doing some sort of gay wave to them. That would be funny as hell.....I'm thinking some sort of Queen Elizabeth variation....
Goldwing riders get the most respect from me. Those riders are typically older guys who would be riding sport bikes but their bodies can't take the punishment any more. I've talked with many who have said "If we had bikes like yours in my younger days I would have had one!"
Pepper 03-02-2007, 12:46 PM I'm a low waver, or a nodder if my hand is busy. If people don't wave back, I'm ok with that. I'm just so happy to be out and about on my bike that waving helps share the joy.

I think the BMW guys are the most hard assed. It seems like they always ride, wind, rain or snow. Now maybe it's because their bikes come with electric everything. Doesn't the new GS come with a toaster? :?

Yeah, a heated seat (a bun toaster) I crack myself up.
yeroC 03-02-2007, 02:56 PM I'm trying to incorporate the Saddam Hussein wave which is way more
hardcore than the Queen E wave. It's 1/4 acknowledgement, 1/4
dismissal, and 1/2 i will crush you and your family for fun!!!!

thought mordeth13 was kick off youtube??? did he get his account back?
wave when you can if not then nod if you can....many times when on a road with lots of bikes I don't wave at all, there is just too many folks like on skyline
theO.Z. 03-02-2007, 05:57 PM I always wave if I can, and like dabinche said, I nod if I can't wave. I have historically gotten little respect, coming from the scooter segment with waves but I still do it, because it's a good will thing.
on my vespa, I get tons of waves when I'm on the highway. actually, some guy on a BMW saw me riding at 75mph and did the most dangerously excited wave I'd ever seen (he was riding next to me and I was passing him).
I get waves in the city on my hornet. good times.
djamalt 03-02-2007, 10:26 PM thought mordeth13 was kick off youtube??? did he get his account back?
He didn't. Some of his fans have ripped his videos (way back when) and reposted them on their own accounts on youtube. He moved over to livevideo.com but apparently didn't save most of his videos so his new "home" is pretty empty. :(
As for waving... it's like Mars and Almond Joy. Damn, does that officially make me old?
vthoky 03-03-2007, 05:43 AM I was talking with my GPZ1200 -riding friend just after getting my 599. He said bikes like ours are in a different "class, if you will" and the reactions we get from others will vary. The sportbike guys don't fully accept us, but they are far more likely to offer a wave than the H-D fellas. Gary pointed out that BMW riders are probably the most likely to offer a wave. I began to think about his observations as I rode, and sure enough he was right. I'll offer a wave (when feasible) to most, though the H-D fellas usually ignore me. There's an H-D chick I see out occasionally, and she's the most pleasant of the bunch. Off-topic: this gal probably weighs about 90 pounds, and she runs a fully dressed Electra Glide. Wow.
Anyway. when it's feasible I'll offer one, even if it's just a couple of fingers raised off the bar. But if there are more important things to do (like steer the bike) then the nod seems fully acceptable.
sephia 03-03-2007, 08:54 AM i try to wave, if not just nod. makes me feel good to throw a wave and get one back!
dracflamloc 03-03-2007, 07:49 PM I usually wave, usually i get one back or at least a nod unless its a h-d rider of course.
Mainly I do it because I think its neat to have that 'secret club feeling'
goWVU 03-04-2007, 05:52 PM I try to wave to most people (unless my first couple of attempts that day go unreturned) but I never bother with packs of Harley's. I'd have better luck getting a reply from Jesus. Sport bikes are pretty consistent here in Delaware though.

I'm just starting out on the street and don't want to take my hands off the grip. Some Harley guys don't even wave, while other street/sport bikes do!

jfeagin 03-04-2007, 09:02 PM I always wave if I can. Nod if I can't. Only the Hell's Angels wannabes don't wave back around here. As the sticker says, "H-D riders are a dime a dozen. Real bikers are a breed apart."
The coolest riders I ever ran into (not literally):
1. Guy who got excited reminiscing about his Nighthawk 250 when he saw mine (we were in a parking lot). Not too many people like the small bikes.
2. 18y.o. kid with a Ducati ($$$!!!) who stopped once when I was having fuel system troubles. Not much help, but he tried.
3. Guy I saw on the interstate with a bum left leg. He'd rigged up his own automatic tranny, since he couldn't shift. Bike was an old H-D, though not as old as he was.
Flipper 03-04-2007, 11:11 PM I wave at all bikes and scooters without any expectations.
It makes me feel good. And even if they don't respond, I know it made them feel good too.
If I can't take my hand off the grip at that moment
I give the "chin up head thing."
tomacana 03-05-2007, 05:36 PM I wave all the time except
1. Checking rear view, left and right, etc and realize I just passed someome.
2. In a curve, and hands on the grip (Try to nod at times like this)
3. Wife maybe chatting (If we're on the cruiser)
4. Sometimes daydreaming
5. Those times I just passed a million bikes
So if you encounter me in this events, it's not personal.
I like to be aware of the traffic (coming and going) especially any that I could intersect with, so those times that I don't see fellow riders is an opportunity to watch traffic better and give the fellow riders a wave and a nod.
rndthought 03-06-2007, 07:29 AM ...So if you encounter me in this events, it's not personal...
Tom, I like this. People do have a tendency (on occasion me self too) to make what happens out on the road personal.
All the same, if and when I make it up there and you see ME, you better wave back!!! That will be personal!
tomacana 03-06-2007, 07:12 PM :? If and When? I thought the transfer orders were processed and a spring ride was scheduled. Are you waiting for JLO to adopt you?
rndthought 03-07-2007, 08:50 AM Tom, the reform school disavows any knowledge of my rehabilitation... The exact response was "Lance who? AHGGGGGGG <disconnect>" No paperwork to forward :( So will need a Plan-B!
