Is there anyone here from Texas (specifically, Austin, San Antonio area)? I used to have a group that rode often around here (Del Rio). However, it seems I am the only one in town that wants to hit the Hill Country anymore.

Thanks.

Yo! I'm originally from the San Antonio area and now reside in Ft. Worth. Wanting to do the Wild Flower Ride this year (April/May). Thinking about scheduling a ride down to throught the Hill Country sometime soon. http://www.foxfirecabins.com/. I will probably meet up w/ some Ducati buddies from Austin.

If anyone is interested in make a trip like that, then we should try to get a group together and plan something.

Not sure. I know it is mildly hilly and there are lakes and such. It is the more wooded part of the state so it should be scenic.

I've got a friend running in a Mini GP race this weekend in Denton; was thinking about checking that out.

DFW fellas, we ought to get together one of these days. Transient, I think you're just a mile or two from me.

OK sounds nice, but if I get out this weekend, it'll just be for a bit. Have fun, ride safe.

Texas Pride baby!

I'm wondering how many of you D/FW guys commute on Dallas highways. That sounds crazy intense to me. Every time I have had to deal with rush hour there, it has been a nightmare. That's why I like Austin- smaller than Dallas, but still a sizable city.

Timing is key. I make a point of getting to work by 6:30 a.m. It's probably not much safer in the grand scheme of things, but I don't have to use the clutch until I get off the freeway.

The ride home's sucky no matter how you look at it; I think rush hour starts at 4:00 now. :?

I try to avoid the major congested areas, where the world is rich with 4-lanes-at-a-time-so-I-can-get-to-the-exit lane changes. I'll much more gladly find a scenic route at that point.

When I got my first 599 it was from the contemporary president of the TSBA. I think she's moved on to a Ducati group now. I went to a GooseBucks (well the Starbucks portion) and they were pretty welcoming. I keep meaning to go to one of their Tuesday meets (GooseBucks) but always forget.

I am not certain I am ready for a group ride just yet but I want to meet some more riders that just get it. At work it is a Harley dominated place with no one knowing what my bike is until I tell them to google it. Heck one of them didn't know about Ducati or Buell as companies at all.

This is kind of the problem here, too. Lots of riders at work, but I have two choices: the Harleys who ride for show or sportbike riders who ride like idiots. Neither are great riding partners. Tried to roll with one of the sportbike guys and nearly got rear-ended for the first time because of how aggressively he wanted to pace the ride. That ended that for me.

Out of 90 people, I think only two others here have bikes. One has a CB1000 and could ride to work, but claims to be "needing a part" (he's said that for years). The other has a Triumph of some sort but probably wouldn't ride it because it would muss up his hair and wrinkle his tie.

So, I'm left as the "weirdo" who has the funny fiberglass hat. And I do get looks, but as I tear up the road going home, I could care less... 8)

Haha. There are about 8-12 overall riders here out of... say 300 people or so. At least from the bikes I've counted here. Even amongst those, I'm still the weirdo who's always wearing jacket, gauntlet-style gloves, helmet and boots. The Harley guys don't think they need it and the sportbike guys are too cool. Yeeeehaw!

EgoThreat
06-11-2008, 08:30 PM
Yep, not too many 'happy go lucky' sport bike riders where I work either. On "ride to work day" last year there were about 35 bikes... one BMW, my 599, an F4i, a couple of Honda or Suzuki Cruisers and about 30 Harleys. I tried to make a joke in fun about Harley reliability with a guy I work with (they should all have a sense of humor about Harley's past reliability) and I promptly got a 1/2 hour lecture about how they weren't that way anymore... blah, blah, blah... waaaay oversensitive. Claims to like all bikes but doesn't know anything about bikes other than Harleys. Sigh.

The beau and I met up with the TWTexans group for a ride last year, we were running about 15 minutes late (bad planning) and a couple of guys waited for us so we wouldn't get left behind. They largely had sport tourers that day, but weren't bike snobs at all. The ride was a nice pace, not crazy fast, not super slow. Enjoyable pace, and I had only about 200 miles under my seat at that time.

If you've gotten a cold reception on the board, I guess it doesn't surprise me. I've been involved with a few different boards and car clubs, seems there are always some folks who think you aren't in, but often in person there are some cool folks out there.

Thanks for the info on the TSBA crew, sounds like they would also be cool to meet up with!

So when are we all meeting up for a 599 dinner... all what... 4 of us or so :D

Long story short: he has a ton of contacts, so he can get special access to the local tracks and just knows a lot of riding groups and great places to ride around here. Took like an hour of our days just blabbing about stuff.

Me neither. Add to that the fact that I'm new enough to just enjoy being on my bike, period. We could superslab it somewhere for lunch and back again for all I care.

All I know is I can go about 140 miles on a tank, and it seems silly to have to get gas in the middle of a ride. Doesn't mean I won't do it; but a tankful including travel to/from seems like a decent cutoff.

That stretch of 377 is really just super slab. Last time I checked in the garage I didn't ride a Goldwing or UltraGlide. :)

That bit of 455 is ok, it actually has decent pavement, but there is some construction on a bridge that limits it to one lane. There is a stop light at each end that cycles every few minutes. That's ok in a car, but just baking time on a bike.

I mapped out this route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=S+I-35+%4033.005610,+-96.970870&daddr=FM-2123+%4033.060550,+-97.744300+to:FM-2123+%4033.165260,+-97.763290+to:FM-2123+%4033.134090,+-97.763520+to:FM-2264+%4033.165126,+-97.438302+to:33.008663,-96.959839&hl=en&geocode=3140453723133847156,33.005610,-96.970870%3B17485398544967231800,33.060550,-97.744300%3B256540478202788596,33.165260,-97.763290%3B4872739430954833830,33.134090,-97.763520%3B10115872583549429373,33.165126,-97.438302%3B&mra=mi&mrcr=2&mrsp=5&sz=10&via=1,2&dirflg=h&sll=33.098445,-97.323761&sspn=0.778847,0.904999&ie=UTF8&z=10). It goes west and iomud could meet at 377. I haven't been on these roads and yes they are FM roads. For relaxation I prefer the FM roads actually, unless I get behind traffic. This route can be done on one tank so Carlitos doesn't have to face the dreaded gas pump.

I have ridden 1204 and it is a nice ride, short but nice. I was trying to get to 703 but didn't realize that there is a stretch of dirt road I'd have to ride. So that is another caveat with that one. If we like, we could just ride 455 east instead of heading back. The stretch sould of the lake is nice. But this being the last boating weekend it may be busy.

I've noticed the roads to the north of DFW are all straightish. Out east, west and south they get interesting. I have been looking out that way and that Glenrose area looks tasty.

Not being an Oklahoma-phobe, for a weekend ride I'd love to try State Road 2 and the Talihina area.

So where should we meet up? Vista Ridge Mall seems like a good spot, or that Sonic in the shopping center on the corner of MacArthur and 3040?

Early say, 9 or 10AM? Just throwing times out if anyone objects it's no problem for me.

So cut me some slack. When we have time to plan, I'll ride to Alaska with ya'll and plant the Texas flag - just not Monday.

If it's windy you may get tired of getting pushed around a bit but just tuck for a while. You'll be fine. It's a comfortable bike for trips like that. Next time I head down that way I will shoot you a post and we can hook ip for a ride.
