View Full Version : How do you remember to turn your turn signal off?

This is kinda embarrassing to admit, at least for me, 'cause I've been riding over 10 years. However, often I find myself riding down a perfectly straight stretch of road, look slightly down and notice my blinker is on. Yea, it's been on since I turned a quarter mile back! Since I often make fun of others (mostly while driving my car) for this lack of attention to their driving, I feel ridiculous. However, it's really a safety issue. 'Cause, if my blinker's on, a car might pull out, and while I'm wondering, "what the f**&'s he doing", I look down to notice my signal is on. Doh'!
What do you do to remember to disengage the blinker after a turn?

Everyone does that sometimes. I just hit the button compulsively. Even when my blinker is off, just to be sure.

Yea, I just started riding again after a few year lay off, so perhaps I'll develop a compulsive "turn off the blinker" behavior as well. I don't remember being so bad about it last I had a bike.

I kind of make it part of my every 2 min or so check. Quick check in the mirrors, then the spedo and turn signal indicator.

I have the same problem. I don't worry about. I just try to remember to cut it off, and when I don't remember...oh well...

it will become natural to turn it off after you keep riding for a while.....it becomes part of ur routine just like checking before changing lanes

I think I've seen a black-box gadget in one of the catalogs that will do the signal-canceling thing for you. I'll keep an eye out for it.

My dad's last bike, an 84 Honda Magna, had blinkers that turned themselves off after turning, similar to a car's system. Pretty trick idea for a bike, but definately took some getting used. I still found myself hitting the cancel button to ensure it was off. I'm not sure why more bikes don't have it. Weight savings? Cost savings?

You can get an aftermarket auto-cancel unit from Kriss.com (http://www.kriss.com/tscancel.htm). They sell for $100 direct from the factory. Don't know how good it is, but they advertise the unit not turning off your blinker waiting at a stop. It's pretty small, so should fit any bike. Personally, I'm just compulsive about checking my blinker after making a turn so it isn't a problem. But if anyone has a good experience with an aftermarket unit, I'd love to know about it.

Edit: Just found this on the Kriss web site. Kinda rains on the whole parade.
The Honda motorcycle turn signal switch is a manual switch so there's not any way to physically reset the switch without depressing it with your thumb. There's not any type of cancellation unit made that is able to push the button. The switch has two sets of double contacts with each set making and breaking for a particular side when the switch is moved. One contact pair closes and allows the turn signal circuit to feed the selected light. The other contact pair for that light opens and turns off the same side front running light filament (dual filament bulbs on the Honda). The running light will not come back on until the switch physically returns to signal off position. This circumstance applies only to the front signals since the rear do not contain dual filament bulbs.

Mirrors. Every time I check my mirrors, I check the signal indicator. Just got in the habit and it's very rare for me to forget to cancel a signal.

Try leaving your thumb on the button after turning it on, unless it disrupts your turning. All military vehicles' turn signals have to be cancelled manually, so it's a habit for me.

That's funny-'cause that's a technique I've been trying out.
I guess great minds think alike.

I always turn off my signal...when I get to my destination and park. Seriously I think it takes a while for new riders to develop the habit. I am definitely getting better about remembering, but I still forget sometimes.

I don't know anything much about military vehicles, but I can say that a lot of older pickup trucks, such as the '52 Chevy I once owned, had to be cancelled manually. If you ever drive one vehicle like that, any others are easy.

That bright orange blinking light on the instrument cluster works for me.

And like that other guy said, I've driven many a vehicle without auto-canceling turn signals

...the instrument cluster...
Maybe that explains all the speeding tickets...
