The kickstand on my 599 gets gummed up pretty quickly. What do you guys do to keep it clean? I soak it down with WD-40 sometimes but it still gums up within a couple weeks.

View Full Version : Kickstand is gummed up Skier 04-19-2007, 09:52 PM The kickstand on my 599 gets gummed up pretty quickly. What do you guys do to keep it clean? I soak it down with WD-40 sometimes but it still gums up within a couple weeks. mechanic77 04-19-2007, 11:34 PM I do the same just wipe it down with wd once inna while ..... helps to use a chain lube that is anti sling too .... you know so it doesnt cover the sidestand with more gunk  Sachi 04-20-2007, 07:49 AM Keep in mind that WD-40 is NOT a lubricant. It's a "water displacement" compound that's designed, as the name indicates, to force water out of places where it does not belong. Although it has a bit of lubricating ability when it is first applied, it quickly dries up and no longer lubricates. So, if you need to lubricate the pivot pin of the sidestand, use something else. mechanic77 04-20-2007, 10:37 AM correcto mate and you cant beat it for breaking up that gumm on the kickstand...... wd also deteriorates rubber hence why you dont wanna use it to lube ur chain :thumbsup Skier 04-20-2007, 05:42 PM correcto mate and you cant beat it for breaking up that gumm on the kickstand...... wd also deteriorates rubber hence why you dont wanna use it to lube ur chain :thumbsup Exactly. I was using it for the cleaning properties, not the lubricating properties. I'm pretty sure a vast majority of the gunk is from me being too spray-happy with the chain lube, but it's so hard not to do that. yeroC 04-23-2007, 05:16 AM A little silicone or white lithium should do well. Works for me. Sev 04-23-2007, 07:39 AM I took some kerosine to it a while back. Then my whole bike was black. After I got it repainted it looked (and worked) pretty good... snowy 04-27-2007, 12:11 PM my kick stand is really hard to get down when i come to a stop...like REALLY hard and i was wondering how it comes apart and what part i should lube cause its getting really bad Sev 04-27-2007, 07:50 PM Throw it on a paddock stand then start spraying WD40 into it and working it back and forth. Take a soft bristled brush (brass or plastic) and start rubbing in there. | |
