There has been some mention of a group ride between several of us. Let's see who is really interested and come up with a date and destination.

Any sunny Saturday or Sunday.(and I'm off work from June 9-17, so anywhere in there as well.)I was out for a blast on some of the backroads north of Cobourg on Sat.-brrr. What kind of roads/riding do you like, T?

I am a pretty conservative rider, relatively speaking -- I fear speeding tickets and high(er) insurance rates!!

I am open to any sort, but certainly like the twisties. A couple of buddies and I usually head north to the Parry Sound area where there are some wonderful roads and great scenery (check out the map posted in the other Ontario link).

Note to others posting -- unless stated in your profile, let us know where home is.

I'm in. I live west of Hamilton in Paris... about an hour from TO. I usually head north or northeast for roads... I think my favorite roads in Ontario (so far) are the 500 series roads which span the Haliburton, Peterborough, Kawarthas regions.

I am pretty busy until June but then things are looking good (I'm fencing our property... an acre... ugh). I have vacation booked for June 16-24 but this can be moved a week before or after if a longer ride is in the works....

I've heard the roads around Parry Sound are great fun, but a little to far from me for a day ride. I'd need a weekend to enjoy it (maybe when the Sportbike Rally is in town?)
How far east is too far for you? There are some awsome 500 series roads north of the Belleville/Napanee area. One of my favorites is the Flinton Rd. 506 509 run(a modified version of the "ompah stomp" on the map). That whole area is packed with great roads. Alternately, (and closer to T.O.) the back roads north of Port Hope, Cobourg, and Colborne are fun too, but nowhere near as twisty. I see that most of the 599 riders in southern ontario are in the GTA, with some in the Ottawa area as well.
If you (or any other 599 riders) want to get togther for a weekend of great riding, I'd be happy to use my place as a base. I live in the country south of Belleville, and there's room for lots of bikes in my garage.

Hey, Slide, this is getting interesting...

Say the word... too east for a day ride would be anything past your place. It takes me roughly 1 1/2 hours to get from Paris to the end of the 407 if I am giving 'er. A weekend is another story all together!

I'm in. My folks have a place in Frankford, so if timing gets tight I have a back-up plan.

599001
05-15-2007, 05:58 PM
Small world! I'm 20 mins from Frankford, and often deliver in that area.(I work for UPS). There are 5 or 6 other 599 owners in my area--I could probably round up a couple of them as well.

So.. it sounds like a weekend of riding might be in order...when?
Again, I'm on holidays from June 9-17.

I'm in Burlington. If I had a little more experience I'd be out there for sure with you guys. Soon.

I have to check out some of these 500 series highways that I keep hearing about.

Experience is gained by riding. You are most welcome to come along, in fact you should. We'll have a great time!

We should select a primary and secondary weekend should the weather not cooperate. I'm pretty sure that the weekends in June are open for me except the 23rd.

I could meet you on the way if that would help?

I'm in except for the 23/24... it's my wife's birthday. Although I could possile do the 23rd during the day but the 8/9 or 15/16 weekend would be ideal.

How does the 9th work for everyone? I know that there has been some talk about vacations, so I'm not sure if that means that the 9th is a working day for some.

For now, pencil in the 9th with the 10th as a possible rain day.

599Toronto
05-16-2007, 08:41 AM
Can we count you in Skip? We'll figure out some meeting spots along the way so we can all head east together. Should make for a great day!!

If its a day ride, the 9th with 10th as rain day sounds ok to me, but we'll need to plan routes, and meet points carefully, as it could mean a looong day, and a lot of miles for some of us.

If its a weekend ride, how about the 9th/10th, with the 16th/17th as back up?

So you know how I mentioned I was a new rider? I completely forgot that I can't even legally ride on the highway yet! I still have my m1. I've passed my safety course so technically I have an m2 but I don't officially get it until the probation period is done (After June 16th I believe).

I'd like to go but won't be able to on those dates. And I need to get some highway (over 80km limit that is) experience before heading out for a trip. If anyone's up fro another ride later in the season I'll be good to go (and I'll have a non 599 buddy that would love to come too if that's cool).

599Toronto

I agree, we need to be realistic about our plans. Slide (so far) will have the longest ride due to his western starting point. I can meet Slide and Skip (??) in, or east of TO which should make the trek down the 401 more enjoyable.

Our options are pretty open from there -- either come and pick you up in Trenton/Belleville and venture north and west from there, or we meet in the Port Hope/Cobourg area and head north.

I honestly don't know the back roads of the area all that well outside of the Trenton/Frankford/Wooler areas, and would be relying on the map I posted here (http://www.honda599.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=517). Any advice you can provide would be a great help.

I think we also need to decide if we are talking one or two days. Need to also keep in mind that if we are making a weekend of it we'll have to ride with extra gear. I am sure I can 'rent' some sleeping space in Frankford for others if required.

599001
05-17-2007, 05:37 AM
My 2 cents...a weekend ride would be better, here's why.

A day ride would be a good chance for a meet and greet. We could meet at Brighton, then ride the back roads from there through Colborne, up rd 25N past Warkworth (and past rd 29 on the map--rd 24 is better anyway), over to Rice Lake, down towards Cobourg, and finish with the Port Hope back roads into Clarington. As I stated before, these are "nice" scenic roads, but not overly twisty, or good for being bad.

A weekend ride, on the other hand would allow riding some 500 roads, and open up lots of other roads. For example, the 509 ends at te top of hwy. 38 on hwy 7. Easy access to the Westport backroads, and Desert Lake Rd.( The single most twisty piece of pavement I've ever seen--lots of posted 20 and 30 kph corners. ) Need I say more? Check the map.

What do you think, people? As for extra gear, it could be dropped off here or in Frankford before a big (or agressive) ride. I have a spare room (and a comfy couch, if needed), and a secure garage, with tools and a 599 shop manual--just in case.

Sounds good to me too. When I am heading east, I usually just burn across the 407 to get the superslab out of the way. 2 days would allow us to do more of the 500 sweet, sweet goodness! :D

I can crash anywhere (much appreciated) or stay at a motel... whatever works. I am easy-going.... but.... if possible I would love to go with you guys on the 507 (along with 599001's suggestions). I dream about that road. 8)

Oh, and I totally agree with getting a solid plan/locations/etc. settled so we're all happy and get a good ride.

599Toronto
05-17-2007, 08:12 AM
A whopping 3 (including myself). There must be others out there interested in tagging along. I know that there are some 599s posted on the GTAMotorcycle.com site. Could also post there to stir up some interest. Alternatively we could keep it small. Let me know if you have any strong preference either way.

I'll send out the contact info to you guys tonight when I get home.

I think between us we can put together a ride/plan (route, rest stops, meals etc, etc.) and then open it up. It would be easier logistically, no?

I have no preference either way, although the thought of a bunch of Hornets tearing up the 500s sounds damn good!

Thanks for the added info that you sent. I'll redistribute an update later in the weekend as Slide provided some details as well.

I've sent Darth Vrees (Angus) a personal invite in the hopes that we can increase the turn out on the 9th. I'll keep you guys posted.

My pooch likes to get me up, as well. Sometimes he even lets me sleep in till 6:30, or so. Nothing will wake you faster than a big, slobbery, 90+lb Boxer landing on your bed first thing in the a.m..

599001

If we do the Flinton rd. 506 509 run (and I hope we do), there are several places along the way to eat/drink/relax, including a very bike friendly restaurant in Sharbot Lake. ( the owner recently traded his vfr 800 in for a new FZ1, and knows these roads like the back of his hand.)

Have you put any thought into when you will be heading out? (Friday eve.--to give us an early start on Sat., or would you be leaving home on Sat a.m.?)

I gotta scratch that 500 itch, Maybe I'll call my buddy Mark this morn. and ride up there today to check out the road conditions. He rides a new R6, and may want to join us, if that's cool. There are also 3 599 owners locally who have shown some interest--2 yellow 1 black, just to even things out, T.

We probably shouldn't get too carried away, though, as the group gets larger (and skills/experience more varied), the "pack" mentality takes over, and things have a way of spiraling out of control. I was in a group of about 12, one night last year, that ended with a monumental high-side that sent one rider to the hospital, and totally destroyed his bike--there were pieces of his RC51 spread out over about 150 yards of the road, and both ditches. Luckily, the cop who showed up also rides, and told us to head home, no charges laid!

599Toronto
05-19-2007, 07:47 AM
I too am heading out today. A buddy (VFR) and I are heading to Parry Sound to give my soon to be obsolete forks and tires one final hurrah. Should be a good ride.

Slide and I discussed heading out in good time on Saturday morning. His ride to me is about 1 1/2 hours. I was thinking of meeting him in the Woodbridge area around 8:00 or 8:30, depending on how early his dogs get him up.

The main thing is fun and safety. I don't want people getting up so early Saturday morning that they are exhausted by mid-afternoon. The last thing we need is a repeat of your group's experience.

Feel free to put together a route proposal, if you would like. We should be in or near Belleville by about 10:30. A quick fuel stop, and the dropping of a couple of bags, and we'll be ready to go.

Looks like it will be Slide, myself and possibly Darth Vrees from this side. I think that is plenty large for our first outing.

Let the fun begin!! :woohoo

599001
05-20-2007, 03:29 PM
I've been tossing some ideas around in my head, and here's what I've come up with so far: (depending on where you drop your bags)

Saturday: From Frankford to Stirling, Ridge Rd to Moira Rd, across to Hwy 37. North to 7, then Flinton Rd to 41.Stop at Northbrook for fuel. ( next service station is 80-100 km away) Hwy 506 to 509 through Plevna, Ompha, etc... back to Hwy 7 at Hwy 38. Stop at Sharbot Lake for lunch. Hwy 38 to Crow Lake Rd, Cty Rd 36 to Westport, out of Westport on 12 until it becomes 8.Straight out to 38 again, South on 38 and do Desert Lake Rd to Sydenham. Work our way west to Napanee (probably back roads to Hwy 401 at Odessa--exit 599-- A good photo opportunity if we park the bikes at the base of the sign!) Fuel up and break or whatever at Napanee. South from Napanee on Cty Rd 8, to Adolphustown, across the ferry to Prince Edward Cty and Hwy 33 back to my place for BBQ. (and if you are staying in Frankford Hwy 33 will lead you right there)This is probably a 4-5 hour ride, so we would need to take that into consideration. (and alter accordingly  )

Sunday: I am still working on that, but it will probably include some back roads north and west to incorporate Hwy 507 but that might be a long haul for a day ride. Still working on it...

599Toronto
05-20-2007, 07:43 PM
Wow, sounds great. I'll pull out the map tomorrow when I have fresh eyes and check out the route -- had a long COLD ride down from cottage country late this afternoon. Temps were well into the single digits -- it must May 2-4 weekend!! Hopefully it'll be a bit warmer in June!!

Thanks again for spending the time putting the route together!

599001
05-21-2007, 07:51 AM
Sunday: (still a work in progress)

Straight up 62N to bancroft (to save time--it's about 90 mins from Belleville). Then either North to Peterson Rd. (if for no other reason than its double 5-star rating 8) ), and get to 121 via 648, or just turn West at Bancroft to get to 121, then to 503, and down 507 to Peterborough for food, and figure the rest from there...

RND -- It's like a bad car crash, you just can't look away!! I bet you'll be the first to read this!!

599001 -- I've got room lined up in the Frankford area for 3 or 4 total (if required), and that seems to work for Saturday's ride. We can drop the bags before meeting in 'down town' Frankford. Sunday morning is a little out of the way, but could meet east of Sterling on 62. Any thoughts? It sounds like there will be enough of us to warrant a couple of different sleeping locations, unless you think otherwise.

Yes, the BBQ sounds fantastic -- thanks so much for the offer!

I'll send out the rider list tonight when I get home. We should establish a firm count and cap the list within the next couple of days.

Very much looking forward to the ride!

Just a few things to add: My actual location is Hillier (on hwy. 33 in Prince Edward County). Its about the same distance for me to Frankford as it is to Belleville, so I could meet you there, rather than you coming East to B'ville. Just PM or e-mail me the 911 address (road name and number), and I'll be there to meet you on Sat. (and sunday am). Also, since we're coming here for BBQ Sat. eve, we should head south at Napanee (County Rd. #8 ) and catch the Ferry across into the County. (ever had your bike on a boat? thats a weird sensation!) Then Hwy.33 to my door.

On Sunday, we'll need to be watchfull on hwy 62 for Cops. (those new black-and-whites are hard to spot head on) Also, Hwy 121 on the map we are using is shown as Hwy 118 on my map...just something to watch out for--I don't know these roads like the ones on Saturday.

But I tell ya. If you guys ,And I mean ALL of you, could get the time, I'd Love to meet up and do some Riding.. The backroads around here are Incredible.. Alot of corners that If you take at even 20-30 MPH, you really gotta lay it over...Most of it is 30-50 MPH and hardly a straight section...Just any road you wanna pick will have some Twisties ... Tomacana's area is quite the 2 Wheel paradise as well...I think he lives pretty close to Deals Gap (The Dragon)...

The best roads are north of you 599001. I tried the ones on the map near me and the ratings were WAY off. Frankly, they blew.

Any longer than a weekend and we could consider Quebec.

Pretty much any weekend with a good forecast, though I am on holidays from September 15th to the 23rd. I think we got really lucky last time considering how far ahead we planned. Calabogie is a good run. It includes Hwy 508 and 511, both of which are good roads. There are alot more roads that we didnt get to try last time including the one that the chatty lady at the restaurant suggested. (I tried this road a couple of weeks ago... it is actually a pretty fun road) If you want to make it a weekend again, you are welcome to crash here. That whole area north of the Kingston area is packed with good roads, some of which you may recognize from the pages of Cycle Canada. (This is one of their favoured areas for doing road tests)

I'll see what's going on the weekend of the 15th and get back to you. Haven't heard from TO in a while? Thanks for the offer to crash at yours!

BTW - Where was that restaurant we had lunch?

Hope you guys and the pooches are doing well!

I'm still alive, just been MIA for a long while. I should be able to make something in Sept. work other than the weekend of the 22nd. Let me know.

He's alive!!!
Well boys, (and girl) looks like Sept. 15-16 is a good weekend for an eastern Ontario ride...these are some of the best (if not THE best) roads in the province. If anyone is interrested in joining us, or offering input--feel free...

Right now, it looks like You, slide, myself, Mark wants to join us again, and it sounds like UKKev is going to try to join us. I believe Pepper also showed some interest. We should try a new topic, and see if we can get some more horneteers to partake in the fun... Since we may be heading Eastish, maybe a couple of Ottawa riders will speak up this time, though I think I remember hearing about one of the Ottawa area riders having an "incident"..lytew8 maybe?
