View Full Version : Vibration at 45 mph

I saw on here before that somebody had mentioned this and asked if anyone else had this problem. Well, mine is doing it. Right between 40 and 45 mph the handle bars vibrate. Only right around there too. I have checked the air pressure and it's fine.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is it a big problem or could it become one? Why only at 40-45mph? Any comments, idea's, or suggestions?

Based on my experience with cars: if vibrations occur only at a particular speed, you may need your wheels re-balanced. I wouldn't bet my life on this, but it won't hurt to look into it.

Also, give a local bike shop a call and ask them what it might be.

Make sure it's ground speed and not engine speed that it's happening at. Check back with us after you've made sure it happens at the same ground speed regardless of engine RPMs.

I get a lot of vibration between 5500 and 6000 to 65000 rpm (depends on the day). Are you sure it's just at a certain wheel speed?

I get my best vibes at about 7500. *blush*

I understand a V-twin is better for that then an inline-4 if you know what I mean.

Not really . . . . My Norton was really good though!

what kind of jet engine did you put in your bike?? just a joke but it was too easy.

Take her to redline in 6th, pull in the clutch, swack her down to first and dump it.

You'll experience 65000rpm followed shortly by valve meeting piston and con rod exiting the crankcase :P!

Wow, glad I got a few responses, wish they were actually comments about the issue and not just a bunch of hooha's posting jokes.

Yes, I have checked to make sure it's not at a certain RPM. I have experienced this while excellerating in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear, both at different RPM's as well I have checked it while coasting, no gear at all and it does it right between 40-45.

Sounds like a tire balance issue to me. Safely get your bike in the air, pull the front tire, check balance (http://www.clarity.net/~adam/tire-changing.html) and see if it's wildly off. Do the same for the rear, even if you discover the front is way off (if one's off, they both could be!).

Give him a break, that's metric RPMs, it's about 10 times an imperial RPM.

It could be a wheel balancing issue (check to see if you lost the weight) or your steering head bearings may be a little loose. If it's the latter, it can cause sloppy handling too, and clatter or judder on braking - have you noticed anything like that?

Don't do anything until you check the air in your tires.

Also, make sure it happens on all kinds of road surface. Sometimes the pavement surface is wrong for the tires/wheelbase/damping, etc.

Yes, yes, yes, but did he *double-check* the air in his tires???

:D

Perhaps his GF told him not to...

I mean...if you use synthetic air, make sure you are not using "regular" air pressure. Yeah...that's what I meant.

We get easily distracted...

Wicasa, as mentioned, it would seem mostly symptomatic of a tire balance issue. As long as you can eliminate road surface, tire pressure, excessive play in the head bearing (sloppy steering) or something stuck in the tire - I'd be running down this road. Definitly get it checked out as it is not sound normal.

What ever you find out, please do come back and post up what it was - always interested plus it may help someone else down the road.

Its the bike, period. The hornet i ride has done the same thing as you describe since it was new. I have had lots of bikes that didnt even have the tires balanced and they dont have the shake in the bars at 35-45 mph . Just my 2 cents.

Mine does not shake. It should NOT do it. So get it fixed!

I don't have this problem either. But maybe a few came off the production line a little shaky???

maybe his tires are filled with nitrogen :D mine are

What does nitrogen have to do with wheel balance?

nuthing, look up , it was in reference to checking air pressures said a few times joking about synthetic air and double checking air pressures ....

yeah, mine, too. here was the thread i started about it awhile ago:

http://www.honda599.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=844

as i said there, the shake is super-minimal, as in it doesn't start if i have my hands on the bars at all. as in, i can't feel it if i have my hands on the bars.

it's possible that there's something off on my bike (and that something was off when it was brand-new), but unless it gets worse i'm not too worried. i'm replacing the front tire one of these days, and when i do i'll check the balance on the old tire. i'll be doing some stuff with the forks then, too, so maybe i'll check out the head bearings.

i dunno. people have very different levels of comfort with things that are a little 'off'. i can imagine a shake that would make me nervous, but mine just ain't that kind, at least not yet.

cheers!

Well, Regarding the last comment. My shaking is not minimal. Whether I have my hands on the bars or not it still shakes at 40-45.

I did look to see if the wheel was balanced and I noticed that there are a couple of weights on it. But they are placed on either side of where one of the spokes are. So I'm wondering if because they had to put the weights in between the spoke that this might be the issue. Those wieghts possibly aren't exactly where they need to be because of how the wheel is made with the 3 spokes. I'm calling them spokes for lack of a better word and because I don't know what you would call them. But I'm thinking maybe this is the issue?

Anyone else out there with this issue take a look at your wheel and see where the weights are placed.

I still haven't gotten into the dealership for the servicing and to see if they can figure it out. As soon as I do I'll let you know what I find out.

I went to the dealer to ask about a recall and he said there were none. Dude told me to bring to vin to him next time im up there, not sure why, maybe gives more info on the bike. I plan on getting to the bottom of it as well as i like the bike.
