View Full Version : Chain wear?

When I got my 599, the chain stretched to the point of needing an adjustment in the first 100-200 miles. I adjusted it to spec. Since then I have been about as anal as someone can be about keeping the chain clean and lubed, probably giving her a good service every 300 to 600 miles or after riding in the rain or some other severe condition. I have taken the front sprocket cover off periodically and cleaned the front sprocket and cover. I have made efforts to keep the "hardened spray" and road grit off of the upper and lower chain guides (right behind the front sprocket).

So today at 8000 miles, I just remounted the rear tire after having the original BT56 replaced. The chain is still at the same, original adjustment as it had at 200 miles. I swear, the chain and sprockets have not worn enough in 8000 miles to warrant adjustment. While it is unreasonable to assume that the chain and sprockets will last forever, I can see getting at least 30K out of this set, perhaps more.

So I am curious as to everyone's experience. Let 'er rip.

Your odometer is malfunctioning.

Mine wore out at about 14k, but I ride in dry and occasionally dusty conditions.

I could snap a pic for the disbelievers. The adjustment marks are still in the "new" area of the chain adjustment sticker...

I have over 10K on mine, my husband is like you and my chain looks like I just bought the bike, I don't see where I will be replacing soon, nice to have someone maintaining it for me!!

I abused the ever living shit out of my chain. Rarely oiled it, rarely adjusted it, never cleaned it - basically everything you're not supposed to do.

The chain ended up kicking the bucket shortly before 24000km... I think that's like 15000miles. The sprockets showed very little wear, but the chain would not stay adjusted.

Rather then sending a chain through the alternator I replaced the whole kit.

On my last bike I put 20,000 miles on it as hard as I could and I never had to replace the chain. My sprockets looked good as new too.
