View Full Version : Squeaky brakes!
sauroang 05-25-2007, 07:47 AM Does anyone else have brakes that squeak when nearly stopped?? The front has a very low tone to it, and the rear one has a high pitch squeak to it, only at about 10 mph to stopped. As far as the tone in the front, I've also noticed it while rolling it slowly in the garage (only while sitting on it), so it's obviously not just the brake up front. Any suggestions?
Sachi 05-25-2007, 08:14 AM I had this happen on one of my old Guzzis occasionally. (I'm quite hard of hearing so I felt it more than heard it!) I never bothered to fix it. I know there are some tricks to help deal with it, though - I believe there's a compound that you can put behind the brake pads that can dampen the vibrations, and you can roughen up the pads a bit and then re-bed them in. I'm sure someone else here will be able to confirm (or more likely say I'm an idiot.)
rndthought 05-25-2007, 08:15 AM If mine sits for a few days and it has been wet out, it will do that the first few times I apply the brakes (accompanied by a bit of a grinding noise – rust?)...just like my car...if it does it all the time maybe the pads are in need of replacement?
sauroang 05-25-2007, 08:21 AM Well, the brakes don't have a grinding noise or anything, and I don't feel any abnormal vibrations (or any at all really) when I'm braking...also the front one has the noise when I'm just rolling it in the garage (without brakes). The back one is probably brake dust or something like that I figure...I don't usually ride if it's raining a lot either, since when it rains here it usually means it's freakin cold out. Thanks for the replies 8)
Sachi 05-25-2007, 08:37 AM Sound is an audible vibration.
sauroang 05-25-2007, 08:46 AM yes sound is an "audible" vibration that travels through air. But you don't feel sound with your hands.
ranger5oh 05-25-2007, 09:02 AM Mine squeaks at low speed too... its nothing. Its normal for disc brakes. If it squeaks when you apply the brakes at ridign speed, then you need to replace them.
Sachi 05-25-2007, 09:05 AM ?? Come now. I can feel many sounds. Of course, being deaf (I use a cochlear implant to hear) I make use of just about every sense I have to pick up sound, so it is obvious to me, but think about it. You may not be able to feel the sound of your brakes squeaking through your seat or handlebars, but that's not the issue here. The point is, the sound is caused by a vibration. To get rid of the sound, you need to find out what is causing the vibration. You could have a serious problem, such as extremely worn pads, such that the locating pins are grinding in to the disks. (It doesn't sound like it.) You could have a buildup of dust. You could have incompatible pad material. You could have a bit of something stuck under the pad that makes the pad vibrate. Who knows. But they are vibrating. Find out why, fix it, and the sound will go away.
sauroang 05-25-2007, 09:15 AM Nope ranger, no squeaks at higher speeds....strictly under 10 mph when coming to a stop. I just went out to take a look at the brakes and they are nowhere near worn down. Sachi, I would hope the pad material isn't incompatible since the bike is stock and is just now approaching a year old, and has to be stored during the winter months. I appreciate everyone's advice though.
Sachi 05-25-2007, 09:45 AM It sounds (ha) that there is very little to worry about, then -- it is just one of those things that brakes do on occasion. :)
This is an issue on some 919's too. There are many posts about it on WT. I have an open warranty claim with Honda USA about it. They are shrugging their shoulders now. After replacing the rotors and pads, the noise persists. It's a harmmonic sound - kind of like rubbing a moist finger on the edge of a wine glass - at the very end of a stop.
I'm tired of it and not willing to lose the bike to Honda and my dealer any more and have ordered Galfer wave rotors and matching HH pads. That oughta solve it!
djamalt 05-25-2007, 04:49 PM Have this problem on occassion too. Two seperate mechanics suggested a light rub with sand paper on the disk from time to time. Nothing to grind away the metal, just to scratch a little texture into it. It worked just fine, but I'm not so sure it "should" be done.
02KBGT 05-25-2007, 04:58 PM The same happens on cars often.. I dont have my bike yet :( . But, If the same things hold true, and as someone mentioned. You can get a compound to apply behind the pad that will Stop the noises( in my experience). However, It can be temporarily fixed by roughing up the Pad or the Rotor(rotor works beter)..But that only lasts until they wear smooth again.. Do you notice if the noise gets louder, or changes at all when you apply the brake harder or stop faster?.
BTW, Another trick is to buy a different compund Pad... Usually a "Luxury" type pad will make less noise if that equates to anything for a Bike ..Again, I'm comparing this to a car...A High performance pad will make TONS of noise..Because they want them to stop fast, with no concern about noise... Hope I helped somehow..
My bike does the exact same thing, it has since new. Doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes, and only at slow speeds just before stopping. Its normal. A little grease applied to the contact points, where the pad makes metal to metal contact with the caliper might stop it, but it doesn't bother me enough to bother trying. If you try it, you need a grease designed for the task, and the key is to use it sparingly, and don't get it on the friction suface! If you know someone at a Nissan dealer, they use a factory specified product called PBC Grease. The "pb" is for the lead in it, and the "c" is for the copper in it. The stuff is about $45 a jar, but its the holy grail of brake grease. If that stuff doesn't shut it up, nothing will!
Installed new Galfer SS lines last night. Had to bleed the brake systems of course, and filled 'em up with regular DOT 4 fluid. Went out for a ride this morning and killed a tank of gas. No more howl, noise, screech, no matter how hard I tried. Jusy an FYI - give it a try and see if that does the trick.

Mine does the same thing, it has since day one, never had any performance issues with the stopping power at all just the little noise as I come to a slow speed stop. Scuffing up the disc will quiet it down, but I don't like doing that all that much. I just live with it.
robkb 06-01-2007, 06:00 PM My '06 599 does the exact same thing! I just asked nearly the same question you did. I guess we just live with it.
