My 04' doesn't have the oil level window. Just a dip stick. What it the recommended amount of oil to put in it? Manual seems to be saying 4 quarts with a new filter.

Or till the dipstick reads full. I prefer to believe the dipstick over the manual.

I use about 4.2 quarts but only because I pour about a third of one down the side of the motor in the process...

My oil usually comes in a gallon jug, so after draining the pan and replacing the filter, all of it goes in the filler plug. The dipstick reads at the bottom of the FULL line on level ground after that. Perfect!

No kidding.Mine's stuck.

I started changing my oil but removing the drain plug was an overwhelming challenge.
I stopped before breaking something;I'll try again when I have:
1) more time
2) more patience

yep continually over tightening the drain plug can cause BAD problems..... stretch and or stripped threads / fracture cracks in oil pan....it should not come loose either though .... soooo just torque and as they say "Jobs A Goodun" or "Bobs Your Uncle"

You mentioned 22lbs.ft of torque for the drain plug.
I have untightened my rear axle to adjust my chain( 88lbs.ft) and that did not feel as hard as my drain plug :idonno
I'll try again, making sure I don't screw up the pan ( a $1000 part new!!!)

The 919 doesn't either, but it comes with mounting points for an easy install.

You can use an early model Mazda Miata Bosch (because its black in color) oil filter (#3300). It works perfectly, at about half the price of a Honda one.

BUT I do use Mobil 1 4T motorcycle racing oil 10w x 40w. Its expensive but I feel better about changing it only once a year. Most write ups state that a motorcycle engine eats up regular oils additives in about 2000 miles.

I looked up the cross-reference, and it appears that the Mobil 1 M1-108 should be the equivalent. Roughly 2.5 inches long.

The only question is what color it is. You obviously don't want a white oil filter hanging off the front of the block. I might run out to Advance and Autozone today and check it out.

Just thought someone might find that useful.

My receipt says $11.96... and $3.89/qt for GN4. It all cost me right at $30. I don't feel bad since I pay $11 for Mobil 1 filters in my car. Wix in the truck, don't remember what it cost.

Also an important side note that many people don't pay attention to is that when you check the oil in a 599 you need to:

1. Have the bike exactly level (you have to have someone hold it up straight)
2. You check the oil level by setting the dipstick in the hole (you do not screw it in).

.. Just a side note!

i just recently installed a new cross referenced oil filter by Purolator PL14612, ITS YELLOW, LIKE MY BABY! By the way, if you get the 4610, it will be the 3.25inch i think, and wont fit the 599, im not sure though if there is more room, for the 919, between headers and oil filter placement

Thanks for the vid, man. It helped.
I changed the oil myslef!
My "drip pan" was an aluminum cake pan which (I wish I'd noticed this) only holds about 2.5 quarts of liquid. Yeah, I made a mess.
My strap wrench BROKE! But, Advanced Auto Parts gave me my money back. I got the filter off w/no problems using a big pair of pliers-type thing I found in my dad's shop.
Everything's fine and ready to roll.
:clap YAY for me!!!
I used 10w-40 and a filter I bought from the Honda shop.

There are multiple filters that our bikes can use, the Honda Filter(15410-MFJ-D01), HiFlo (HF-204), K&N (KN-204) to name a few with their respective part numbers.

For those of you that also have a track bike those same filters fit an R6 03-08, R1 05-08, and I think the 03-06 ZX6. If your local shop is charging more than $11.99 then it's higher than MSRP from Honda. You all should also know that most Honda hard parts are priced with 50% profit margin (sometimes more) built in straight from Honda.

You want to bargain shop? Hit your local shop up knowing the numbers they get stuff for. If you want to know just PM me with a part # and description from your local shop, I'll be more than happy to give the secrets away so you can save some money.

Just changed the oil for the first time since I bought the 599. EASY PEAZY (especially with a rear stand.) I used 2 Aluminum cake pans that you can find at a dollar store to drain the oil into. Filled her with Castrol GTX 4T and used a Walmart oil filter for a 92 Mazda Miata. I didn't see any 4T oil at Wallmart WTF?

With the pans it ran me about $20. Not too shabby.

919 Wix filter 51358

Steve
I watched part 1. Make sure you can loosen the filter before
you drain the oil. I have run into a few filters that don’t want to
come off. If you start the motor, the oil pressure pushing against
the filter or trying to get out from the seal will help to unseat it.

The center stand is a really nice add on if your not to concerned about weight. They are a little pricey but worth it.

it is of my opinion that a center stand offers no advantages or added convenience to the task of doing oil changes.

When filling it helps keep my magic all knowing eye of oil level. I don't think the 599 has an eye but the 919 does.

I also use it when filling my gas tank so I can get a little more in there.

Oh yeah, i guess i didn't think of that. However, you'll get a somewhat inaccurate reading because the rear is higher up. It's just like putting it on a rear swingarm stand. It's probably not a big deal, but still...

Seriously? I don't know who pissed in your Cheerios this morning, but you better find someone else to take it out on. As beardo and Sniper can attest, I'm not so good at playing victim to forum bullying.

People call me out on what I spend on my bike all the time. You're just not paying attention. And that's fine. I want a sharp looking bike. So I made it happen. You might find fault with that. You can go right on ahead and do that. I'm the one riding it. I'm not going to tell you to "grow up" because you have a filter fetish. I have better things to do.

Anyway... I'm not the only one who uses those filters. I'll go ahead and take my chances on the flow rate differential. You know why? I've been doing it for years. Plenty of people here have seen my bike and it runs just spiffy. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You don't have to like how I do things, but if it works, it works. No "growing up" involved.
