So far I've put 405 miles on her. So am I ready for an oil change? after tomorrow I should have well over 500 miles..And from what I'm hearing, 600 is the time you change out the Break-in oil.... So does anyone have any suggestions on what to use? I'm deff. not going with Synthetic yet as its way to soon IMHO.. Any help is greatly appreciated..

I used Honda GN4 10w-40 and an OEM Honda filter (12 bucks for the friggin filter alone OUCH!!!) @ 573 miles. Then I went cruising around locally with the camera so I could snap a couple pics at the magic mileage...599! Just use any good quality filter and oil that is not "energy-conserving", as the factory manual recommends not to for the sake of the clutch.

Also, try the search feature- oil has been a hotly contested topic 'round here. Maybe a new post in that thread could even get MotoGP posting again. Anyone know where he's been hiding?

It won't hurt to change it before 600 miles. When you do change it, Honda GN4 is just fine. Also, you can buy an automotive oil filter that's about the same, or probably the exact same, for a heck of a lot cheaper. Look for a non-Fram oil filter for early 90s RX-7s and Miatas. They'll be the same filter number. Remember, NAPA Gold filters are just rebadged Wix filters, some of the best you can buy.

Thanks guys.. I plan to do My 600 Mile Tune-up myself...I already know how to adjust the clutch, chain, throttle, etc. etc.. So I dont plan to ride it 300 mles to where I bought it for all this....I could take it to my local shop I suppose.. But those guys are notorious for Being A$$holes...So I'll probably just go there for the oil and filter...
I've broke the bike in the best way I know how..same way I do a fresh rebuilt car engine (I used to put a few together for racing).... And from what I can see, a bike breakin is exactly the same as a Hi Performance V8... Keep the RPM below about 2/3 Redline, But give it hell to that point...And never, ever let the RPM stay steady... And after I do this oil change, which should be tomorrow afternoon..I plan to put it on the limiter a couple of times...

Where is MotoGP? Has that baby arrived, or is he in "angry mode" again? :P

Of course you don't. Any warranty claim can't be denied if you've had the work done through a Honda dealer. You might have to fight a bit more if you do it all yourself, but receipts help!

Just got back from TRYING to get some GN4...Would you believe my local Dealer doesnt eve stock Honda Oil?.....This is friggin nuts....Its Jims Motorcycles in Johnson City, TN...They've been in business since like 1940-50 ..Its a Damn HONDA dealership and they dont even use HONDA oil.... I started to ask the guy why not...But then I thought, This place has a pretty bad rep for being assholes and screwing you outa money with BS ... So I didnt even bother...What a joke... So now I either have to ride 1.5 hrs to another dealer, or use regular motoroil...Castrol GTX work ok in your opinion?

Any good name brand oil will be just fine, as long as it's not the Energy Conserving type.

I ran Castrol GTX 10W-40 in all my bikes, it worked as well as any of the other oils I've tried. It will work out just fine. :)

I always liked Shell Rotella T 15w-40 Diesel Oil...same stuff i put in my Super Duty PU. You can find it at Wally World, any truck stop, and most auto parts stores.

Did the change using Castrol GTX 10w-40... Thanks for the insight..I'll probably use it from now on cause I hate switching oil's.. And I use it in my car, only 10w20... I'm off for a ride..

Yes guys, I'm here. I'm keep up with the board. No angry mode here....lol. Pam is 32 weeks pregnant now. I'm taking 9 semester hours for both summer sessions, and working full time. Between the baby showers, friends, school, work, pregnant wife, my time is very limited. I definitely read the boards and keep up to date. I usually don't chime in unless I really have input that I think might be valuable.

In any case...it's all about time management for me right now....

I have been getting in PLENTY of riding time though. I still say the Hornet is a good first bike!

I've switched to amsoil synthetic at 5,000 miles. I'm very pleased. Maybe it's in my head but I swear the shifting is smoother.

You do realize there are literally 100's of online vendors you can order any tpyue of oil you want to from....right?

No need to drive 1.5 hours or to use "regular motor oil." Just order what you want online. It will be on your front doorstep in 2-3 says.

rgr that Mech...But I'm a NOW guy lol... I started to buy the Amsoil at the shop, And should have really. Your the 3rd person this week to tell me its good stuff. Although I'm not going Synthetic for a while, I do want to get a little more break-in time on it...
As a side note.. I was SHOCKED  at how clean the Break-in oil was when it came out..And SUPER thin..Was like water running out the drain.... My actual plan is to run this Castrol for 1000-1500 miles and change it again... If these Engines are anything Like a Hi-Po V8, they are still making metal and wearing in pretty hard a 2000 miles. I can only imagine this engine being worse, Turning such High RPM. And with 12:1's in it....keep in mind i'm a V8 guy. Dont know alot about the Bike engines..

You make it sound like a bad thing to use "car" oil.

My motor was still "breaking in" until about 10,000 miles, according to my oil analysis reports.

That was not my intention. It's just that he made it sound like he did NOT want to have to use "car" oil. I'm not about to get in to the car oil vs motorcycle spec oil debate. It's been covered. I was just addressing the previous poster... 8)

Just remember, wet clutches don't like the 'Energy Conserving' oils.

Gotcha. :)

In the long run, ponying up the extra bucks for some motorcycle synthetic doesn't hurt the ol' wallet. :)

Go to the bike shop and tell them the year, make and model and they will give you the correct washer.
