I'm a new member and this is my first post. I'm currently riding an '05 SV650S. I love the bike but don't like the ergos or suspension and I don't want to spend the money to upgrade it.

I found a new black '06 599 for $6500. Of course taxes will add to that price but I'm wondering if $6500 is a good price.

Thanks for helping out a newb to the forum.

I want to say, "no".

It is last year's bike... almost 2 years down the line by this fall, it should cost you this much "out the door", or perhaps even less than that. I don't recollect where I saw it, but I could have sworn someone said they bought one for 6000 out the door.

Secondly, as much as I love my 599, I don't work for Honda, so I'm going to tell you straight up - 599 isn't going to give you much of a suspention upgrade from an SV.

I will let others confirm or argue against this point. It's my 2 cents.

PS. Welcome to the forum!

$6500 is too much. I have no idea about the suspension; I've been plenty happy with mine though.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I'm really thinking about holding out for the new street triple. Your post may have just made up my mind for me.

Easy, easy! Don't start talking crazy!!! :D

I know in the UK the Street Triple is going to be priced around the same as the Hornet/599... because it was created (mostly) to combat the Hornet's popularity. However, I'm pretty sure it is going to be priced quite a bit higher on this side of the pond...

Also, you're not going to get any better suspension with the Street Triple. They swapped out the Daytona's suspension with a more basic set up. A few people on this site have switched up springs and even just switched oil with some good results.

Trying to be objective... hope the above doesn't seem bias! :P

What does "good price" mean to you? Fair market value? Below market? Are you looking for a steal? I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, but you should be clear about what you're trying to accomplish.

In any case, you should know the "fair market value" of the product. I would define this as the sales price (or price range) of comparable products now available in your market. Finding comparables is not an exact science; I would include other makes/models besides the 599. Remember, fair market value is not necessarily what someone paid in another part of the country, or 12 months ago, etc.

Good luck!

Keep in mind here, Street Triple is likely to be popular and you will be paying around 2 grand more for it than you would for an '06 599. Just saying... think about what matters to you most.

I'm looking for what everyone is looking for in a naked bike. Fun, decent handling, reasonable comfort, and bang for the buck. In hindsight I wish I had bought a naked SV instead of the S. But I can't complain to much about my current bike. It matches up with most of my criteria.

I bought my SVS as a left over for a couple hundred bucks less than what they are asking for the 599. I'm not looking for a steal but I would like to know if it's a fair price. It sounds like they aren't to far off.

I paid a little more for a new 06, but I've seen dealers listing them on the internet for $6500. Given the invoice for the bike, I wouldn't expect them to go much lower than that. IIRC, invoice was just under $6400.

The Street Triple is a cool little bike, but I think it's going to cost around $8k, if that means anything to you.

the dealer cost for a 599 is $6300 and some change ( in my area anyway) thats what i paid for my '04 from the showroom. $6500 is too much, you could talk them down.

I went throught the SV or 599 dilemma too.

I bought my 2004 599 new in 2006, here is what I was considering at the time :

I want a naked/standard bike
I want a 600cc bike
The 599 costs more than the SV.
The SV has a V-twin and I like torque
The 599 has an in-line 4 and I'm no racer/RPM freak
Fairings suck
The unfaired SV is...well...ugly
The 599's looks rock
Both bikes get excellent reviews
The 599 has carbs, the SV in injected

What happened is that I found a Honda dealer that was itching to get a new 2004 599 out the door 9(selling for cost), and was willing to buy my '84 shadow for a fair price. The Suzuki dealer was not so accomodating. That is mostly what sold the 599, otherwise I was going Suzuki. The other factor was honda's legendary reliability.

From what I have seen in various reviews and the test runs I had on a SV the suspensions are pretty comparable, although the rear end seemed to behave better on the Suzuki. Then again I am 6'1" and I weigh 210 lbs.

As far as spending money to upgrade I am still resisting it myself but I sense that a day will come where I'll just go nuts and start changing stuff left and right.

Have you poked around for some aftermarket bars for your SV just to see how much that would actually cost ? You could dramaticaly alter the riding position with new bars or even just some risers.

IMHO if it is a new bike you probably won't get them to budge much. It is a specialty bike and doesn't compete much with other bikes. If want to buy a 599 but think the price is too much...what are the alternatives? (you took the SV out of the running) Bikes are a bit different than cars, just because it's a year old, this doesn’t necessarily kill its value...especially when there is no new model. If you saw another post of mine about the prices in Italy, the old model Hornet (’06) is still sold and for only a few hundred less than the NEW model...so our style is still very desirable even against a new model.

Deals are found on used bikes...hopefully with a known history.

I was the one that just got the 06 for about 6k out the door. just over it actually. less than 6500 all together. if it was that much i would have gotten the shadow probably...

Hold out you can always find a better deal. With that in mind I bought the only used 04 599 in my area. Went to Indianapolis, big city more hondas, they didn't even have one. Ended up finding it in my home town. I payed 5200 out the door for an 04 599 Asphalt with only 218 miles. I would say a good deal, but as I stated before you can always find better. It's simply a matter of how bad you want it then.

Bought mine at the end of June in Dallas for $6350... not including TTL. Since I really like the bike I thought it was a good price, ~$1050 off MSRP... in case you want a recent actual point of reference :)

I got mine last week (over 400 miles all ready!). An '04 for 6100 plus DMV so 62something out the door. Dealers were asking anywhere from 6200 to 6500 for the 06 (after including all their "fees"). Soo if the 6500 included dealer fees I would say it was the high end of normal, but if it didn't include fees than it is too much.

Either way, you can likely get a few hundred lower.

I recently bought my '06 599 too but got it used. It has 300 miles on it when I bought it and was bought new from dealer by previous owner in Feb 07. She showed me the invoice and it was for the same price $6500. However, I got it from her at $5500 :D So, you might be able to find a gently used bike at a much cheaper price without any tax, etc.

Welcome to the forum Calai! Nice to see a fellow SBRer on here. :thumbsup

PS. I can't believe how good of a deal you got on your bike! A year ago I paid 5300 for a 2004 with 1,300 miles on it. Just comes to show that if you're patient enough to really look, you'll find a great deal.

Paid $6700 Canadian for a 2006 with 1500Km on clock in June. Previous owner had had since April. Before that it had been sitting in a show room since the previous year 8)

I bought my '06 in feb '07 for 6300 + ttl. I'm not some rich guy but I wouldn't let 200.00 ruin a deal if I didn't have another viable option. I'm going to a Triumph dealer tomorrow but I don't expect they'll give me much info about street triple but you never know. I have always been concerned about british bikes and cars. I feel the 599 is great because you get a european bike with Honda reliability.

I paid $6700 for my '06 in Feb '07. I had to order one through my local Honda shop. I live in a small town where the nearest price competitor would have been 60 miles away or more. If I need it worked on, I've already established good relations with the local dealer. And all he charged was 7% state sales tax.

The one I just picked up for my wife was a jewel.

Got a 2004 Model with just under 3,000miles. The dealer was asking $6300, gave an offer of $5k + TTL so walked out with the bike for $53xx.

I knew that bikes are cheaper in US, and other countries, but didn't now that the difference was that big.
I paid about 21.800$ ! :?
The 06 wasn't much cheaper.

Good luck with your choice, coach!

Makes the garage and bike look nicer. Makes a great mat to wrench/change oil on without having to worry about the garage floor. Try it, Home Depot assorted colors $15

I found some Costa Rican dollars today (not dollars, forget what they're called)... 250 of them turned out to be worth just under $0.50, so I hate to think what they pay for bikes... or Happy Meals...

hey everybody!

New here, theres a 599 for sale its a 2004 and they want $4700 and it has 1900 miles on it. I love the look of the bike and this is coming from someone who owns a Harley LOL. just looking for some opinions before making the jump. THANKS!

Sounds like a very fair price. That price is pretty good for a new bike period (1900mi is nothing). I'm sure you could find one cheaper, but probably not in as good a shape and definately with more miles.

If it matters mine is up for sale with 6700 miles on it. I can assure you mine has been very well taken care of. Comes with a pyramid plastics undertray, all factory manuals, keys, etc., a Give A240 windscreen, and a pit bull rear stand. Just had oil change, new chain and JT sprockets (stock size) installed.

If you're interested, PM me. I'll gladly work out a deal you won't find anywhere else.
