View Full Version : Southern Ontario Swarm – September 15/16
Slide 08-03-2007, 07:50 AM Having a had a great time at the last Southern Ontario Swarm, there is a lot of interest in doing another ride on the weekend of September 15-16. So far there is commitment from:
• Slide (me)
• 599Toronto
• 599001 + Mark (guest R6 rider)
• UKKev (maybe - come on, commit!)
As 599001 mentioned, it would be awesome if some of the Ottawa riders made it seeing as they are pretty close to where the action will be. Speaking of which, it looks like the TBD route will be on the roads between Kingston & Algonquin. Having ridden these roads a few times, I can safely say they are the best in the province. I am going to defer to 599001 for the route because he has the most thorough knowledge of the area.... although I would love to check out the 511 this time!
Anyway, it would be great to get as many 599s out there as possible. It's a great time and an excellent experience! Come on! Come on!
599Toronto has started a database, so if you're interested, reply to this post and we'll get you on the list!

Pepper 08-03-2007, 10:00 AM I'm in!!!
Can't wait to ride with you all.
ukkev 08-03-2007, 01:32 PM I'm in for sure now... :)
599001 08-03-2007, 10:41 PM Well said, Slide! I'm working on a few ideas, (for possible routes, lunch/photo stops,ect..) and will submit them soon, to see what everyone thinks. Then maybe 599T would highlight the map for us again. Rest assured, the 511 will be in there. --just had a thought (ouch...). If I were to rent a cottage/cabin in Sharbot Lake for that weekend, that would put us right in the middle of the action. The best roads in the Province...5 minutes from your door!--In any direction!!
599Toronto 08-04-2007, 05:54 AM I just checked the weather forecast for the weekend of Sept 15. Nothing but sunshine for the the 2nd Ontario Swarm!! :D
I'd be happy to do some map highlighting '001.
Keep us posted on that painful thought you had. Depending on the number of riders and cost of the cottage, it would certainly be an option.
Slide 08-04-2007, 07:56 AM Love the cottage idea! I was thinking that last weekend when we finally made it up to Peterson Road... "Why the hell don't we just stay up here?!?"
Let me know if there is anything I can help out with.
599001 08-04-2007, 09:59 AM A few friends, and I rented a cabin up there a few years ago. the owner has 4 cabins, all in fairly close proximity to each other. If I remember right, the cost was pretty reasonable, and the larger cabin sleeps about 8 people. I dont remember the phone number, so I'll have to do some leg work to get the needed info... (sounds like a perfect excuse for a ride!)
ukkev 08-04-2007, 10:59 AM :thumbsup
599001 08-05-2007, 10:50 PM Ok, assuming that we are renting a cabin, in or near Sharbot Lake, and are meeting there friday night, here are some ideas...
As before, once 599T works some map magic, things will be more clear. Also, routes can easily be changed to meet timelines, or personal prefrence. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and gas in Sharbot Lake.
Saturday: Hwy 38S to Desert Lake Rd. to CR 5 to CR 10N(Perth Rd.) to Perth. (break, gas, food?) 511 to 508 (Gas/food available at corner of 508/511) turn left onto 508 (it will become CR65, then71 before reaching Hwy. 41) 41S to Vennachar Junction, turn left, and take the south leg of the 509 through Ardoch back to Hwy 7, and 38 back to cabin. After a rest, those up for it could then maybe head south again for a Quick blast around the Crow Lake Rd, CR36S to Westport then CR's 12/8 to 38 and back loop.
Sunday: 38N to 7 to 509 (North leg- through Ompah), to 41 to 28 to 514/515 to Combermere, left onto 517 to unnamed Rd, (follows river to Hwy 62 near Maple Leaf) left again on 62 to Maynooth, then Peterson Rd. -PRKA- (Peterson Road Kicks Ass!!)to 648 to CR 4 to Buckhorn RD 3, then 507 south to Peterborough as before...If time allows, we could also shoot for some Barry's Bay backroads...
What do y'all think?
Roddy.
Slide 08-06-2007, 07:00 AM What do I think...... sounds awesome! :thumbsup
599Toronto 08-06-2007, 03:59 PM Route looks great Roddy, but can't you find any cabins on Peterson Rd. so that we can just ride that for two solid days?!?!?!? Mmmmm, Peterson!! I was completely unaware I could have feelings this strong for a road!! :D
Let me know what help you need surrounding the research and booking of the cabin(s), including but not limited to reservations, $$$, $$$ or $$$.
Here's a legend and the proposed routes:
- RED -- general location of the cabins.
- YELLOW -- Saturday ride, heading south and traveling counter-clockwise.
- GREEN -- Optional Saturday evening ride, heading east and traveling clockwise.
- BLUE -- Sunday ride, heading north from cabins.

Darth Vrees 08-06-2007, 05:10 PM Oh man I hope I can make this one! I start at Honda in Alliston on the 20th of August, so with a little luck I will not be scheduled for that weekend! I'm hoping!
599001 08-06-2007, 06:01 PM Hey there Slide and 599Toronto, 599001 just had me checking out the route for the 2nd Swarm. I don't recall seeing Prince Edward County highlighted at all! I was looking so forward to seeing you and preparing dinner for you guys again! I can't believe I am not included!!
I am not driving to Sharbot Lake to cook you dinner!!!
Ang!
599Toronto 08-06-2007, 08:46 PM Roddy assured us that you would deliver in the new Angmobile!! Damn that Roddy, always tricking us into not hanging out with Ang!!! Roddy sucks!
Route change in 5, 4, 3... :D
Skip26 08-07-2007, 10:19 AM Hey guys,
I'd love to join you on this swarm. I just have a couple concerns.
1) I'm still new, new as in April with moderate experience. My main concern is with keeping up in the twisties. I know you're all great people and wouldn't mind me slowing you down but realistically, how do you think that would be? Any other newbs?
2) With it being a weekend trip I will obviosuly need to bring clothes, etc. and I don't have any formal motorcycle luggage. Any suggestions?
My longest ride so far has been about a couple hours with one stop.
Kris
Slide 08-07-2007, 02:11 PM I can't speak for everyone... but...
I don't think you'd have any problems plus the group would wait after sections anyway (they waited for me!)... key is to get as many Hornets out there as possible!
As far packing stuff, just throw some fresh underwear in a backpack! I doubt there will be a dress code for dinner... :)
599Toronto 08-07-2007, 04:52 PM The dress code for dinner is wearing your fresh undies!!! 8)
The key to riding, group or otherwise, is to ride at your own pace. If you ride over your head you will just run into problems, which causes issues for everyone else on the ride. The group will wait, generally taking breaks at key intersections or rest stops along the way. The disadvantage of being last is generally you get the shortest break (ie. by the time the last person arrives, the first guys are ready to go again).
We'd love to have you along, but you do have to realize that two plus days of full riding is a long time. You'll need to judge this aspect of the ride for yourself.
Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Pepper 08-07-2007, 05:32 PM Ummm no one said anything before about fresh undies.... I'm going to have to re-think this :D
Route looks great, can't wait for the ride.
I never mind waiting for people who are a little slower. I'd rather that than someone getting hurt for riding beyond their abilities.
Bungee a backpack to the bike, that's when those hooks under the seat become very handy.
Two days is a lot of riding, perhaps over the next month try doing some longer rides and see how you feel before signing on.
599Toronto 08-07-2007, 05:56 PM Oh Pepper, you know that girls don't smell. This is why we never thought to mention this 'boy' rule to you... :D
599001 08-07-2007, 07:13 PM 599T: droll, adj.- quaintly humorous...
Skip: 1. Generally speaking, during a group ride, less experienced riders are at or near the rear, and every rider has a job. That job is to watch out for the person closest behind them (ie warning of road kill, and various hazards, as well as not getting tooo far ahead) that way no one gets lost, or left behind. It also allows for "spirited" riding farther up in the group.
Don't worry about it -worry causes stress, and stress kills joy- ride at your own pace, have a good time, and we'll watch out for you.
Don't let the word "twisties" intimidate you. All you need is a little experience, and this is a damn fine place to get it, and a great group to get it with! We don't usually ride much more than an hour or so without a strech/photo/gab/smoke stop. By the end of the weekend, you may find your riding and confidence level transformed. At the very least, you'll have a 1000km weekend under your belt, and lots of stories to tell your friends!
2. Travel light. I use a small back pack. The ones that have an extra set of straps (across beltline and chest) are more secure, and don't move around as much in the wind. Slide also uses a tank bag that has a clear map pocket on top . It's only a weekend, and what you bring will be hangin' off your back all day Sunday. All you need is the bare minimum, and some cash.
OK I'm getting down off the soap box now.
Skip26 08-08-2007, 10:01 AM Thanks guys.
I just realized I have a wedding on September 15th that I have to go to.
It's a piss off because I would like to join you and that, and September 1st (moving) are the only two weekends between now and October that are a problem.
Let me know if dates change or anything.
599001 08-08-2007, 06:38 PM D'OH! maybe next time...
I checked on the cottage, its $300 for the weekend, sleeps up to 8, and includes everything except towels and sheets. (?) I need your input soon, as he is booked solid till the weekend before our planned ride. I told him I'd call either way within a day or two,and drive up with a deposit if we go for it.
599Toronto 08-08-2007, 08:41 PM Ok with me. Thanks for doing the leg work on this one. I can mail you a cheque to help cover the deposit -- just let me know the amount.
599001 08-09-2007, 05:13 AM I'm not worried about the deposit, just a yes or no. We can split the cost that weekend. If the weather turns out to be bad, and we cancel the ride, I'll keep the cottage. ( either take the wife and pooch up, or a few friends, and party for the weekend)
Pepper 08-09-2007, 07:50 AM Works for me!
Slide 08-10-2007, 05:52 AM Sounds good. Are we on/near water? Need to know if I should bring my water-wings?
ukkev 08-10-2007, 10:46 AM Fine by me too :)
Thanks again for the leg work...
599001 08-10-2007, 07:36 PM The cottage rental is confirmed. I'll head up in the am with the deposit. Should have more details tomorrow. Yes, Slide, you'll need your water wings. I'm wearing mine up. No, really, they're made of kevlar, and double as upper arm protection in case of a "spill"...
599001 08-12-2007, 06:13 AM Cabin confirmed and deposit made. It's a little rustic, but will do the job nicely. It's the same cabin I was in a few years ago. There was someone in it at the time, so i couldn't get a good look, but if I remember right, it is fairly well equipped. We are at 14030 hwy 38, cabin #4. ( for Slide, and 599T, It's about a half a KM south of Sunsets restaurant on the other side of the road.) If you have any Questions , feel free to pm me, or just ask here.
599Toronto 08-12-2007, 08:38 PM Great! Thanks Roddy -- looking forward to it!!
Skip26 08-12-2007, 09:09 PM I'm so jealous...
Slide 08-13-2007, 10:47 AM Awesome, thanks 599001! :D
So what are we at now? 5 Horneteers!?! And 1 R6er?
ukkev 08-13-2007, 10:50 AM I think so :D
599001 08-14-2007, 06:32 PM Cool!
I had a chat with a customer today, who makes custom beer coolies, and I think I have convinced him to do a small run of swarm 07 coolies. He asked me to check back in a couple of days, to see what designs he's come up with. I'd like to have one for everyone who shows up, as a little reminder of the weekend.
ukkev 08-14-2007, 07:02 PM You guys rock!
"Drink Naked!"
Pepper 08-14-2007, 08:37 PM Holy cow! Boys in fresh underwear and drink coolies, I so can't wait for this ride :D
Really, all the planning so far looks awesome. I honestly can't wait.
For those in the area... I took the Hornet to Shannonville on the weekend and did a bunch of laps on the long track. That bike is a BLAST on the track!
599Toronto 08-15-2007, 04:28 AM :drool :drool :drool :drool :drool :drool :drool :drool
I was on the short track a year ago May with FAST. I would love to do a track day with the 599 sometime. Jealousy will get me nowhere.
Cool idea about the coolies. Please do your best to ensure the design captures a yellow 599 and makes some reference to the fact that yellow ones are the better, faster ones... :D
See you in September!!
Slide 08-15-2007, 05:29 AM Cool!

Nice one! Need something to keep my Fanta cold! [/img]
DaveB 08-19-2007, 08:01 PM I don't know if there is any room, or if you'll want to wait for someone as slow as me, but I have that weekend off from work and was hoping to go for a bit of a trip. I think I could make it down there for Saturday and a bit of riding on Sunday.

Expert insurance (http://xpertinsurance.com/)
599Toronto 08-20-2007, 04:35 AM I figure I would plant this seed early to open up some planning discussions for those heading east for this ride.
Correct me if I am wrong '001, but I believe that we have the cabin for both Friday and Saturday nights. Is it safe to assume that we'll all be heading there on Friday to optimize our riding time on Saturday? If so, are you planning an evening ride (after 5pm), or do you have plans to duck out of work early to get a head start on things?
Also, if your intentions are to head east in a group, where do you recommend meeting?
ukkev 08-20-2007, 07:01 AM Pepper and I live very close, so I'd imagine we'd meet, then ride to the north of the city to join you and Slide on highway 7?
Slide 08-20-2007, 07:21 AM Dave B: I think there's still room... we're at 6 and I think the cabin sleeps 8 – someone correct me if I'm wrong. Looks like we'll have a pretty solid itinerary both days so we can set up meeting points if you can't make it until later in the day... but if you have the weekend off, you should come on the Friday night!
Ukkev/Pepper/599Toronto: My plan was to get off work early because of the distance I have to travel. Heading northeast, I usually book it across the 407 to 7 then onto Port Perry... there is a pretty good route from there to Sharbot Lake.
599001 08-20-2007, 06:29 PM We have the cabin for Friday and Saturday nights. It sleeps eight (though I am not sure what the exact layout is as far as bed size, fold out couch etc., etc.). I was planning to come up after work on Friday evening. I will either come up Hwy 41 or 38. I may try to get the day off, or get off early. It sounds like Slide has a decent route planned out, everyone riding east could arrange to meet with him for the ride to the cabin. Still working on the coolies (I should have them by the end of the week)
Dave B: You are welcome to join as well if you wish, Friday night would work best logistically, however we could maybe meet at corner of 508 & 511 on Saturday (or anywhere else along the ride).
DaveB 08-23-2007, 08:36 PM Just when I started getting excited for this, it turns out I may have to work. I'll know for sure closer to the date, if I'm not working I will definitely be there. Don't save any beds/couches for me if other people want them, I don't mind the floor if everything else ends up being taken.

Angelina jolie (http://www.angelinajoliepics.com/)
599001 08-24-2007, 05:33 AM Let us know what happens. There is another possible rider in the same situation. Now that I'm thinking of it--YO! Darth Vrees, do you know what your work schedule is like for that weekend, yet?
On a side note, I picked up the coolies yesterday.
Darth Vrees 08-25-2007, 09:25 PM Still not 100% sure if I have that Saturday as a scheduled shift or not, but it looks like not so far, but I got served papers to be in court on the 14th in Orangeville! Long story short, over a year ago I seen a vehicle lose control and flip off the road landing in a ditch that was 2 feet deep with water upside down. I rushed to the aid of the driver who was face down in water and pulled him out, did the cpr thing but noticed as soon as I blew the first breath into him he was PLASTERED! My friends phoned 911 while I did my rescue thing, cops showed up along with ambulance and fire, all taking mine and my friends statements. Now I have to be a witness for the crown! Anyhow, if I show up in my riding gear and helmet you think the judge might be upset with me? :) It's at 9:30 in the morning so I should be ok I would think? I so badly want to go !!!!
599001 08-26-2007, 05:38 PM Git 'er done!!
Slide 09-04-2007, 09:47 AM Looking like around 23 C and sunny for the 15/16 weekend. Giddy up!!! :D
599001 09-04-2007, 06:44 PM About time someone posted, the suspense was killin' me... I wonder how darth vrees and dave b are looking for that weekend. Everybody else still in?
ukkev 09-04-2007, 10:19 PM Still in for sure...
Pepper 09-05-2007, 07:57 AM Yup still in.
599Toronto 09-05-2007, 11:53 AM Nothing better has come up, so ya, I guess so... :D
DaveB 09-06-2007, 05:43 PM I'm still waiting on work, I probably won't know till late in the week.

HERBALAIRE VAPORIZER (http://herbalairevaporizer.com/)
599001 09-09-2007, 03:53 PM only 432,000 seconds to go!
599Toronto 09-09-2007, 08:22 PM Any more thoughts regarding meeting time and location for those of us heading east on Friday?
Slide -- you indicated you were ditching work early. What time could you make it to the GTA by? I've booked Friday off, so my day is currently open.
599001 -- what time do you expect to be at the cabin?
ukkev/Pepper -- any thoughts?
Darth -- any change in your status?
599001 09-10-2007, 05:17 AM I booked the afternoon off work, but with my job, I never know what will happen. All I can say right now is that I plan to be there before dark...
Slide 09-10-2007, 07:21 AM I am planning on getting off work early on Friday. We could meet at the end of the 407 (there's a gas station, just a bit further on 7 East)??? If that's OK, I could be there for around 4:30pm.
The weather doesn't look that great – rain Friday & Saturday) but things can change!
ukkev 09-10-2007, 10:19 AM I'm stuck working 2-10.30pm this week, but will try two things.. either to take Friday off, or leave downtown around 9pm... might be a late night! :?
Pepper 09-10-2007, 12:56 PM I'm going to leave straight from work in Markham.
Will look into how far away the end of the 407 is and see if I can make that meeting point.
djamalt 09-10-2007, 01:23 PM I'm not even going on this trip and I'm still VERY excited about it. Sounds like it will be a blast. Take lots of pics and video if you can (you'd be surprised by what a camcorder stapped onto the pillion seat or gas tank can pick up). Make a lot of noise and ride safe my friends.
599Toronto 09-10-2007, 01:33 PM Sounds like a meeting spot at the east end of the 407 (which turns into Hwy 7), north of Pickering/Ajax will work.
I believe that there is a gas station between Brock Rd. and Westney Rd. on the north side of Hwy 7. Slide - is this the one you are thinking of? If so, could be a good spot to meet.
Slide -- Did you have a proposed route lined up?
Pepper -- When is your end of day? Depending on your location within Markham, you are likely 15 or 20 minutes from the proposed meeting location at most.
ukkev 09-10-2007, 01:56 PM Ok I took the day off :)
Can make the said garage for 4.30 also...
Slide 09-11-2007, 07:53 AM I think it is a Sunny Gas Station but it's basically 5 mins on 7 East after the 407 ends. It's the only gas station around them there parts.
I guess the route depends on what time we are meeting... upon further thought, probably the fastest way would be best? Whatever riders are up for?
ukkev 09-11-2007, 09:09 AM Yeah, maybe we should just head straight along the 7 to the cottage at that point?
Slide 09-11-2007, 10:11 AM Ya, it will be late in the day, so not a bad idea.
I actually think the fastest way is 401 > 4 > Simmons Road > Fisk Road > 18/4A > 38. Depends what everyone is in the mood for!
BTW... the weather is looking MUCH better! :D
Pepper 09-11-2007, 10:50 AM I work right at the 407, so it wouldn't be hard to jump onto it. I can't leave till about 4:30 though I don't think. Need to see if I can finish off some big projects before then.
599Toronto 09-11-2007, 10:59 AM Agreed -- Hwy 7 appears to be the best, most direct option.
Shall we say 5:00 for everyone, just to be safe?
I figure it'll be about a 3 hour ride, so don't forget your clear visors!!
Slide 09-11-2007, 11:06 AM Nice call on the clear visor! So 5pm then... can't wait!
599Toronto 09-12-2007, 03:33 PM As I see it we have the following people meeting at 5pm (as noted above), ready for the big departure from the GTA: 599T, Slide, ukkev and Pepper. Darth and DaveB are still potentials.
Meeting us at the cabin are 599001 and R6 Mark (I assume).
Things to remember to bring:
- clear visor.
- some warm clothes for the evening.
- sleeping bag or similar.
- cash for 599001 for cabin rental.
Did I miss anyone or anything on the 'need to bring' list?
599001 -- What are you thoughts about dinner on Friday night? Shall we arrive with full bellies and worry about food shopping on Saturday? Not sure what is in that area that would be open when we arrive (between 8-9, I would guess).
Should be a great weekend!! Can't wait!!
599001 09-12-2007, 08:16 PM Not sure what is open at that time, however the owner of the cabins has a pizza shop. I will check and see if he is open at that time. If so, I'm sure he would be happy to run us up some pizza, and a veggie sub  , or what-have-you... It sounds like Mark won't be able to make it until Sunday. In his place, I invited my friend Dan to join us. (Slide and 599T--this is my friend from Ottawa that I ride these roads with a couple times a year.) He and his wife just had thier first baby in April, so he's had little time to spare for riding this year. He will meet up with us in Perth on Saturday. There is a Restaurant in Perth, in an old stone mill, that kind of has an English pub look/feel... it would make a great background in a photo of a bunch of "Hornets". We could make that our lunch stop.
Any one have any ideas for a departure time on Sat.? 10-ish?
Slide 09-13-2007, 08:44 AM All sounds good! I'm pumped! Has everyone checked the weather? As my mother would say... "It looks glorious!"

Hey, and the Beer Store closes at 9pm and LCBO at 8pm... if anyone is interested...

Wouldn't hurt to grab a few drinks
Can't wait for tomorrow, I'm all packed up and ready to go. Will be at the gas station for 5 :)
599001 09-14-2007, 12:11 AM I should be at the cabin for around 5pm. It looks like the ride up could be a little damp. Let me know if you are running late, and need me to pick up any beverages, etc. Slide/599T, do you still have my cell # ? PM me and let me know if you need it. I will check here before I leave.
599Toronto 09-14-2007, 04:59 AM Let's keep our fingers crossed for a dry ride east this evening!! And yes '001, still have your number. I'll give you a shout when we make our stop for gas and/or dinner to give you a better idea of the ETA.
See you tonight!

It IS about time for them to start hibernating...but I agree...
599Toronto 09-18-2007, 09:17 AM Maybe we are too busy still riding... :ride

Pepper 09-18-2007, 10:51 AM What a great weekend.
The riding and company was worth every cold raindrop that hit me Friday night.
Can't wait to do it again.

This sounds like it requires a new post althogther - a kind of after the ride addendum.

599001 09-19-2007, 06:01 AM Another great 599 get togther (despite rain, iffy food, a gut-ache so bad I almost puked in my helmet, temperatures in the effin' 40s, and a short foray into a ditch-(thanks to Kev for not posting pics of that embarassing moment).
I'd do it all again in a heartbeat! The company was great, the roads awsome, and the overall ride a lot of fun. I forgot to bring my camera, but it turns out UKKev is quite the shutterbug. He, and the others should have lots of good pics to share...
Speaking of doing it again... shall we say mid June again next year?
Slide 09-19-2007, 07:40 AM What a great weekend! The riding was awesome, the company was good times... man, there were some laughs! The weather was a challenge but made the ride... I just hope that the circulation to my hands wasn't permanently effected!!! And the food... well, I think a purge is in order!
Thanks to everyone for an incredible time, can't wait for the next one... seems like ukkev wants to get out again in the next month! Could be a possibility depending on the weather!
I have a couple of pics... nothing that great and maybe this time I won't wait a month and a half to post them.
