So, I just picked up my brand new 06 599 and I was looking at what I could do to find myself more room to carry things on it, since after all my backpack just isn't enough if I want to go from city to city over night. I've gotten myself a tank bag, but I was thinking I would pick up some saddle bags...only problem that I can see is that the exhaust pipe comes right up where they would be. Has anyone had problems with their exhaust burning the bags or if I buy a good bag will that not be a problem?

Search, it's been discussed I a couple of places...

...But it isn't that big a deal. However, my opinion - go with the biggest tail bag and tank bag you can stomach, use those web bungee things for what can’t fit in the bags then...if you need more space...you are packing too much

Oh, and welcome!

BUT if you still want the panniers, I got some I gonna be selling...
(You can see why I’m not in sales! )

Go to Twistedthrottle.com, they have some great tail bags and the Givi setup you desire.

Burning or melting was not a problem with my Joe Rocket saddlebags. They do scuff up the heatshield and bodywork on the other side, though.

I have a Givi top box and rack. If you simply bought the Givi rack you could very safely carry any kind of panniers without harming your bike or the bags, because the side racks would help protect and hold everything.

Side racks, you teenager. Nothing sexy about racks on the sides.

Some of us are not terribly picky about location.

Heh heh, you said "location."

Alright one more question then...what about the things INSIDE the bags?

Pack your chocolates in the left bag and your skivvies in the right.

FWIW, I've seen a few articles describing roadtrips with a 599. Check out Road Runner about November or December of last year for one. Others were in odd online spots.

Anyway, pix always showed the right bag pretty tight to the exhaust (stock in every case) without any mention of problems. As for chocolates, be "cool" and eat 'em before you leave. 8)

Well, melted chocolate does have its appeal, it's more scorch marks on my underwear that I'm worried about.

I made it from Toronto Canada to Deals Gap with no problems, and many trips since.

Just make sure the bags are set high enough that they don't touch the pipe under the heat shield and you'll be fine.

I've got Oxfords, the bottom has some sort of heat protector bit on it too. So I'm extra set with the pipe.

Alright, thanks a lot guys... you've been fantastic.
Er, even that bit about racks!

Just out of curiosity - has anyone with the Mivv cones (or any aluminum) cans saddled it up? And if so, how did that go?
