View Full Version : 04 Low Fuel Indicator

I searched, but didn't find anything relevant. My SV650's low fuel light worked great. It would flash when getting low, and would illuminate solid when you were in the "reserve" range. My 599's low fuel indicator may or may not illuminate before fuel starvation. I've have to sputter to the side of the road a few times and move the valve to reserve. Lately, I've been using one of the trip odometers and refueling at 135-140 miles.

Is this typical, or is my bike unique? If so, I'll fix it. Otherwise, I'll keep using the odometer.

I have come across the same problem and had to do the same thing :? . Get to one side of the rode and switch to reserve and then start the bike again. I noticed that the light came on after running low on fuel in the reserve tank. I wonder if that is the way it works or is it a common problem?

yeah the low fuel light isn't that reliable. having the engine sputter is a better indication. Also, why do you guys pull over, switch to reserve and then restart the engine? When the engine starts to die put your hand down and switch it to reserve and continue on your way... no hassle.

In my case, I've never had time once it sputters. It always happens while deep in a curve, it stutters and dies instantly. I suspect that the fuel is pushed to the side, uncovering the inlet. You may not have that problem in the flatlands.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll continue on with the odometer thing.

Same problem here. Sometimes, I can feel the power drop more gradually and I have time to switch over and recover without pulling off to the side. But yeah, I don't push it past 140 unless I'm beggin' for issues.

i keep the trip odo, but i just wait til i have to switch to reserve before refueling. the highest i ever got it was near 200. its not hard to reach down and turn it, although it is kinda freaky to have to do it while hauling ass down the freeway...

The only two times that has happened to me the bike died completely one of them in a traffic light. switched to the reserve but the bike didnt start immediately so i had to push it to the side and let the traffic go....
after a few tries it started beautifully and rode to the nearest gas station. Im doing the odometer count too.

how about finding out how crappy the indicator light works the day you buy the bike and ride home! lol i ran out of gas on my 10 mile ride home in the dark. light came on half way, switched to reserve, putt putt die 1/2 mile from my house. the instant i spot any of that lazy orange light i get to the nearest chevron stat.

anyone know what amount of fuel is actually in the tank when the light is supposed to come on (assuming level ground)?

Just another reason the '06 > all... gas guage.

Um....I don't see the problem...you have two trip-odometers is so you can monitor your fuel level with one. Oh, and when it starts to run out of gas, it will start to cut on and off, just keep going and reach down and turn it to reserve, no big deal.

Mine seems to be working ok but once it comes on I can only ride about 2-3 miles before I have to switch to reserve. The odometer seems to be a better indicator. When I get to 140+ miles I go straight to the nearest station.

Um....I don't see the problem...
It's just odd, you know? I think everyone's found the work around. But it's just strange that the low fuel light could easily be called the "no fuel" light. :P

I'm with Sid here. I always refill around the 130 mark. In a year and a half I only missed the "deadline" twice... both times felt the bike start losing "go" so I reached down and switched to reserve.

The "low fuel light" does not go off after you switch to reserve because it's there to remind you that you need to fill up. How easy would it be to forget that you're in reserve mode and run out of gas for sure?

Stop yer whining...apparently none of you have had the joy of owning an old VW Bug...figure out where your petcock is....how I love the odd occasion where I get to slide that word into actual conversation, I've tried forcing it before but it just doesn’t feel right, use of petcock must come naturally...anyway...reach down 2x or 3x every ride and feel around for your petcock...use the Force...get intimate with your petcock...make it an extension of yourself...don't be shy...just ride around fondling your petcock... it's not a crime but don’t flaunt it... and always practice safe petcock - no glove - no petcock love...explore the details of the petcock, how it moves, the way it feels in different positions...maybe even...if you are adventurous...tease it by setting it to OFF while riding...experience how she protests under your will...get personal with your petcock...then...whenever your bike does the least little sputter...coyly indicating it’s desire for some hot swap petcock action...hit it like a piñata...no thinking about it, no hesitation, no lube...foreplay is for when you two are alone in the garage...in this moment...the petcock is demanding to be taken like the object it is...reach down and grab with authority...make that petcock do to your bidding...impose your will, don’t get all emotional - the petcock is there to serve you and your insatiable desire for more fuel...then...without hesitation...look for a station so you can fill up...and maybe...if you’re like that...a quick “Who’s your daddy???” and post petcock session smoke.

Just make sure you respect the petcock...put it back the way you found it...for the petcock’s love is a fickle one...a jealous one... the petcock craves attention and if ignored...you my find that one day...when you reach for your...petcock...the petcock will have become the Master...and leave your spirit...flaccid.

And only then will then realize...that your petcock has always been the Master...and you...have always been...slave to...the petcock.

I had this problem several times and then just started riding with the reserve tank on all the time. If you do see the light I believe you still have .8 gallons of fuel.

This way I never have sputtering in turns on low fuel. Keep track of your mileage!!!

petcock
21 times in a post- I am impressed my friend! Nice work!

By the way, if you think this is humorous, you should have been at the dealer the day I picked up the pieces I ordered to rebuild the petcock on my CL350. The rubber washer inside, in Honda's own words, is labeled "packing - cock" right on the bag it comes in. The parts guy and I were both laughing like a pair of 15 year olds!

figure out where your pet cock is. and you...have always been...slave to...the pet cock.

Thanks for helping me buy that LCD monitor I've been wanting. Beer spray shorted out the old CRT.

That's my winter project...remove the PET COCK and figure out how to get it to work properly. Maybe open up the ORIFICES a bit. Or maybe just keep living with my highly developed PET COCK love skills.

I even refrained from using the term petcock, referring to it as valve, and the thread still degraded.

We're a hopeless bunch... :P

I think we should add a "Best of..." section to the forums.
The Petcock prose should be the 1st item.

Thanks RND that cheered up my day.

btw: I just ran out of gas on one those big freeway flyovers, and was fumbling around wildly for my "you know what". Should have practiced.

I didn't have to practice when I forgot to turn the petcock on today, no sir. Rnd's words carry true wisdom. After my first low fuel incident, I memorized that location.

Indeed. I found myself practicing on my ride tonight. Now I can do it, gloved, in the dark. :naughty

You wouldn't mean one of these would you...'72 SuperBeetle. It was originally my wife's. We've had it for 10 years...she got it when we first started dating. It's in the middle of being...ummm...spiced up a little bit. She still has the ORIGINAL factory radio in perfect working condition and the original factory fan below the dash...you know what they are worth these days? The work has been halted at the moment b/c of my family situation. But, she's had a brand new engine dropped in her, all new interior to a high white leather, and has been stripped of paint and primed. New dash, window handles, chrome etc has been ordered from Wolfsburg and is sitting in a box ready to be installed. Floorpan is immaculate with no rust or NO holes (know how rare that is??). We're going to convert it to a 12 volt electrical system as well. Anyway...I'll quit rambling...sorry to hijack the thread...

Yep it's air cooled. Those are NOT the restoration pics!! Those are the pre-restoration pics.

It looks nothing like that now...right now all you see is primer. But it's pretty white inside.
