I'd like to have the protection of a leather jacket, but I'd like to actually use it the Houston weather ( It's still above 90F in Houston and humidity is always high)

Any good recommendation on perforated leather,or is even that too hot ?

I'd rather not go mesh, only if you guys dissuade me from leather

Thanks

IMHO a light colored "perfed" leather jacket is just as cool as mesh...

I have a Frank Thomas Strike suit. It's perforated and is reasonably cool (for some value of "cool") in hot weather. It's designed to be worn with the pants from the same suit but I suppose you could buy it separately.

The leather is of good quality and it is well-armored. It's a good buy - I'd get another without a moment's hesitation.

Just use some "wicking" layer under it...cheap cool max shirts from Target work great.

In my experience perforations work best with speed and dry air. If you are going to commuting in traffic or lots of stoplights, you will be too hot.

Are talking body temperature or look factor here ?
I'm sure perf leather are good when moving but I wonder if that works well in slow traffic/ humid weather.

Well, looks of course! No, what many people don't get is that part of staying cool is keeping the radiated heat off of you...the infrared from the sun passes right thru the mesh, but the leather provides some insulation. As long as you are getting a little air thru, the wicking layer will keep you dry and cool.

I'm in Orlando, so maybe a little humidity 'round here, my leather is still just as cool as my mesh when at speed and I don't heat up as fast when at a stop. Again, MHO but that carries a lot of weight with me (high opinion of myself so to speak) (or at least not warmer enough to give up the protection :thumbsup )

Now if they could create a free flow air helmet, life would be great. Some days I go out with my MX helmet and some goggles...but a bug in the face sucks so only when heading off downtown which is mostly low speed.

Wherever it feels hot are usually the points of contact between the skull and the inner padding. If you removed these spots, the helmet would probably be floating around your head :?

Allright,
I *think* I have it down to three jackets:
AGV Aero Sport 2 Hybrid (http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=null&catId=402&productId=prod1100185&leafCatId=40206&mmyId=)
AGV TLX Air Flo (http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=35487942&store=Outlet&catId=402&productId=prod1001342&leafCatId=40206&mmyId=)
AGV Breeze Perforated Jacket (http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=null&catId=402&productId=prod1010094&leafCatId=40206&mmyId=)

Seems like a good compromise of coolness (temperature wise)/ safety / price..
What do you guys think ?

I like the second one as far as looks go. As far as coolness (in temps), the last one seems like it'd be better for hotter weather.

My thoughts exactly, even though I don't mind the look of either one, they look pretty nice to my novice eyes.
I think I'll order soon, will let you know.

im looking to get a new jacket, and living in texas definitely need perf leather. so who out there has a perf leather jacket, and do you like it? would you recommend it? just looking for some feedback here.

I have and I do and I would

Also have a mesh jacket, but harbor no illusions about how woefully under protected I am when wearing it. I'd use the leather on all but the days where I'll need to stuff it in my back pack or hottest or rain expected days. (I try not to ride ever in the rain, not a big fan of doubling down on danger - especially when the payout doesn't change or is less //for me//)

I got a perf leather jacket as mentioned in this thread ( the AGV Breeze one). Good looks, several pockets ( inside and outside), perfectly vented on chest and back, nicely manufactured (all zippers are still OK after 6-7 months ; leather is flexible yet resistant).
The shoulder and arms pads are great and feel protective enough for a road hit.

Realistically, when it's 85 F + and humid, you'll still be hot if you're stuck in traffic, but that'll get better when you start rolling as air will easily pass through.Your helmet typically is the hottest part of all( mini air fan anyone ?).

Overall,I'm with Rnd, I would not take the risk of riding with anything less than a full face helmet and perf leather.

Vented white helmets are much cooler in hot weather.

I use one of these in the hot SoCal months:

ICON Pursuit Perforated Leather Jacket (http://www.newenough.com/closeouts/leather_suits_jackets_and_pants/icon/pursuit_perforated_leather_motorcycle_jacket.html)

$180 at New Enough and other places if you do a Google search. I have a white one. It does vent as well as the safe-as-tissue-paper Joe Rocket mesh textile jacket I use to wear until I came to my senses. It's fully perforated.

The only minus I'd give it is the stupid zip off sleeves feature. WTF?

I am on my second one of these. The first protected me when I slid across the cheese grater streets we have. My cordura overpants were absolutely shredded and didn't hold the armor in place. My leather jacket had some scuffs and a hole in a sleeve. Totally convince me that leather gear that holds armor in place is the way to go. I am building up my gear stash with that in mind.

I chose this one because at the time it was one of the only perforated leather jackets available in colors other than black. That made it seem like a no brainer.

Like the white with gray and the full gray ones... how hard is it to keep the white one clean?

AND must agree, with the sleeves off, it looks rather dorky. Going all the way up to be a vest MAY have made more sense...

The white one I wear looks better dirty. I'd never clean it unless I spilled something on it.

That's the same thing that's kept me from the Pursuit. Not just how dorky it is zipped off, but just that I'd have to answer that question all the time.

"Why is there a zipper there?"
"...well. The sleeves zip off."
"WHAT?"

It's just a bit much. Even if I can get one that matches my yellow monster.

I just picked up a Dainese Laguna Seca perf leather jacket in white. It is almost as cool as my Alpinestars mesh jacket when I am moving.

And MUCH cooler than my old FrankThomas leather jacket.

I got the same jacket, 'cept in black. White jacket on a yellow bike just screams... :disco :hump :banana

You get the idea. It's a wonderful jacket up to about 90 degrees or so. If it's much above that or I'm sitting in traffic a LOT, I'd rather have my Vanson Vent Max 3.
