View Full Version : The longest tank?
cybil hamartia 10-02-2007, 08:26 PM hey, y'all.
the bike i had before i got the 599 was a 1980 cb750. it had all sorts of strange issues, including a reserve that didn't work. it had a range of about 115 miles before it would run out of gas. i ran out of gas all the time on that thing.
as a result, getting the 599 was great. 200 miles between fillups! first i would always fill up when the reserve came on, but over time i got to pushing it more and more. i think, before today, 4.2 gallons was about the most i had gotten in the tank. today i got ... 4.43 gallons. 232 miles.
probably of relatively little interest to most people, but i'm sort of a dork that way.
cheers!

Skier 10-02-2007, 10:36 PM A buddy of mine has a 650 Dakar with two auxiliary gas tanks. I think he can haul around more than 10 gallons of fuel at once.
jfeagin 10-04-2007, 09:20 AM That's pretty good range, Cybil. I've been getting about 48mpg, so I figure that's worth 216 miles to dry. But the "reserve" graphic on the '06 is just disturbing enough that I haven't really pushed it, yet.
JHenley17 10-04-2007, 09:29 AM I can't get anywhere near that. The longest I've ridden left me to put in 3.7 at fill-up and I got just to 160 miles on that. Once the fuel guage starts doing its dancing thing, I get a little scared.
jfeagin 10-06-2007, 09:17 PM Inspired by this thread, I've been pushing past the fear to see what I get on the "reserve" gallon. So far, I've done about 24 miles since the scary graphic started up.
But that 160 isn't too far off my usual mpg. For 3.5 gallons, I normally get 165 to 170 miles. But I'm not the most aggressive rider around, either.
smitters 10-07-2007, 09:29 AM I filled her up last night and put in almost 3.5 gallons. I only managed to get 127 miles out of the tank. I originally wasn't going to fill up, but it died while I was riding down the road. I just switched to reserve and went straight to a gas station. I would like to ride with the people that get 200 miles to a tank. I think it would be interesting to see the different riding styles that make the difference of 80 miles a tank.

dabinche 10-07-2007, 10:58 PM trick is to keep the revs low and be in a higher gear
I try to make it a thing to get 200miles before I need to fill up. Normally I only get to about 180 when the dance starts and fill about 3.5gallons
jfeagin 10-08-2007, 03:03 PM I tend to upshift these days around 4.5k to 5k and cruise right about 4k. For general purpose riding, keeping the neighbors happy, etc.
Today I put in 4.2 gallons with 195 miles out of that. That's about 46.5mpg with some "spirited" riding in the last few weekends.

how difficult was it to mount the hard cases and can a passenger still ride easily with them on?
cybil hamartia 10-17-2007, 10:18 AM how difficult was it to mount the hard cases and can a passenger still ride easily with them on?
sorry for the delay in responding ... not hard at all--nothing to really remove, just swapping a few bolts. and yes, for my most frequent passenger--my girlfriend--riding is much easier with them on. it gives the back a bit more 'room'--she can hold onto the handles on top of the cases, and if i put a top case on, she has a backrest.
if you're looking for more specific information, let me know.
best,
