That's me. I'm the guy in an apartment without much of any tools. That fella who didn't have a handyman for a Dad, so I can barely figure things out for myself. And now, with my undertail, hugger, clear alternatives light and LED license plate lights, I wait for my fix-it-all buddy to be available.

LE SIGH. :P

You are not alone. And my dad IS KNOWN to be a great handyman... and then there's me. I installed a dimmer in the bathroom and the adjoining outlet stopped working. :?

The only thing that I learned from my Dad was this: "If you don't know what you're doing, fess up and find help." This only because he rarely would fess up until things were seriously out of whack.

In my depression, I cleaned the bike up for prep work.

I suppose I could start asking installation questions, too... time to search before asking!

My dad had ALL the tools: cherry picker, welding stuff, cutting stuff, several big red tool boxes on wheels full of stuff, pneumatic stuff, all kinds of stuff. All he ever let me do was HOLD THE DAMN LIGHT for him. Although, I do remember him letting me scrape some tar off of a piece of metal that he used to cover the transmission (I guess it was part of the car's floor) in his 1940 Chevy. Which is black, but fixing to be red and lowered - God rest my dad's soul.

That reminds me of one of my many favorite quotes from Fight Club: "We are a generation of men raised by women."

And don't worry. I'm laughing with you, not at you. I'm terrified of working on anything electrical. My wife has been bugging me lately to get a digital thermostat for our house. :run

Can't wait till I can buy a house or rent one or an apartment where my garage isn't a communal thing. I have very limited tools at this point. Can do simple mods, change the oil and coolant (Thanx to Steve's videos), and screw a few picture frames into the walls. I miss real tools. My landlord saw my tool box and laughed at me. It was a very humbling moment.

You can't learn to swim without jumping in the pool. Just dive in. Even if you screw up you at least will learn what not to do next time.

My tool box started as a cheap Craftsman knock off set. And it just keeps growing from there as I buy what I need.

Four hours and the 599 is now setup with an undertail, hugger and clear integrated taillight. There were a few scares along the way, but overall it went unbelievably smoothly. I'll take some shots later.
