View Full Version : R1 or GSX-R1000 as a 1st bike...
LeatherWings 10-28-2007, 06:58 PM I was perusing the sportrider.com (http://www.sportrider.com) site and found a forum topic that I think you guys may find interesting. Here is this guy's post:
1320racer:
"I am currently in the market for a bike, I've never rode on anything except for a pocket bike once. I'm more interested in a GSX-R1000 or R1 but I've been told that it would be better to stick with a GSX-R600 or R6.
I know that the more powerful bikes arent for a beginner rider but I know that I will be looking to upgrade as soon as I get the hang of how to control the power of a 600.
I currently own a 700+hp car that goes low 10s in the 1/4 mile so I am not afraid of going fast but I think I am controled enough to not push the bike more than my limit.
I know that having a fast car doesnt mean I can control a fast bike but my plans would be to take the bike to the drag strip once I am comfortable with it and this is one of my main concerns since I dont want to be looking to sell a 600 6mths after I buy it for a 1000.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated."
Unless this guy takes the advice of the respondees, I see a laid down/wrecked R1 or GSXR1000 for sale in the near future... :?

JHenley17 10-28-2007, 07:28 PM It's that cocky attitude that gives many riders a bad name... the guy's never ridden and he thinks he can handle a 1000 like a pro in a month? He'd get bored with the 600 just because it's a 600, I think, and I still don't think he'd really know how to control it very well in any less than a year.
robkb 10-28-2007, 07:41 PM Cars lean the wrong way.
Add a dead rider to the wrecked R1, that's what I see in the future.

+1
It's really sad actually...
rndthought 10-29-2007, 08:39 AM Hay, as long as he takes it easy and keeps it low in the rev band...
I think I've seen some of y'all type that...seems sane enough advice...
Loving the avatar pic Lance, bad ass!
robotribe 10-29-2007, 10:23 AM Hey, I've been playing Starfox on Nintendo for several years and feel pretty confident in my quick reflexes and maneuvers. Do you guys think I'm ready to fly a real jet fighter? I really don't want to waste money taking lessons on a single-prop Cesna at the local municipal airport cuz I know I'll be ready for the F-22 Raptor really soon.
Plus, the F-22 is so badazz, yo!
02KBGT 10-29-2007, 05:13 PM LOL... Yea, He aint gonna make it.... I have fast cars and a fast bike...And how someone could relate the two... I have no idea... Dead man walkin
Transient 10-29-2007, 10:11 PM You see things like this all the time. My first post looking for a bike was regarding the Daytona 675 and I had the people telling me that I was a complete moron. I believed at the time that I had the self control to survive.
The same group also said the 599 would be too powerful. Bearing in mind the specs, I think to myself that a more powerful bike wouldn't be the nightmare folks made it out to be. That said, I don't regret the choice for a moment.
It's the responsibility of the community to offer sane advice and cut the criticism. Who knows how many riders have asked for an opinion and not listened because of delivery?

Oh, and don't ask for advice if you don't want to hear the answers.

I had a very similar experience on another board where I tried to tell my crash story - hoping other new-to-mid-experienced riders would take a second and think and remember their training... and not get too confident too early.
What ultimately happened was I got labeled everything under the sun, even though I was doing 30mph in a posted 20mph turn. A little quick, but hardly dangerous or irresponsible. I was treated like I was lane-splitting at 120mph without a shirt or a helmet and I had caused a bus full of babies to crash into the side of a mountain. At one point a woman chimed in, telling me, and I quote:
"I blame your mother for not beginning earlier with training in personal responsibility, integrity, accountability and corporal punishment. Seriously."
Come on, now... this woman doesn't know me from Adam, and says that? I was on a two-lane back road all by myself. I didn't even get banged up all that badly, so no one else was at risk.
There's a time and a place for everything. No one felt worse about what happened than I did - I didn't need to hear that over top of it. Especially when I was just trying to help.
Needless to say I don't post there anymore. Anyone think they know the board I am talking about?
Slide 10-30-2007, 11:02 AM GXR1000? R1? What a pussy. He really should get the new Hayabusa. Perfect for beginners... they should really use them for the MSF courses.

Wow, some stable characters up in that barn.
02KBGT 10-30-2007, 03:34 PM Yea.. Dont know if everyone has noticed..But on the internet, its amazing how perfect people ride , and how much they know..lol grain of salt..
But thats still WAY to much bike for your first..
rndthought 10-30-2007, 03:42 PM I'd add air shifters and some NOS...Wheeeee!
02KBGT 10-30-2007, 03:46 PM  you kill me rnd
I'd add air shifters and some NOS...Wheeeee!
The problem with nos is that the bottle empties... you need to slap a turbo charger on that beast!
When I was looking for my 599 in the dealers websites, I was surprised by the lack of beginners bikes in the US.
In Europe you cannot mess with a big bike with a brand new license. Your bike has to be limited to 34bhp until you get 2 years of experience. New bikes are easy to limit and there's a big market of already limited bikes.
Although it's annoying it really makes sense and saves the lives of the irresponsible. I was chatting with another rider who was learning on a CBR600RR and I was freaking out.

Maybe the lives of the irresponsible are really not worth saving...
...JUST KIDDING!!! :tomato
...but really tho, ever heard of Darwin?
I do agree that something, perhaps even legal, should be done to prevent this type of behavior or at least encourage safer riding practices.

I stand corrected. (but that's dual turbos right?)
As for beginner bikes...I think there are lots of 'em...But all you need is one. Often people look at this like the first bike they buy must be perfect as it will be the last one...and the reality is more like you'll destroy it. And if lucky, you'll survive to purchase another
JHenley17 10-31-2007, 09:18 AM I'll be honest, I didn't get the Ninja 250 because it was ugly as hell. If the new bike had been out five months ago, I probably wouldn't be here talking to you guys, though I'd probably have a pretty scratched up bike.
rndthought 10-31-2007, 12:21 PM ...I'd probably have a pretty scratched up bike.
Fair enough to guess but for chance none of us would be here...
BTW, I hear "chicks" dig scratched up bikes...especially GSXR's held together with plastic zip ties! Wheeee!
dabinche 11-02-2007, 07:00 PM I've watched Rambo I, II, and III a zillion times and now am a warfare killing machine. They should send me over to the middle east and I'll single handedly wipe out them terrorist.
I'd add air shifters and some NOS...Wheeeee!

This was my first bike 650cc single that made 33hp on a good day. And could hit 130km/h... downhill... with the wind at my back! But she taught me to ride, forgave most of the stupid mistakes that I made. And helped me fall in love with the sport.
"It's your first bike, not your last. And you'll look way cooler scraping pegs on a 250 then you will wobbling around on a 600."
