View Full Version : Does this make any sense?
ophee 10-30-2007, 05:51 PM Alright, so i've got a bike here. black, 2006 599, with 30,000 miles on it. What would you guys say this bike can be sold for? I'm really really new to the 'bike world', and i'm constantly hearing that avg yearly mileage is around 1000. Is it a bad thing that many miles were put on a short period of time, or is it just like a vehicle who's high mileage is all highway miles (good thing)? Any advice/price quotes on this thing? As far as condition goes, it is in good condition, other than a crack around the trim of the bike. I'll attach a picture. Thanks a lot for all your help guys!!
It is possible to put 28000 miles on that bike in 2 years or less. I, for one, commute to work everyday, year 'round. I got it with 1300 miles on it in May of 2006, I now have about 13,000 miles on it. If I commuted double the distance, I'd have lots more miles.
As far as what it would be worth... I'm not sure. At least 4 grand, I'd say. How much did you pay for it?
ukkev 10-30-2007, 06:00 PM I'd say around $5000...
Maybe a mechanic can tell if the mileage is genuine by looking at the chain wear, tires, foot pegs etc... obviously this will effect the value to some extent.
ophee 10-30-2007, 06:11 PM I picked it up for 2300. Sort of tricked the auctioneer. Long story short, it's mine... and just sitting here.
I think i'll take it to a mechanic like you said... get some info out of him, as i obviously don't understand anything about bikes. But let me tell you, this thing is a beauty. I have to open and close the garage door to take a look at it every now and then... SEXXAYYYYY
ukkev 10-30-2007, 06:17 PM Perhaps jumping the gun here a little before the bike is examined, but sounds /looks like you might have got a great deal...
Them pipes look in need of a clean :? :D
02KBGT 10-30-2007, 06:23 PM Dont think it matter how you slice it...If the bike runs and is streetable without any problems, then you stole it..lol Very good deal IMO...28,000 miles, although alot in 1 year, Is still low milage... Nice pickup and welcome..
599001 10-30-2007, 06:37 PM 2300?!! damn! Even if it needs a little tlc, I feel sorry for the person on the other end of that deal. Nice score!!
ukkev 10-30-2007, 06:45 PM Any ideas how the crack got there?
ophee 10-30-2007, 08:22 PM That's the problem, i don't get the detail/contacts of the previous owner. Nothing. Sold as is. After all taxes, it was 2500. So this is good new for me? Heh, anyone else? I'm afraid of taking it out, i might sell it to my neighbor. He's a hardcore biker. Should i offer him a deal? Make some money, or what. Thanks for all the quick feedback guys.!
I'd say offer him a deal and still easily walk away with an extra two grand. I'd say around $4000-4500 would be a good deal for someone else while still getting you a nice profit. It's in good shape, but that is a lot of miles for a newer bike and it could probably use a little tlc from whoever buys it. I'd say don't mess with it, sell it as it is and enjoy your profit...start messing with it and the money can get away from you quick. Let the new owner do as much or little with it as he/she wants. Just my .02c. Enjoy!!!
ophee 10-30-2007, 10:31 PM I had 2 guys willing to go for 4000, but giving me a hard time. At one point i was thinking, "man, i won't be able to sell this thing for 3 even" I guess not huh??!
yeroC 10-31-2007, 01:05 PM The bottom line is what do YOU want to do. What are your intentions?
Do you really want to learn ro ride and enjoy it. Are you really into the
bike thing?? If so, keep it 'cos you won't be finding anymore deals like
that.
If you're really kinda iffy on the whole motorcycling thing, then flip it and
count your money. Simple. But at least get a kelly or nada blue book
or go to website and check for yourself. Show the guys giving you a
hard time about 3200 how much an '06 599 is really worth.
rndthought 10-31-2007, 02:07 PM The bottom line is ....
Hummm, the Force is strong with you... :thumbsup
Unfortunately, it requires a zone of logic for proper execution - emotion, irrational thought, greed, these are the ways of the Dark Side...and lazy questions.
Yero I like where you are going but, IF i showed you that your Honda 599 or whatever was really worth double what you paid, would you have still bought it? I mean for double? I think that is the wrong road and not what he is after. You pulled out your wallet because compared to the other things you wanted, it had the best cost ratio FOR YOU.
I think his question is quite literally "Hay guys, how much can I get for this thing? Cause if I can get a pretty penny for it, I'm taking the cash..."
It's funny. If you don't "want" something you'll price it accordingly (talking about buyers now) and showing someone who really doesn’t' want something in the first place that it is actually worth what you say it is...still won't change what it's worth to someone who doesn't want it. Ahhh, what?
Dumber: Hay want to buy this painting from me?
Dumb’s Wife: It’s ugly.
Dumb: Ahh I don’t know it is kinda ugly... how much you asking, a dollar?
Dumber: No! Dude! It has been certified to be worth $100! How about $50?
Dumb: Deal!!! $50 it is!
Dumb’s Wife: Idiot. It is ugly, tell him to fuck off.
Dumb: But it’s worth $100 and I’m getting it for $50! I made like $50!
Dumb’s Wife: But it’s still ugly.
Dumb: But...
Dumb’s Wife: I want a divorce.
I'd say, surely a not too lazy person could find a starting value for the bike somehow, but I'd spend more efforts on finding a pool of buyers that actually want that specific bike...then it's all about how motivated the seller is.
This all breaks down a bit if you run into an "opportunistic" buyer who looks for gaps in what something is priced at and what he knows he can sell it for...but if you are gonna be one of them...it's best to know what you can sell it for BEFORE you pull the trigger on the purchase...kinda sketchy operating with a "sounds like a good deal" mind set... lest one finds themselves on the internet trying to figure out exactly what they got themselves into...
That's all for free. You want me to start crunching numbers, I wanna cut of the profits.
Pepper 10-31-2007, 02:12 PM High milage isn't always a bad thing if the bike has been well cared for. I'm just under 30,000 kms on my 599. Don't know what that is in miles.
But if I were buying a used bike, I'd be more weary of let's say an 04 with only 1,000 miles on it. While my bike gets it's oil changed, and other love, that low milage 04 just sat unattended in someone's garage...
Too bad you can't get maintenace records on the bike.
JohnK 11-01-2007, 08:44 PM In april I bought 1975 Honda 750 four with 13732 miles on it and put just shy of 2000 miles on it before buying a 2000 Kawasaki ZR7 with 13000 miles on it this past June. I have put over 5000 more miles on it so far.
Now I am looking at 599s.
Like others have said, how it was cared for is more important than the miles on the clock. At least with in reason.
I think you got a great deal.
John
