I'm just curious to see the background of our group.

If there's a major catagory missing, let me know.

I teach automotive technology at a post-secondary auto tech school. My main course teaches electricity, but I also teach fuel and ignition systems, computerized engine controls, and performance modifications. Prior to teaching, I spent 9 years as a tech, and I am still currently an ASE master technician.

I'm a 7th grade history teacher. If it paid twice as much, I'd realy, really, really, really love it. But, it's actually the highest paying job I've ever had. This is my first year and I am always busy working on something. My after school hours and my weekends are spent making lesson plans, gathering resources, thinking up things to do in class, making tests. I try to do the very best I can on all of my lessons, so NEXT year I can relax a bit and just do pretty much the same thing I'm doing this year (maybe tweak things a bit). The kids are wild as hell (Mississippi Delta/Critical Needs Area), and I find it challenging. I could go on and on about how everything I've learned about classroom management doesn't seem to be working as far as getting them to settle down and be quiet. Truthfully, though, they're not as bad as I was. For instance, no one's pulled the fire alarm yet or shot fireworks inside the school, or glued the lockers shut or the desks to the floor. I've broken up two fights (that was a first), and paddled 5 kids (ages 13-15; three were bigger than me). My girlfriend used to always say, "Patience is a virtue." I took it to mean, "You're not getting some any time soon." So, I've never been very fond of situations requiring patience. But, I'm trying. Riding my 599 helps!

So basically 599 riders are, on the whole, waaaaay too edumicated. At least that's what i've learned from the poll responses so far. 8) And even though i'd look to be the exception as a 'construction/remodeling worker' I, too, received a business degree from UNC. (That's all the education in a class room setting i could stand at one time.)

Sounds like an ad for Hornets. Something along the lines of 'people who know better choose Honda (Hornets).' ;)

If you sum up 'education' (which is probably a good percentage government) and 'government' it appears most of the jobs are generated by the govt instead of private industry.

just an observation.

Well, over the course of our history, government has grown hugely in terms of many economic indicators such as percentage of GDP. So no real surprise, there. What would be interesting to know is how many "government" employees are working directly for an agency and how many work for a contractor.

But did you notice the single greatest percentage is engineering?

"Honda: THE choice of discriminating engineers!" :D

I with my family own a moderatley successfull irrigation and landscaping
business. We employ around 20 people and have been in business since
'86. I run the irrigation side of the company. I/we design and install
irrigation systems for gov't, commercial and residential properties. We
have roughly 500 active clients and have had as many as 1000. I went to
high school in Queens NY and did my last year in VB. Attended Tidewater
Community College and Norfolk State University. I'm 38, been married
for 14 yrs, into music, martial arts and motorcycles. I like cognac,
whisky, and guinness and love good food and cool people. Used to be
kinda wild as a teen, but definitely more of a zen approach to life now
except every once in a while some random asshole will need a public
ass whippin'. Oh and i'm a saggitarius. There, that's pretty much all
anyone needs to know about Corey aka yeroC!!

I'm in IT sales and consulting, mainly with accounting software (Sage Accpac and Microsoft Dynamics NAV) but to a lesser degree consult and sell hardware/software environments (servers, remote connections, security, etc.).

I like it, like working with my clients to improve their business and processes. Pay is good too!

You can't spell Geek with out EE.

This wasn't an easy poll to populate, but I figured from the conversations, we were predominantly engineers, myself included (mechanical eng'r)

I'm working on my master's in structural engineering, which is an offshoot of civil. It's all about optimization and balancing designs. And that's why I like the 599... it's a good, solid, balanced design, with nothing that it doesn't need. Except that ginormous muffler.

The Tacoma Narrows bridge was great for engineers. It forced everyone to consider dynamic response to a cyclic loading, and it looked really neat as it failed. And really, that baby took a huge amount of distortion and strain before it finally went down.

Oh, and civils can out-drink any other kind of engineer.

(Oh my, trash talking :nerd 's only here)
Ok well are there any Enviro or Chemical E's here...if not then we'll trash talk them...

Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"

The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."

The first engineer nodded approvingly, "Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit."

Overcapacity
To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

An engineer was crossing a road one day when a frog called up to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess".

He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week."

The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you and do ANYTHING you want." Again the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.

Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess, that I'll stay with you for a week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"

The engineer said, "Look I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that's cool.

Sachi, just for you:

http://www.successunlimited.co.uk/humour/lawyer.htm

***** Just a sample, who knew lawyers were so funny? *****

A lawyer married a woman who had previously divorced ten husbands. On their wedding night, she told her new husband, "Please be gentle; I'm still a virgin." "What?" said the puzzled groom. "How can that be if you've been married ten times?"

"Well...
Husband #1 was a Sales Representative; he kept telling me how great it was going to be.
Husband #2 was in Software Services; he was never really sure how it was supposed to function, but he said he'd look into it and get back to me.
Husband #3 was from Field Services; he said everything checked out diagnostically but he just couldn't get the system up.
Husband #4 was in Telemarketing; even though he knew he had the order, he didn't know when he would be able to deliver.
Husband #5 was an Engineer; he understood the basic process but wanted three years to research, implement, and design a new state-of-the-art method.
Husband #6 was from Finance and Administration; he thought he knew how, but he wasn't sure whether it was his job or not.
Husband #7 was in Marketing; although he had a nice product, he was never sure how to position it.
Husband #8 was a psychiatrist; all he ever did was talk about it.
Husband #9 was a gynaecologist; all he did was look at it.
Husband #10 was a stamp collector; all he ever did was...God, I miss him!
...But now that I've married you, I'm really excited!"

"Good," said the lawyer, "but, why?"

"Duh; you're a lawyer. This time I know I'm gonna get screwed!"

Wow... how does one follow THAT up....?

I'm inbetween categories. Architect... not really construction and not really engineering. We draw the pretty pictures and hire the engineers to run the numbers. I know just enough about both trades to pretend that I know what the hell I am talking about.
