For anyone in the SoCal Area, there is a Tamale Festival every year in Indio Dec 1-2 (near Palm Springs). I will be going with my wife: unfortunately she won't get on the back of my bike so I will have to settle for driving her Audi.

There are some nice twisty, turny routes you can take to get there (I think the good way ends up on SR74) and yummy food at the end of the ride.
