Maybe I'm alone on this but I had to make a thread about it because ive been sucked into the vortex of addiction to this game for a couple weeks now. I've been playing real guitar for a year or so now and this game is probably more fun to me becuase of that but man, its insanely hard. i have guitar hero 3 for the 360.
If you play this game on hard or expert starting off it will kick your ass and make you watch. I recommend it to anyone.

I'm looking into Rock Band. I think the interface is almost identical although i've never play Guitar Hero. I've been playing guitar for about 10 years so I don't have a lot of interest in the guitar part of the game - but the drums in Rock Band are like heroin.

I don't have a console though - so i have to think about which one to dump money in. The only games I really want are Tourist Trophy, Gran Tourismo, Madden, NCAA Football, and maybe a first-person action game. In addition to priority number one - Rock Band. I can get all those on PS2, and for $129.99, I think that's tough to beat. PS3 is nice because of BlueRay, but the titles are limited and it's $399 minimum. I don't really care for XBOX and I'm back to the price issue again. I think they'll make games for the PS2 for a while so I'm leaning that direction. I don't like the idea of buying outdated tech right out of the box, but that's how you save cash. For the price of a PS3 or 360 console, I can have a console, Rock Band, and another game or two for PS2 ready to go.

I've got no input on Guitar Hero, but just something to think about on the PS2 v. PS3... if you've got an HD TV, if you're anything like me, you'll be left wanting to utilize it if you've got a PS2. I've been playing Kingdom Hearts on PS2 lately on my 50" DLP, and while a great game can make up for its outdated graphics, I keep thinking that I'd like to be able to use my HDTV and play some of the really pretty new games out and watch HD movies. GT4 just looks terrible after you've played the GT HD demo (I played on a friend's PS3 on a 42" plasma). I've played CoD 4 as well, which I think really benefits from HD.

Yeah and another thing to think about is ps3 can play ps2 games, there was a problem with it at first because of some bug in the system that made all the ps2 games look like shit but my ps3 came with an update cd in the box that updated the firmware on it and ive played a few ps2 games on it so far. Unfortunately the ps3 doesnt come with hd cables out of the box nor an HDMI cable. Those you have to buy seperately but they are worth it! i was playing heavenly sword on my dads plasma, man its awesome.

And im seriously considering buying every guitar hero game in the series + rock band just to play more of this style.

My understanding is that the PS2 compatibility is only available on the 80GB PS3 model, and only works on about 60 titles.

I agree though, I have a 42" LG plasma, and would obviously like to put it to use with the console. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth it. The 80GB model is $500... and I don't know if I am ready to part with that much cash for something that I shouldn't be spending time playing anyway.... lol.

I don't know. I'll keep thinking it over and see what develops. I'm not in a hurry, except that I want Rock Band in the worst way.

the only difference between ps3 models are the hard drives (which by the way you can upgrade and it doesnt even void the warrenty) so i got a 349.99 40gb ps3, spent 80 bux, and now I have a 160gb ps3. So its possible to get a larger hdd for almost a hundred dollars less.

My favorite FPS (First Person Shooter) is Time Splitters 2 for the PS2. I have a few FPS games, but Time Splitters 2 is one that I've played through a few times. In this game, you're traveling through time and you get to use a huge variety of weapons and experience different types of "worlds". For instance, you use six-shooters in the Old West, assault rifles in modern-day military installations, plasma guns and futuristic stuff on other levels, tommy guns in old-school Chicago. It's a good game and lots of fun. It also has mini games and different things to do besides blast through the levels.

Here's some things I've found about the PS3 backward-compatibility - all saying that Sony nixed it on the 40GB model, but obviously haven't been very vocal about it.

If you look at the dates of those articles, there are fairly old. The newer firmware patches have been released and my 'origional' 40gb ps3 so far has played all my ps2 games and i have about 7 or 8. So it might be different but for me its working good.

****Edit****

the whole Timesplitters series is awesome.

That's good news.

You'd think Sony would make everything as compatible as possible to help them try to gain some ground on Wii and 360. At least you'd think so...

I'm not familiar with Timesplitter, I'll have to take a peek online.

Is the Wii outselling the PS3?

I don't like the complexity of my PS3. I can figure it out, it's just more like a computer than a game system. It took me two days to figure out how to shut the darn thing off!

No I don't read instructions :P

I don't own any game system, but try them every time I'm in the store...always end up asking some 6yo to start the game for me because I can't figure out which and in what sequence to push any of the 45k buttons on the controllers... The Wii is the only one I find even interesting but couldn’t source one during the holidays...so it's "no game for you!"

i got a ps2 when they first came out in 2001. i still have the exact same one, and am playing all sorts of games on it. going on seven years, and still running? that is what i am talking about.

back to guitar hero. i have been a fan since the original one came out a few years ago. i have beaten guitar hero, guitar hero 2, guitar hero rocks the 80s, and guitar hero 3 on expert. i think im pretty good at this game. ive also beaten the hardest song they made for the series- through the fire and flames, by dragonforce, on gh3. terrific song.

as far as the guitar gameplay, guitar hero is more in-depth and more difficult than rock band. so, if that is mostly what you want then get guitar hero. but, if the singing and drums are more what you want, then get rock band. or if youre planning on playing with your friends, since rock band has like four person mode.

man, it is like my goal in life to be able to beat ttfaf on expert. How long have you been playing? ive been playing since christmas (2 weeks and a bit) and ive almost beaten gh3 on hard, i have about 7 songs left to go out of 42. already beat all the easy and medium songs. I'm definitly going to be buying gh2 really soon.

funny how very little mention the WII has gotten in this thread. I own a PS2 and was in a real tough place when trying to decide whether I'd go for the PS3 or the WII.

I went for the WII for various reasons:

1. PS3 has great graphs and definitely is a worthy contestant; however apart from the graphics I just didn't find anything new to the games, I mean, they are great, but nothing out of the ordinary if you consider that the game play is the same as it was on PS2.

2. Price!! How expensive was the PS3 when it was first released!!! I just couldn't justify the expense.

3. Now that I have the WII I'm ecstatic!! This is fun to the bone!! You actually sweat; which was not my intention when I bought it (I'm a proud couch potato), but still, no matter what game you choose, the game play is innovative and addictive.

I'd recommend it for everybody; regardless of age, sex, and bike preference... :D

that song was pretty hard. if you want to see something really crazy watch through the fire and flames on youtube! its the hardest song they ever made into a guitar hero game.

this past christmas, my mother received a Wii. yeah, my mom. she gets up and runs around and basically exercises while playing. her favorite is the tennis. i played my fair share while home for the holidays, and agree that Wii is awesome.

The first time I saw TTFAF beat on Expert, I was at my barracks and I heard this wailing of guitar coming from the lounge.

I thought I'd stop in. Shortly after I thought I was going to have to lie down after watching someone beat it at 95 %. And I thought I was somewhat coordinated.

Hay, playing GH - Does this help at all in the real world to play a guitar?

Super Sneaky Steve
01-28-2008, 10:08 AM
In the game you can unlock an interview with Slash. He says that he was at a disadvantage playing GH because of his real guitar background and he'd be better at the game if he knew nothing at all. I think it works both ways.

JBarx
01-28-2008, 10:23 AM
My worthless opinion...

I think Slash is right, I tried playing guitar on Rock Band and not only did I NOT like it, I was actually better on drums, and I've been playing guitar for over ten years. I've tinkered around with "real" drums to have a vague clue but not enough to have to "re-train" myself for the game.

If that makes any sense.

Guitar Hero has sucked up a lot of my time, I love it.

If I was looking for a Playstation, I'd get the PS3. The graphics are great, and you get the added bonus of a Blu Ray player. Movies in Blu Ray on a HD tv are unreal!

My dad's PS3 even plays some PS1 games...

I've got a Wii and a PS2, play different types of games on them.

Ooooh, does that make me sound like a nerdy girl?

Ah well, my nerdy self will be rocking out to Guitar Hero tonight!

I got up to the final boss on Medium last night. Seems impossible.

I beat one song on hard but my score was really low.

Typically I can get over 100,000 on Medium. I think I got 130,000 on the Metallica song.

At some point I bet it's more about memorization than reaction time. Kinda like memorizing the tracks in Gran Turismo.

snowy
01-30-2008, 05:54 AM

snowy
02-03-2008, 10:40 AM
Well im sure rock band is a great game, but i'm more into guitar simulation than anything else (drums, vocals) and i think that gh is definitly better probably because they built the game for the guitar specifically, not just around many different instruments so the joy gets spread around abit.. I could be wrong but im just going on my opinion.
Im sure i'll end up getting rb just so play another game with that guitar controller anywayz

nYmYx
02-04-2008, 05:21 PM
Rock Band is essentially a multi-player GH. The other controllers are just a drum set and a mic. And it costs like $160+. The guitar playing aspect is exactly the same otherwise.

patrickjs5
02-05-2008, 06:11 PM
the guitar playing aspect is not "exactly the same." that is ignorant. they are different. thats like saying two different racing games are "exactly the same" when all driving games have different physics and acceleration and turning and whatever.

after you beat every guitar hero game, and beat rock band, you can come back and say they are the same. but i am saying- from a plethora of nerdy video game experience, including the aforementioned beating of all the games- that guitar hero is more difficult, and plays differently because of the different display. so please dont throw out generalitites. sheesh. some people.

OK... I'm back to my original dilemma.

I have $100 in Sears gift cards that I was going to spend on tools but decided to put that on hold. Sears has PS2's and Rock Band in stock, meaning I walk away with the whole setup for $129.99 + $159.99 -$100.00 = 189.98 plus tax. Of course I'll need a component cable and a second controller so that's another $50.00. GT4 is $20.00. My buddy said if I got Rock Band he'd buy me both the Honda and Suzuki PS2 superbike racing games.

So... all told, I'd be in $234.96 for the console, cable, extra controller, Rock Band, and three more games. Granted, I have a 1080i 42" TV that a PS2 will probably look pretty crappy on, but is there any really good reason not to go this route? I mean, to do the same thing with a PS3 would cost 3 times as much and I am not dropping that kind of cash on video games - I can't justify that.

Any thoughts? To get that much for that price, does it really matter that it's not the cutting edge technology? I would still get to play Rock Band and GT4 and all the EA Sports games that I like, just not on a new-release system.

JBarx
02-15-2008, 07:40 AM
OK, well I went ahead and got it last night. I still need to dig up a PS2 compatible component cable and digital audio so I can see what I've really got at full potential. But even running Rock Band through the stock composite cable in standard formatting - it doesn't look too bad at all.

I also have to grab a memory card, and a second controller.

Even so, for $203.47 out the door for the console and Rock Band deluxe edition... how can you lose?

Anyone else have calibration issues with it? I had to keep fussing with mine because it constantly felt like I was having to play ahead of the song to hit the drum notes in sync with the video. Really annoying and throws you off. I set the calibration to "plasma" (because I was using one) and that was way off. I manually set the signall offset to +60ms and that seemed to be about as good as I could get it.

Enjoy, and no regrets, think of it like this - if you skip around 25 movies (rental or theater) it will have paid for itself (what, around 50 hours of your time?) You'll probably rack that up in like the first 3 days! I’ll only get through two used books in that time...

Of course, if you spent that time on a second job... even a crapy one where post taxes it was paying just minimum wage of $5.85/hour you'd have $495.97 (=292.50+203.47) in your pocket in around three weeks... but that's no fun.
