View Full Version : Finally Found
SwordandScales 01-23-2008, 09:10 AM It took me a lot of searching, but I finally found a "brand new" 2006 599 Black. The dealer is asking $6,600 out the door, is that about right? I'm a Marine stationed at Cherry Point and am required to do the Motorcycle Safety Course, as well as some other things, so I have to wait a while to get the bike. I will probably end up actually having to wait until spring/summer, because I can't afford it honestly. Do you all think this bike will up and disappear, or people will wait for '08s?
There is also an '02 919 for sale by a private owner...but this is my first road bike. I'm fairly experienced on off-road Honda's, but I know they are much different. I'm sure the course will teach me a great deal (they have loaner bikes I'll be using), but at the same time, I don't know if I want a 900cc bike to start. I'm not a thrill-seeker in anyway, although you may not believe me :), but I have no desire to live life on the edge while on speed with two wheels. The 919 would be much more affordable, and due to its age, the insurance is actually much cheaper, although both are very low rates.
Any advice for this guy?
Mitch 01-23-2008, 09:24 AM I purchased my '06 black 599 for 7200 out the door, so in my opinion, you got a better deal than me! If it's still in the crate, etc, then I would say that's a fine price for a new one that has 0 miles on it.
It's also my first bike, and to be honest, it's more than enough power. There's really no need to get anything more than a 600cc bike. If I had anything more powerful, I might be dead by now.

This is the thread on the newbie worthiness of the 599 so I think you'll get lots of opinions there.
If a new bike isn't affordable, why not get a used 599? Chances are that you'll make a lot of noob mistakes like dropping your bike in the parking lot, so it's better to do it on a used bike than a new one.
What Steve said.
PS. :welcome
SwordandScales 01-23-2008, 10:45 AM I would love to find a used one, but they seem to be quite the rarity round these parts. That's why I'm tempted by the 919, but I doubt that will be around long either. I dunno, I just got a few nice new bills in the mail today. So, I think it will be the waiting game for me this summer, when I'm looking to be promoted, and paid up on a few things.

Are you sure about the insurance quotes? My insurance quotes quadrupled from the 599 to the 919. That sealed the deal for me. I wanted the 599 more anyway, but that made it official in a hurry.
nakedrider 01-23-2008, 09:19 PM Hate to say it but I think the quote for the 599 is right on. I purchased mine form a dealer 3 months ago (brand new for 6000.00$) after ttt and a helmet it was 5 or 6 hundred more out the door. With the 07 out it gives you an advantage with the dealer so don't be afraid to low ball him with his aged inventory. As for a 600 or 900 thats up to u. The dealer tried to sell me a 900 calling the bike the 599's big brother and maybe that is so but for me i have no use for a low reving heaver bike like the 900. Just make sure u get what u want and don't settle to save a few bucks. As for HP Like I have said so many times (The 599 has more than enough but not to much = FUN) !!! WELCOME!!

Well, I appreciate that note of advice. My monetary inconveniences sort of disappeared overnight, as hard as that is to believe, but it really happened thanks to some help from home. What should I be paying per month on this bike? What are you all paying? My funds are still fairly restricted, I do really want this bike though. However, if it would be wise for me to wait, I will. This bike won't last though, I do know that.
Mitch 01-24-2008, 10:01 AM How much you might pay on a bike is a personal matter that only you can really answer. Don't compare what I pay to what you should pay. Don't put yourself in a bad position either. Save and get it when you're good and ready.

I've learned this the hard way, and I won't be buying it until I'm absolutely sure. The price seems very reasonable, they seem to be trying to make room for '08 bikes since this one is 2 years old...still brand new though haha. The insurance is extremely affordable, that's one high point for me.
Is it common to make a down payment on new motorcycles, or go right out the door with financing?
I have to wear pretty decent gear due to USMC regs, so I've gotta purchase a leather jacket as well as good full-face helmet. Anyone have any suggestions for me in that department?
Thanks for all of your help guys and gals.
Also, why does it refuse to submit my post sometimes...it seems like I have to fool around with various things before it will actually submit? What's goin on?
SwordandScales 01-24-2008, 12:33 PM Sorry for the double post, but there is also another option, and that is the '02 919 being sold by a private owner. I would of course have to inspect this pretty thoroughly, but for $3,000 dollars less, and this being my first bike (which everyone is saying you will drop the first one somehow or another), than maybe I should go with that? I know it is considerably more power, but I have heard they are not different bikes so much as for different riders.
I actually do prefer torque and low end brawn rather than the power being at the high end of the curve. But, if this bike has anything serious wrong with it, I would immediatley be not interested. It is black though :).

I'm telling you, man... I would not eff around with a 919 as a first bike. I had a 750 with half the horsepower/torque of a 919 and easily wheelplanted it into a guardrail. It ain't fun.
Do whatcha want, but I don't think it's a good idea for your first road bike to have that much "oomph". One wrong ham-fisted throttle blip and you could be in some serious shit. I'm not bringing the doom-and-gloom... you might be able to control it fine, but if you can't, it's a painful lesson to learn.
Just sayin'.
Sachi 01-24-2008, 01:42 PM A lot of people could point you to a Kawasaki EX500 or a Suzuki GS 500 for a first bike. Or even a EX250, which is a superb little bike. They are light, have controllable power, and won't cost you much. And when you're ready to sell, you can get back just about as much as you bought it for.
My suggestion is to get one of these, used. Put the money you save into the MSF course and good gear. When you're ready you can move up - 599s will be around.
SwordandScales 01-24-2008, 02:06 PM I took a look at the GS500 Sachi, those seem pretty nice, I'll give them some more interest I suppose, even though I do care a lot about Hondas. I think the 919 would be too much, and I understand where you all are coming from.

My good friend has a 2004 GS500F. 4000 miles, paid $2400 for it. He'll lose almost nothing on it when he sells it. More here:

Sachi 01-24-2008, 02:57 PM Hey, no reason you can't hang around! Go learn how to ride, get comfortable on the GS, and when you're ready for a 599 (or 919, even) you'll have a ton of info and contacts set to help you!
Super Sneaky Steve 01-25-2008, 05:10 AM Of the two bikes I think the EX-500 is much better. I may be bias but you get a lot more for the money. The base price is cheaper than the GS and you get a liquid cooled motor that makes more HP and torque. It's a great mini sport touring bike.
www.ex-500.com is a good site for info on that bike.
SwordandScales 01-25-2008, 06:33 AM A good Marine friend of mine is coming with me, and he rides a Ninja 600cc I think, not sure of the specific bike exactly. He'll be able to help me out I'm sure. If it's cheaper, it's for me!! Thanks for all of your help, and soon, I hope to join this league of riders. You all are great.
rndthought 01-25-2008, 07:20 AM ...If it's cheaper, it's for me!!
FWIW, an attitude of the past that left me with many an unsatisfying purchase... when it was the underlying criteria anyway.

Like the time you picked up that girl on 8mile with no front teeth, a bad iching problem and a questionable adams apple?
Sometimes you do get what you pay for
rndthought 01-25-2008, 09:58 AM Like the time...
Don't remind me Steve
SwordandScales 01-25-2008, 11:08 AM Ouch, insurance for either an '06 Ninja 500 and an '06 GS 500 is double the premium. And I check with Nationwide again, just to make sure: an '02 919 is a 360.00 yr premium. '06 599 is still 638.00...but it's too much, I can't afford that payment and don't want to go down on something so expensive.
Once again, now I want to take a look at the 919. $3,500 and 360.00 yr for insurance is hard to argue with for a first bike. I wouldn't be so disappointed if I put it down either, as I would with a newer bike, especially the 599.
Of course, I would make every effort not to, but it seems everyone says you will drop your first bike. I have no desire to go fast and be stupid, I just want to have a motorcycle to enjoy on a Sunday; get good gas mileage; and ride in some club rides. Would I really be taking a big risk? Safety really is my middle name when it comes to stuff like this haha.
Sachi 01-25-2008, 11:23 AM What?? Check with other insurers - that makes NO sense.

Lol, that's what I said! The guy was like, "I have no idea why." I would call Geico, but when I called them last time they wanted around $3k a year for an XR650L...so I don't think I want to even mess with that haha.

As an active duty member of the armed forces don't you qualify for USAA? They actually use Progressive for motorcycle insurance (at least here in Texas).
I have been treated well by them. How competitive they are on motorcycle insurance I can't really say. I got a decent rate and have been using them.
rndthought 01-25-2008, 03:49 PM USAA is getting out of Motorcycles. Too much risk. Their rates for bodily injury are HIGH... like in "fish" high) and if I understood what they were saying correctly: if you currently have a bike insured and you sell/add - they will not re-insure/add another bike...
Other than this I LOVE USAA for Home/Auto/Banking/Credit. Best company I've ever dealt with.
Mitch 01-25-2008, 04:50 PM whoa, I have USAA as well, and I'm glad I got the insurance on the bike before they revoked that. Phew! And I don't pay very much at all for insurance every year.
SwordandScales 01-28-2008, 05:42 AM I do bank with USAA, but as said above they no longer offer motorcycle insurance. A few updates for ya!
I took a look at the 2002 919 and had a short ride on it. I was surprised by its docile nature, the first time I got on it, I was really afraid of just letting it get out from under me, but my old dirt bike fundamentals kind of resurfaced. I guess the rule for riding bikes applies to those with motors as well! The bike is in good working order, and just had all of its necessary servicing including new spark plugs and a new battery. The only thing I don't like about it is a windshield that is pretty unsightly (not because its a windshield, but because its chrome...eep), but that is easily removed.
Nationwide quoted me for $500 a year roundabout, and Navy Federal got me a motorcycle loan pre-approved.
I found a nice leather jacket at a store that gives a good 20% discount to Marines at all times, and the previous owner of the bike is giving me his gloves and helmet. He is also a Marine and was very courteous about every question, and let me do a really close inspection of the bike with no complaint. The bike doesn't appear to ever have been down, and the rider says he has never put it down personally. It already has frame slider which is great for me.
So, now I'm just waiting to make my final decision...
That 919 sounds nice. I live in Fayetteville NC and my 599 is the only one I've seen in the year I have owned it. In the southeast 599's are rare. I'm surprised to learn of the 2006 new you found. I paid about 6600.00 out the door in feb 2007 from the dealer in Lumberton. Fayetteville dealers are notorious for high prices, I'm not sure if the military base is the reason or not but everyone seems to think so. Not sure how that influences the price now but info for you anyway.
TooManyIDs 01-31-2008, 10:01 PM Concerning price. Don't know if they have any left. Had mine shipped, ask for Jeff.

Manufacturer Honda
Model Year 2006

Price *$4,999.00
JHenley17 02-01-2008, 05:52 PM Yeah... I think there are people here that paid more for used bikes... and to think I could have had the best bike in the class for wayyy less than the competition...
SwordandScales 02-05-2008, 11:05 AM Well folks,
You're looking at the proud owner of a 2002 Honda 919 in pretty great condition for a 6 year old bike. I'll hook you all up with some pics soon! I get to ride it this week for the first time I think.
*slowly turns to find glares from 599 owners* :(
rndthought 02-05-2008, 01:56 PM :clap :ride
DavidVTHokie 02-05-2008, 02:07 PM If you have the bike, and are not riding it today - you're nutz. It is B-U-T-ful in NC today.
rndthought 02-05-2008, 03:27 PM Diddo here in sunny FL!
Super Sneaky Steve 02-06-2008, 06:08 AM Grats on the new bike S&S.
I had the pleasure of driving to work in a slush storm today. Not good for traction.
SwordandScales 02-07-2008, 08:05 AM Well the reason I couldn't ride is because I need a temporary pass for on base riding while I'm waiting to take the MSF Course on Feb 21st thru 22nd. You have to wait until the closest course is started before you can get the pass.
I would've taken it this week, but I'm in a two-man office and my boss is on vacation. Today is my first day riding, pray I learn fast, and ride well! Safety, however, that is something that will be in my own hands, and I plan to handle it well.
yeroC 02-08-2008, 09:51 AM Congrats S&S and :friday here's to many more days of safe and spirited
riding. Post pics.
