View Full Version : Budgeting for Safety
SwordandScales 01-24-2008, 06:26 AM Hey everyone, I just joined yesterday, and I'm thinking about purchasing a new 599 fairly soon. I'm curious to see if anyone could suggest some good gear for me while I'm on a tight budget. However, due to Marine Corps regulations for motorcycle safety, I must wear a leather jacket and gloves. However, everything else is pretty much normal...I can wear the good old combat boots for awhile before I can afford a different set of riding boots. I'm looking for a full-face helmet, as I don't want to really put a windshield on the bike.
Any suggestions?
Super Sneaky Steve 01-24-2008, 07:59 AM If you're on the cheap you can get some leather gardening gloves. They are pretty useful from everything from hitting a punching bag to say actual gardening.
As for a jacket you could get the one I just ordered in the other thread.

Cheap as hell, duarable and warm according to Sundog.
For helmets, I find HJC to have some quality affordable helmets. I've owned three HJC's over the years. Scorpion is supposed to be good and cheap too, though I've never personally tried them.

Steve likes to fill ‘em with Vaseline... to keep his hands soft for the bike.
(Positive I just set myself up... just can’t pass up a chance to insert literature references  )
JHenley17 01-24-2008, 09:38 AM I tried on an HJC and took it right back off. Maybe it's just me, but my Scorpion and KBC felt way better. Right now, I'm using a Scorpion exo400. You can find them from some store on eBay for $140 shipped. If you want, I'll check my history and give you a link.

Of Mice and Men, right? A little Steinbeck for your grille?
Not only am I smart... I'm good looking and smart.
Super Sneaky Steve 01-24-2008, 10:16 AM Oh yeah, I had to read that in high school. The big retarded guy that killed that girl by accident.
For some reason the vasoline in the gloves didn't stick in my memory.
SwordandScales 01-24-2008, 11:26 AM I see, well I would appreciate the eBay link, but thanks for the rest of the information here too! You all are so helpful, glad to see this is an active forum with intelligent folks.

Bear in mind, I'm from Alaska. Warm is relative. I still get a bit of a chill with that jacket riding in 15 - 30 degrees F, and that's with a polarfleece jacket underneath. It all depends on how long your willing to put up with being chilled.
And while the leather is durable, the stitching has come loose behind the shoulders. I'm going to fix it with some heavy thread some day soon. I noticed the tag says "made in Pakistan," which explains a lot of the $60 price.
If you need cold weather gloves, these Olympia Mustang IIIs (http://www.motorcyclegearreview.com/reviews.php?prodID=276) are just about the best thing ever. They cost about $20. I spent about $100 on various gloves that didn't do the job until I found these. You have to get used to using one finger on the brake, though.
It feels really good to be the only rider on campus on a 30 degree day like today.
Mitch 01-24-2008, 12:15 PM Oh, you go to VA Tech, huh? I went to UVA. Hometown brothers, although we're supposed to hate each other, right? I'll be in Cville this weekend actually visiting friends.
BTW, I have ski glove liners (pretty thin insulating gloves) that I wear under my larger leather riding gloves. That way I can layer depending on if it's cold in the morning and warmer later in the day. Works like a champ.

I noticed their website says they have a warrenty. You should send them an email and see if they will repair it.
For warm gloves, nothing compares to electric gloves, but those arn't cheap. Worth every penny though.
SwordandScales 01-24-2008, 01:21 PM I was wondering how their items were so cheap! I also looked at the Scorpion jackets, but they are very expensive. I wouldn't mind paying around $200.00 for a jacket, and I'd like to have one that is reliable and comfortable. I'm not too concerned about cold, it can get chilly here, but nowhere near the 15 degree mark metioned haha. It's coastal NC for goodness sake!
JHenley17 01-24-2008, 01:44 PM See what the local shops will do with you. The guys I bought my bike from got me a JR mesh jacket for about $80 off MSRP and an A* leather jacket for about $100 off MSRP. They also put some of their stuff on sale. Earlier last year, I found a Scorpion exo400 for like $90 at a dealer. Wrong color, though.
This is the store I bought my Scorpion from. I think it's an even better helmet than my more expensive KBC...

Sachi 01-24-2008, 01:47 PM Being made in Pakistan is not necessarily bad. I had a Fieldsheer jacket and pants that were Pakistani in origin. They were of very good quality. I, ah, outgrew the pants but I still have the jacket.

Haha, we get those free from supply. Thanks for the awesome reminder though.
