View Full Version : Offensive Sig? (Moved from Introductions)
JBarx 01-29-2008, 09:23 PM Hi all!
Just graduated from a Ninja 250 - which I loved - to my new 2006 Black 599, which I am due to pick up tomorrow! Just hope the ice is melted by then. I fell in love with this bike when I first saw a picture of it in 2004. Although I've flirted with other motorcycles (most recently the green Triumph Street Triple that I took for a test ride. Shhh! Don't tell my Honda). I've had a soft spot for Hondas since my boyfriend rode me all around the Calif. Bay Area on his 1971 CB350 when I was in high school.
Really glad to find this site, though sorry to see Sneaky Steve's misogynist sig line. I'm not fat, but it shouldn't matter. I do hope women of all sizes are welcome here!
Jill
Well I can vouch for myself - I like women.... maybe a little too much at times. I'm sure just about everyone else here feels the same way (can anyone confirm RND on this one? - just jokin', man!). I think Steve's just being funny... his sig is from the Simpson's. I'm sure he doesn't mean anything by it. You've got nothing to worry about. Enjoy that '06! I'm sure you'll love it. I really like the Speed and Street Triples too. Beautiful bikes. I hope to get one in addition to the 599 someday (after I get a dedicated CBR track bike first)!
JHenley17 01-29-2008, 10:00 PM Don't worry. His sig is actually from Family Guy, but I think it's all in good fun. This is a pretty friendly, laid-back place. I think the only way that you'll feel out of place is to be squidly.
What made you choose the Hornet over the Street Triple? That's the only bike I'd trade mine for right now, and I probably would if it were paid off...
JBarx 01-29-2008, 10:09 PM Don't worry. His sig is actually from Family Guy
Oh yeah, I'm an idiot. Got my animated shows mixed around.
djamalt 01-29-2008, 11:09 PM :welcome JillG. So nice to have you among us. Hope to hear some great things from you and your 599 experience. You picked one hell of a bike, as I'm sure you know more and more each time you go for a ride.
JillGat 01-30-2008, 07:50 AM What made you choose the Hornet over the Street Triple?
Price.
Which is why a lot of people end up with an SV650, but I wouldn't go that far.
:welcome Gill
Just for the record, you shouldn't take Steve's comments too seriously, it's almost his job to make jokes on this site. Ignore them at will.
JillGat 01-30-2008, 08:48 PM For the record, I have a crude sense of humor that knows few bounds and usually don't mind being teased about being female. Rnd's sig line about "pre-whore, post-whore..." - while I don't get it - I'm not offended by it. But Steve's sig line is mean spirited and not funny. It is easy to "not take it seriously" if you don't belong to either of the groups it targets. The FAQ on this site says it will not tolerate racism or bigotry. How is this "humor" different? You don't see how women already have to face this kind of crap every day and maybe would like to escape it a little bit here, with other motorcycle pals?
Maybe we should have a contest to come up with something else that Steve might find funny and use for his sig line. Unless this is the only humorous line he can come up with?
Jill
JohnG 01-30-2008, 08:56 PM Welcome JillGat,
Enjoy the bike, I do.
Sachi 01-30-2008, 08:59 PM I agree with Jill; that sig line is demeaning. That it comes from The Family Guy, which is a mean-spirited show, is no excuse.
FWIW, my partner is overweight, I know from her perspective (as well as my own) just how "funny" that sort of stuff is, and I'd prefer that it be stopped.
JillGat 01-30-2008, 10:33 PM Thanks for the support, guys (and "chicks"!).
FTR, I'm still waiting for my bike, so I'm pissed off about that, too!
JohnG 01-30-2008, 10:47 PM I agree with Jill; that sig line is demeaning
So does he have a right to be de-meaning is the issue?
Super Sneaky Steve 01-31-2008, 05:38 AM Well I see this issues has jumped out of my inbox and into the public forum so I guess I'll address it.
The rules around here are kinda lax and common sense is used most of the time, but one of the clear cut rules is no personal attacks. This line is neither personal or an attack.
Lets break it down :)
According to Quagmire Fat chicks need love. Well don't they? I think everyone does. Maybe the word fat is offensive? But some people are fat, that's just a fact of life. Why not say what things are?
He goes on to say, but they have to pay. To keep it in context Quagmire was discussing ways for Peter to come up with some quick cash and he was thinking of becoming a man-whore. For ages fat men have sought love from attractive women with some monitary compensation. So why can't it work the other way? To not do so would be sexist!
So in conclusion, I'm not calling anyone fat, but to say fat chicks don't exist or need love would be false.
If i had recieved a simple whisper to take it down I would have, but instead I get intimidating messages. Should I really respond to that? How many of you would do something because you were bullied into doing it?
Jill, I'm glad you're with us and I hope we can be friends. I'll share some advise that was given to me and really made an impact. "The best revenge is to live the happiest life you can" If you're happy people that don't like you will be mad, if you're upset, they will be happy.
JBarx 01-31-2008, 07:40 AM I gotta admit, I've never seen Euclidean logic applied to Family Guy. That's a fresh one.
Sachi 01-31-2008, 10:16 AM Well I see this issues has jumped out of my inbox and into the public forum so I guess I'll address it.
. . .
He goes on to say, but they have to pay. To keep it in context Quagmire was discussing ways for Peter to come up with some quick cash and he was thinking of becoming a man-whore. Look, it's not that we don't understand the "joke." What you seem to miss is that regardless of whether that statement is a joke, it's still offensive. Claiming that it is a joke does not excuse it.
Jill, I'm glad you're with us and I hope we can be friends. I'll share some advise that was given to me and really made an impact. "The best revenge is to live the happiest life you can" If you're happy people that don't like you will be mad, if you're upset, they will be happy.
Uh huh. Here's a little secret. To women, this sort of response means "I'm not going to listen to you. Live with it or go away." It is very typical in male-dominated areas. "Hey, none of the guys think it's offensive -- so why should you think it's offensive?" This sort of response - a refusal to consider what we say -- shows a deep lack of respect and an utter lack of concern about the effect of your words.
I'm pretty tough and I don't react to most things, but I hope I can open your eyes a bit as to how this sort of "discussion" affects women.
DarkTint 01-31-2008, 10:25 AM :popcorn
rndthought 01-31-2008, 10:28 AM My defense is, I am a whore. Can even ask Steve's Mom who, by way, has to pay
I'm a post whore (I like to post), attention whore, fashion whore (more succinctly: Claiborne, Ck, Target and any "bargain bin" or sale rack whore), tech gear whore, "wanna know the 'why' of everything" whore and so much-much more... It's a state of mind and knows no gender boundary in the sense - to be made a whore of, corrupt/debauch.
It's also kinda a play on "post" as the action and the prefix... I’m conceding it’s no phase, I have and always will be - a whore.
The extension of this, for me, is that we are ALL whores to some degree. We all have things we'll "sell" ourselves for. Be that things like gadgets, some special person's attention or whatever.
Dunno Steve, maybe it's time we freshen up our tag lines... No sense in offending wantonly unless there is some masive principle to stand on. Now that it’s been called to attention, is this battle worth it? Do we go all Spartan 300 ala motoChris on this? Whatcha think?
I can easily see this from both sides. The reason I'm not doing the swift and almighty on Steve's ass is because I realize that his sig line is not a personal attack.
I'd also like to add that Steve mentioned that he would gladly remove the quote if he was politely asked to do so, instead he feels that he is being bullied into it. And a typical reaction to being bullied is to fight back.
All that aside, why don't I do the honors:
Steve, would you be so kind as to change your sig line to something else, because your current one offends some number of members on this forum. Thank you in advance.
Super Sneaky Steve 01-31-2008, 11:00 AM Look, I'll never be the kind of guy feminists want me to be and you won't ever be the traditional woman that I would like, but the difference here is I'm not trying to modify your behavior yet you try to modify my own.
I don't live in California and I don't hold those same ideals. Sure you can call me a dominate male because I am. I'm proud, confident and I think farts are funny, but lets not make this about me.
The key here is tolerance. I can tolerate your PC comments and you can tolerate whatever I want. Or you can not, but it only hurts yourself.
And don't think I don't understand women. If I didn't how could I get under your skin so easily :P
My sig line is down for now, because a respected friend asked me to do so as a favor and our friendship is more important than my own pride. It's just an internet forum afterall :D
Hmmm what shall I think of next!
cybil hamartia 01-31-2008, 03:44 PM geez, guys.
feminism's been around for an awful long time. an awful lot of it makes an awful lot of sense. the sort of stuff Sachi and JillGat are putting out there is hardly radical fringe stuff.
it doesn't have to do with california (i'm from the South), i'm not even sure it has all that much to do with feminism. it just seems like being decent to me.
the old road is rapidly agin',
please get out of the new one if you can't lend a hand.
(and he's from minnesota!)
best,
.cyb

2nd- leave steve alone it's a sig line for gods sake
3ed -If u really had a problem with Steves sig line u could have private messaged him and I'm sure he would have taken it off rather then being dragged in to some stupid debate about fat people on a motorcycle forum!
4th- For the record, I really thought Steve liked FAT girls!!!!???( 2 each his own)
5th- I've been down this rode before with 59901 and every time I see his sig line now I feel like a ass because I replied to his post about his sig line only. Lets all get past the sig lines an get back to the 599 that brought us here.

Yeah! What he said!
(I've been away from the forum for a while... clearly I've got some catching up to do.)
Opticycler 01-31-2008, 07:55 PM Let's not get all PC here......kinda ruins everything. People need to lighten up a little.
Everyone's going to be offended by something sooner or later. I've read things here that I found offensive, but I don't let it bother me. No one means any harm, and no one forces anyone to read posts that bother them.
Maybe all opinions should be banned. Who gets to set the bar? Where do we set the bar? Member lifestyle's? Member hairstyles? Political persuations? Member's bike displacement?..... :?
Maybe the "off Topic" section should be banned, too many non PC things could be posted there.
Maybe all words should pertain to motorcycles only. Maybe 599's only.
Geez. Can't believe this would even come up on a motorcycle forum.
P.S. -Does this mean we have to remove the link to the Wii girls now? Say it aint so.
JohnG 01-31-2008, 08:09 PM Who gets to set the bar? Where do we set the bar?
If you set the bar high...make sure you raise the barstools too!

For the record, yes I do like fat people, and skinny people, just about all people. I just think fat people are more funny. Would John Candy be funny if he wasn't fat? What about Chris Fahrly?
I thought Quagmire was funny and light hearted, just like me. I can't think of a better way to describe myself than that line.
I'll no longer say F*t Ch*ck. From now on they are pleasantly plump :D

rndthought 02-01-2008, 09:17 AM People need to lighten up a little.
I agree, everyone needs a bit of that.
Here's the nut of it. If there is no reason to purposefully offend or make someone uncomfortable... then let's not do it.
I think there is a bar in place. A very high bar. It is y'all. The community here. You make this a great place to come and thru your integrity of expression and choice of words naturally elevate the conversation here to what we have.
However, when a question is raised - regardless of the tact (or lack of) in the "how" of it - regardless if it is a new person on someone who's been here since day one – a 1000’s poster or 1 - then we all should take a moment of careful consideration. It's just polite. It's dignified, which is based in our own actions and thoughts, not others. Don’t look at how to bring them down, concentrate on how to rise yourself above. Another human being just expressed emotion of pain or despair. This isn't about did they earn the right, round here as I'd hope anywhere y'all go it is a given.
This isn't an issue of PC. We are not talking to faceless masses; we are not looking for favor. We are a collection of individuals, friends who gather to talk about these Honda bikes. Let's keep that focus. One of your friends just spoke up. Give them some respect - just as I'd expect for anyone else here who'd speak up.
If resolving the issue requires someone to compromise their principles or character then obviously it gets complicated. Decisions will get harder; we’ll enter the real world of compromise. But as before, I certainly hope no one here would purposefully offend or make someone uncomfortable... if something is call to your attention and it is easy to correct and accommodate, then let's do that. Isn't that what you'd do for friends, expect them to do for you?
Now if you are still reading...
Having said that. We also don’t require our friends to do everything our way. We give them some slack just as they give us some. Lets ALL try to keep this in mind. We are a collection from many places here. We know very little about the WHO each of us is as a total person. To jump on any one statement or comment and summarily judge someone as misogynistic or a bigot of any kind is beyond rude, presumptuous and very very very (get it? VERY) narrow minded. When we ask for tolerance we must also be willing to practice. Remember the focus of this place.
There will always be issues. When they come, be kind, be thoughtful, be reasonable be respectful and be polite. Drop your assumptions and ask for clarification but be polite. Be clear, be direct and above all be polite. Take your issue up with the person in question first, then go from there but be polite. It has always worked for James Dalton, it's worked here in the past and I believe because of the good kind of people y’all are, it will continue to work.
Let’s get it on.
VooDooYouDo 02-01-2008, 09:31 AM meh
n2citrus 02-01-2008, 09:41 AM Well said RNDY!
Now lets get back to the fun. This is starting to look like a very special episode of Honda599 forum.
P.S. Hey I have a new tag for Steve..."Mopeds need love too". Uh oh....''
Super Sneaky Steve 02-01-2008, 09:45 AM I have a short list I'm creating.
I thought of the moped one, one of my personal favorites, but I don't think it would fly. BUT i have something even better in store :D
I'm open to suggestions. So lets hear em.
Pepper 02-01-2008, 09:58 AM I've always enjoyed the sig cause reading it reminded me of that Family Guy episode and made me laugh.
When I was a little yonger I used to be super skinny, and was in karate class (I'm talking grade 8 ish) people used to call me the Killer Ethiopian..
To jump in and right away complain about someone being offensive to you without taking any time to get to know them, even in a limited forum setting, is far more offensive to me than a simple quote from a tv show.
Steve, my sig on another forum is "Those of you who think you know everything are annoying to those of us who do"
I wonder if that is offensive to know-it-alls?
Welcome to the site Jill and to the wonderful world of the Honda 599. It's a fantastic bike and anyone I've met on one has been top notch.
rndthought 02-01-2008, 10:14 AM Nice pepper :thumbsup
Oh and...
I wonder if that is offensive to know-it-alls?
A little bit, but I'm a tolerant guy
JBarx 02-01-2008, 10:18 AM I think we're all good here.
Compare this forum to my old standby, FordF150.net... and you'll all see how good we have it here. I have 4 years and 5300 posts over there which is the only real reason that I still check in every once in a while - well, that and I still have an F-150. Things over there get ugly fast and often. A lot of times I'm part of the problem, sometimes the solution, but even so - the culture is much different. What's considered drama here wouldn't even register on the radar over there. I still like a lot of people there but I spend a vast majority of my time here.
Frankly, there are more articulate, entertaining, and all-around better people to exhange with here than on any other forum I belong to. Sometimes I just wish it were more busy!
Not everyone is going to see eye-to-eye all the time. That's allright, that's they way it should be. Just work it out and go with it.
Slide 02-01-2008, 10:36 AM P.S. Hey I have a new tag for Steve..."Mopeds need love too". Uh oh....''
How about... "Cavemen need love too." I mean that in the "happiest way!"
Super Sneaky Steve 02-01-2008, 10:38 AM Jbarx, I can't agree more this is the best site. I often frequent triumphrat.net and the mods are just insane and everyone hates it. A lot of people are leaving that site now and it's a shame because there are lots of good people there.
This site is also good becasue we aren't bombarded by ads all over the place. This comes at some personal expense to Alex (forums aren't free) so i applaud him for that.
But I come most of all for the people. Just a great mix in here.
Pepper. Shhhh! don't let everyone know that I'm not a misogynistic pig. You're going to ruin my reputation! (seriously you're spot on)
Hey when are you and salt getting the band backtogether? I think it's time to dust off those tights.
Pepper 02-01-2008, 10:50 AM Hey when are you and salt getting the band backtogether? I think it's time to dust off those tights.
We've got a reality show on VH1 about us getting back together :P
Let's just all get naked, fat, skinny, short, tall. LET'S JUST GET NAKED. We could include our bikes as well. I think that might solve some of the world's problems. Although it would undoubtedly be a sausage fest here we can all dream of whatever hunky or babelicious person comes to mind. With freezing rain coming down by the inch in the Catskills and the Honda hidden away I can't think of a more pleasant diversion. Tolerance and good times people!
yeroC 02-01-2008, 12:39 PM How's this for PC?
ALL YA'LL CAN KISS MY BLACK ASS!!!
Just kiddin' people. C'mon it's Friday, maybe payday, weather's too shitty
to ride but hey we're all alive, hopefully healthy. Let's keep this forum
fun and cool for anybody with a 599/919 to hang out while they're supposed
to be working...wait...shh..the boss is walking by.....ok he's gone.
Anyway, as a member of about 5 other forums that i frequent, my 2 cents
would be to handle things thru PMs and try to keep attempts at forum
humor in perspective as sometimes things like intention, etc., could get
"lost in translation". I don't think SSS intent was to offend. That's all.
Have a good weekend.
robkb 02-01-2008, 10:22 PM Is think "cool hose envy" is politically correct.
I could've bought a 919, but I liked how the 599's engine looked. Especially, the turbo hose thing on the right side.
rndthought 02-02-2008, 11:49 AM 3 pages before off topic...that's not bad...for an off topic thread
I like the higher reves... more fun in the city for me :ride
JillGat 02-08-2008, 08:03 PM I like your new sig, Steve, even if you didn't do it for me, even though I DID ask you privately first and you wanted to argue with me, which is why I brought it to the forum, and no, I'm not a Californian, I'm a New Mexican and I'm glad I brought it up, because I loved all the responses and I know who all my new best friends are, now! Even you, RND!
Whew.
Okay, back to discussing how much we love our 599s along with all the ways we're going to replace all the stock parts with mods from other companies.
The fact is that half of me makes fun of people who have to modify everything and the other half of me really wants Rizoma Dynamic mirrors. At least I'm not such a big sissy that I'd perseverate over the silver (vs black) bolts. Heh!
Oh, I got my bike last week and have been having a blast! So I ride all day and spend all night reading this stupid forum.
Jill
InvaderZimm 02-08-2008, 09:57 PM  ...stupid forum???
Super Sneaky Steve 02-11-2008, 05:16 AM No, you didn't ask me to take it down nicely the first time. This is what you wrote.
"Hi Sneaky Steve,
I'm not a fat chick, but still, don't you worry that your sig line might offend some people on the Honda500.com forum?"
And in my reply I politely explained why I chose it and why I didn't see it as a problem. To which you replied asking for a picture of me to use in your sig line.
I don't like to post personal messages but if you're going to lie about it I kinda have to.
Oh, and this forum is not stuipd in any sense of the word.
