View Full Version : Where are you on the map?
JillGat 03-04-2008, 09:26 PM Is there a way to post a map on this forum and have us all enter our locations so we can see where everybody is? (I guess we'd have to add a non-North America map, too at some point) I've seen that on other online message boards. Not sure how easy it is to do.
Jill
yeroC 03-05-2008, 06:48 AM Yeah i've seen that on a few sites too. But if we all just put our location
in the field that says "location" when we sign up it wouldn't be needed.
For instance i can see you're from NM and i'm from Va Beach. If any more
info is needed i will have to require 2 forms of ID, retinal and biometric
scans, and a pint of infant blood liqueur and/or the preserved, sweetened
phalanges of a Burmese sweatshop worker. :)
rndthought 03-05-2008, 07:45 AM Didn't we have something like that a long time ago...? Some enterprising individual could make a Google Map and make it public...
Mitch 03-05-2008, 09:51 AM yeah, that would be awfully cool to have. Not for any other purpose than to see where the real epicenter of 599 fandom is.
rndthought 03-05-2008, 12:31 PM Let's give this a try, Rev.1:
Go ahead and add yourselves...
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=116686831056281577017.000447b57194ce2de4041
How do you add yourself?? And I really have to get some pics of my 599!
rndthought 03-05-2008, 12:39 PM :? Well for me there is an "edit this map" or something option on the left bar. Once you hit that you'll get some tools at the top of the map. One looks like the stick pin, just drag it to where ever you like and enter your info. I added a HTML link to a photo to be fancy.
JHenley17 03-05-2008, 01:33 PM Ech... my pin disappeared and I can't delete it...
carlitos_92 03-05-2008, 03:14 PM That map is actually kinda sweet. No real "epicenter" so far...
rndthought 03-05-2008, 03:45 PM Is "Josh" JHenly? Cause there is a pin in LA and one in MO... Should I delete the one in MO?
Yeah the interface is kina squirrelly after you drop your pin. If you close it and re-click the link everything sorts back out though...
I expect a nice grouping down the East coast and in the SoCal area...
Billy from Philly 03-05-2008, 03:56 PM Google map directions on how to use
http://maps.google.com/help/maps/mymaps/create.html
BUT still does not help ??? Im confused :idonno
rndthought 03-05-2008, 04:12 PM Sweet, thanks Will!
There hast to be a site to do this for groups, kinda goofy having it under my personal account (don't mind but I'm sure there are more robust adaptations out there).
motorico 03-05-2008, 04:14 PM Current epicenter - DFW
JHenley17 03-05-2008, 05:41 PM OK, I think I fixed mine. I deleted the one in MO. I can't see it again, but I'm pretty sure it's right, now.
carlitos_92 03-05-2008, 06:22 PM Current epicenter - DFW
Wow, no kidding. 8)
Transient, you're not too far from me at all. Interestingly, the Google satellite image is several years old and shows a green field where there is actually the Pei Wei, Super Target, and all kinds of stuff.
VooDooYouDo 03-05-2008, 11:14 PM No real "epicenter" so far...
I see dallas/fort worth as the epicenter right now
Mitch 03-06-2008, 09:19 AM weird, I don't see an option for "Edit This Map" on the left. I can only leave comments or save it as my map. :( I think there's an easier mapping program out there. I'll see if I can find it.
motorico 03-06-2008, 10:32 AM weird, I don't see an option for "Edit This Map" on the left. I can only leave comments or save it as my map. :( I think there's an easier mapping program out there. I'll see if I can find it.
I had to login to google to enable the edit feature.
Mitch 03-06-2008, 11:29 AM oh, that worked! Thanks man.
Mitch 03-06-2008, 11:30 AM we should get this "stickied"
Transient 03-06-2008, 11:30 AM Transient, you're not too far from me at all.
No stalking me! :D
geobeck 03-06-2008, 01:26 PM Just added the first Canadian contribution. With the placement of my icon, it looks like I'm riding up my street. :D
...except for some strange reason I keep disappearing. Does my icon show up for everyone else?
yeroC 03-06-2008, 02:12 PM Hey JillGat brought this up and she hasn't even joined yet. What the
dealy, yo?? Even i joined tho' i didn't see the utility in such a thing. 8)
pillowpants 03-06-2008, 02:14 PM I must be a idiot. I've added myself twice and can't find myself on the map anywhere. I've got the edit button but it does no good as far as I can tell to try and edit what I've already done. Help!
pillowpants 03-06-2008, 02:22 PM Got it now.
Transient 03-06-2008, 03:43 PM For some reason, it takes awhile for changes to stick. Probably something about how we're doing it. But it's cool!
Mitch 03-06-2008, 08:10 PM I sure hope the 599th member puts their name up on the map... we're so close!!!!!!!
motorico 03-06-2008, 08:18 PM Is there really someone that far north in Canada? It was placed by charmatia.
JillGat 03-06-2008, 10:01 PM I should be there now!
JBarx 03-06-2008, 10:35 PM I can't believe I am the only one in the Midwest so far (MN nothwithstanding).
JillGat 03-07-2008, 12:08 AM And I'm the only one in the Southwest or Rocky Mountain West so far. I know we have members in Colorado and Arizona, no?
VooDooYouDo 03-07-2008, 01:10 AM I can't believe I am the only one in the Midwest so far (MN nothwithstanding).
Whada talkin' bout, I'm in Wisconsin. Ohio is barely Midwest, they are in the eastern time zone.
J/k but yeah, I was there the whole time.
rndthought 03-07-2008, 08:35 AM After you add a pin and it disappears, just hit your browser refresh button and it will pop back up.
JohnG 03-08-2008, 07:43 AM Phoenix, Az.
motorico 03-08-2008, 08:00 AM Wow, carlitos relocated to the Pacific
carlitos_92 03-08-2008, 09:50 AM Uh, it says tomacana "modified" me. Dude, I love California, but to put me in the water is just downright mean. :(
geobeck 03-08-2008, 09:56 AM Hmm, from what I see so far, there are only a few of us who are actually riding. There's one person who appears to have had an accident, one person who is severely pissed about something, and a bunch of people who are just standing around looking blue. ;)
PDXrider 03-08-2008, 11:29 AM Took a while to figure out. I think I had 3 stickies for myself at one point. But hopefully i got it and didn't mess anyone else up in the process.
JohnnyG 03-08-2008, 04:24 PM :woohoo GO EAST TENNESSEE!!!
tomacana 03-08-2008, 08:22 PM Uh, it says tomacana "modified" me. Dude, I love California, but to put me in the water is just downright mean. :(
 :wtf
Sorry about that. I inadvertently dragged one other pin off then tried to exit without saving. My changes worked too good :!:
tomacana 03-08-2008, 08:43 PM :woohoo GO EAST TENNESSEE!!!
Hey JohnnyG. I know where you live
I was down that way last Monday. I rode down To Frussies for lunch. I took Nails Creek to Martin Mill Pike, crossed over to Nubert Springs via Stock Creek and finished back on Martin Mill Pike. My route to Frussies is a fun ride. Besides Martin Mill Pike, I like to take the Sevierville Pike route through Kimerbelin Heights and Rays Gap and sometimes across to Throrngrove Pike and Kodak Road.
We need to rally up sometime. Lunch or some outing.
JohnnyG 03-09-2008, 09:21 AM We need to rally up sometime. Lunch or some outing.
Yes we do, You sure know your way around. LOL
We need to rally up sometime. Lunch or some outing.
Yes we do, You sure know your way around. LOL
And another (East Tennessee added to the map).
DarkTint 03-09-2008, 10:54 PM Uh-oh. Someone named "Blunt" moved me from St. Louis to Colorado. Surely a mistake, but I can't figure out how to move myself back! :thinking
rndthought 03-10-2008, 08:40 AM Ok, here we go.
To view the map click this link. If you have a Google account you can add it to your maps...
Click this for the map --> Map of Members (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=116686831056281577017.000447b57194ce2de4041)
Lay of the land:
There is the Map View Pane...
On the left hand side there is a column, it is divided into two parts:
-The top part lists different maps the check box adds its Place Marks to the Map View
-the bottom and larger part, list out all the Place Marks of the selected maps that are visible in the Map View Pane. NOTICE the “Edit” button.
To add a Place Mark...
- Zoom/pan the map around until you find where you’d like to add a Place Mark.
- click the “Edit” button (NOTICE it now changes to “Done” and “Save”)
- the “Title” and “Description” that pops up under the Edit button in the Place Mark list are for the whole map, don’t change these.
- In the top left corner of the Map View there are now some buttons.
- click the blue Place Mark (looks like an inverted tear drop) and then click where it should go (don’t drag and drop, just click it then go click where you want to place it on the map) After it is placed you can drag it around to fine tune it’s position...NOTE: If the Place Mark you just added seems to disappear, just hit your browsers Refresh and it should pop back up.
Editing your Place Mark (the Place Mark callout will be open if just placed but if not you’ll need to be in the “Edit Mode” and select the Place Mark to be edited if you didn’t just place it).
- Title: the name of the Place Mark
- Description: Details can include links and HTML to embed pictures.
- Symbol: If you click on the graphic for the Place Mark, you’ll have many options to choose from.
- When done, select “OK” at the bottom of the Place Mark callout.
-Over where “Edit” was, select the “Save” button. Then “Done” if you don’t wan to add or edit anymore.
-in the bottom left of the Place Mark call out box there is also a “Delete” option...
Again if things disappear, just hit your browser Refresh.
jfeagin 03-11-2008, 08:22 PM Fun! Thanks, RND. :D
Any other MD'ers up for a group ride this spring?
VooDooYouDo 03-12-2008, 12:13 AM Uh-oh. Someone named "Blunt" moved me from St. Louis to Colorado.
He moved me to Brainerd (http://www.brainerdraceway.com/), Minnesota. I mean I like racing, but I don't want to drive 6 hours to get home.
cybil hamartia 03-12-2008, 05:39 AM Is there really someone that far north in Canada? It was placed by charmatia.
yeah, erm, that was a mistake. god forbid i ever get up there. seems like someone removed that one, though, so i guess everything is cool and i'm back in new york.

Zoom all the way in and find out what street I live on.

EgoThreat 06-01-2008, 11:26 AM Been off-line for a while... but back on the board and added to the map. Is the DFW metromess still epicenter? Lots of additions since March it seems.

dexx85 06-06-2008, 08:15 AM We should make one of these maps for our favorite roads to ride on. Kind of like inside tips for those planning real long rides.
tsweimer 06-06-2008, 09:47 AM Great idea about the map. I'll hopefully be bringing home a 2006 599 tonight. I'll be sure to throw myself on the map when I do. When I looked there's was only two Canadians on it. Come on guys, there's got to be more 599 owners than that up here!
Larrys599 06-07-2008, 04:53 PM I'm on the other side Canada, here in Newfoundland. I picked up a new '06 599 from Quebec a few weeks ago.

flt6fun 08-14-2008, 05:36 PM My second post, and I went ahead and push-pinned myself into the heart of LA; I was slightly surprised to see only one other bike here in the land of sun and silicone...oh well, if I ever see you on the street, I'll give you a BIG thumbs up!
Alatron 09-10-2008, 07:31 PM I've added myself to the map, that makes two 599s for Newfoundland. An 06' black and an 04' Asphalt, I know I've seen a yellow one around.:)

Hey a4naught. I've had the 599 for about 2 months. Its my first bike. Have the socal 599 group ever gone on rides together?

Excellent! I hope you are enjoying it as the rest of us have been.
I seem to remember djamalt have been out at least once or twice, but I don't recall exactly who else. I know others have tried to get some of us out in the past. You can paw your way through the SoCal ride thread and probably figure it out. I've never been, as my schedule is odd and the idea of getting to the other side of LA from OC is not my favorite. I may have to hunker down some time though, or I will appear unsporting.:?
Be safe!

EDIT: And in Canada "Louis" would be pronounced "Loo-eee-ville" --- so is it pronounced, "Loo-iss-ville" in ur neck of the woods?

Not that I would be the foremost expert in these matters, but I do live on the Mason Dixon line.
"Loo-eee-ville" will get you a pass in KY. That's acceptable, and somewhat appreciated for effort if you're from out of town. The "authentic" way is "Loo-uhh-vull". You got the TN version correct.
There's also "Sin-Sin-Nat-Tee", and "Sin-Sin-Nat-Uh". No idea where the second one comes from but you hear it occasionally. Dumb. And it's not "Cinci" for short, it's "Cincy".

Jack Daniels is better, that one's easy. But, in order to be truly be called bourbon, it has to be made in kentucky. Much like real chanpagne has to be made in france. Or something like that... Hence Kentucky Bourbon, and Tennessee Whiskey... Even though they are pretty much the same thing...
