I've been having a ton of fun lurking and watching y'all fumbling around marking your territory! You guys are too funny!
I'm new to the forum as far as posting...been watching for a couple of months. Bought a black 2006 599 in January and have yet to ride it. (I know, that's truly a travesty!) :( I just passed my MSF course last week and in no way feel I'm ready to jump on the 599 so I'm cutting my teeth on a beat up Suzuki 500 GS something or other. Hopefully I'll be joining y'all soon in singing praises to the 599. In the meantime, it's a pleasure meeting y'all. Happy riding to you all!

Is that GS one of the old classic UJM types?

Howdy, NakedWench. I just got my riding license last week, but I find the 599 quite easy to manage.
The first time I took it out, immediately after getting the semi-restricted version of my learner's license (here in BC you get the supervisor and speed restrictions lifted after you pass a skills test), I made the mistake of staying on small residential streets in my hilly neighborhood. Not easy to handle in such close quarters at low speed if you're not used to it.
The second time I took it out, I stayed on larger (but not busy) streets, and had no trouble at all. The bike has long legs, and likes to stretch them out a bit. 8)
Just remember to let the clutch out sloooooowly when starting from a stop and you'll be fine. Ride the sweet spot through turns at low speed and keep your eyes where you want to go, not just where your headlight is pointing.
Don't get too used to a smaller bike before jumping on the 599. I took my training course on a 250cc dirt bike, where I had to twist the throttle wide open to get up to highway speed. If I twisted my 599's throttle like that, my front wheel would probably leave the ground. :D
Find an area with nice wide, straight-ish, but less busy streets to practice and you'll be ridin' comfy in no time. :)

Welcome!! :D Good to see another one of us in this neck of the woods.
Welcome aboard! That Suzuki is a great starter, but it will never feel the same after you hop on the 599 the first time!

Thanks for all the welcomes! Drew, the owner of the Suzuki rode the 599 home. He says the 599 "is more refined" than the Suzuki and he's been bugging me to let him ride it ever since. He got in the first 91 miles; the rest are gonna be all mine!
The 599 is a very docile and forgiving bike below 7K RPM's, hop on and be gentle. Keep it below there and you'll be fine. One day, you'll just love twisting it at 11K and HOLD ON!!

Even below 7000, I've had one or two occasions to appreciate the shape of the seat holding me on. The bike has pretty good torque at low RPM. On the street, there are times when I never take it out of second gear!
It was interesting taking it on the highway yesterday, only the second time I've had it on this particular stretch. I'm still pretty slow off the start (focusing on working that sweet spot so I start off smoothly), but once I get past second I'm starting to twist it a little more. It's gotten to the point where cars pull away from a light faster than I do, but I zip past them as I approach the speed limit (and go slightly past it of course).
A little more practice and I'm sure I'll be starting off quickly without popping the clutch.

Welcome! Glad you are loving your 599. I had a 2004 a few years ago, sold it and missed it so much that I just bought a new 2006. ENJOY! :thumbsup
