Just joined the forum and wanted to say hello to everyone. I don't have a 599 yet, but I'm in the process of getting one if a dealer in Jax can beat the price of one I have my eye on here in VA.

If not, I may get a 919 although I'm not too thrilled about the color.
What does everyone think?

Glad to be here!

Well, well whats up homey? Finally someone here from my neck of the
woods. I live in VB, Salem area. Welcome to the site. Next time you're
around the way holla at me. Are you talking bout the red 919 at VB Honda?
It's been sitting for a while along with a black '06 599. That dude will not
budge on price, forget about it. Norfolk Honda seems like a nicer place.
I'd try them too. Good luck. Hopefully you'll be mounted up soon and
we can go for a spin or hit the strip. I have two buddies i ride with, a 954
Honda, and a Speed Triple. Love for another Hornet to join us. Don't
worry we don't stunt or douchebag. Just like to ride with spirit. 8)
Or if you're just starting let me know, and me and you can take some
tame rides to get your feet wet.

Thanks guys.

yeroC - I've been around the area a few times before actually getting stationed here. Oh, and that dude at vb honda lacks personality. I'd love to get that 06 599 that's sitting in the back but, your right, he's not moving an inch on that price, even with that deep scratch on the gas tank. I suppose I'll just have to make the trip to TN to get one. No worries though, I still have my k6 1000 to scoot around on.

Maybe I'll see you guys out and about sometime.

Hey cobra! I figure you either really like that Sylvester Stalone movie Cobra, or you like the bad guys from GIJoe.

Welcome! I've had both a 599 and a 919. Both are great bikes in their own right. I found that I loved the 600cc motor for the fun of pushing the RPMs. The 919 is great, very smooth and lots of power, but kind of souless compared to the 599 in my opinion.

That's what you call piston eveny :P

My bike has plenty of soul.

Well, for piston envey I have an SV1000. Nothing like a 500cc piston in a V-Twin motor to give you some torque! Please don't take my 919 comments personally. Like I said, I had a 919 and it is a great bike. However, I did sell it! It's just my opinion on the CB900F motor. Nice torque curve, smooth engine, it's great, but nothing exceptional.

Haha!! No, niether of those. I owned a 95 Mustang Cobra once and I used that as the basis for my user name on those forums. I've since used it for every other forum as well. There's too many forums to keep changing names for, so I stick with one.

Ride safe!

Cyclerider: Thanks for the insight. I'm not too worried about the power characteristics as I have a 1000 to satisfy those needs, I'm just looking for something decent(sp?) to commute to work with. I am however leaning towards the 599 because I think my wife will be able to ride it as well.

I'm pretty sure it will, especially since I haven't taught her to ride yet. So I'll get all the ride time from it first, then I'll teach her. Evil, I know but it's a hornet for crying out loud.. who wouldn't do the same?? :D

Since you're on the subject. I bet she could use a new tree stand, a compound bow and a mac tool box.

She'll love it!

I was thinking more along the lines of an enclosed trailer and 2 tickets to Laguna seca.

She may enjoy those more... :D

Your wife should take the MSF course instead of learning from you and she should get her own bike. Maybe a Ninja 250 to start. Just my humble opinion.

She'll take the course eventually, hell, I'll take the course again with her for the extra support, but my intent is to get her familiar and comfortable with the controls. Call it a confidence building block if you will.

As for getting her own bike, the 599 is an excellent starter.

Hey Cobra,
Here's my two cents, from a girl's perspective. I don't know you and your wife, so I recognize I could be making assumptions/generalizations that are totally wrong. So, with that disclaimer:

I suggest that your wife take the MSF course on her own without your "support." How tall is she? The 599 can be somewhat intimidating to someone who is relatively new to riding; especially if they can't put their feet completely down. That's why I thought her starting on her own bike; possibly a Ninja, would be a good idea. If you really do want her to be a partner in this motorcycle thing, let her do it herself without you being her "teacher." Otherwise she may just feel like it's your idea. And if she has to compete with you to use the Honda, she may just give up. I'm sure you're just enthusiastic and really want her to have fun.

I apologize in advance if I'm reading your situation completely wrong.

Just throwing it out there... there were at least two couples taking the MSF course with me (I took HD's Rider's Edge). They seemed to be more than happy to be out there together. The husbands rode earlier in life, but were pretty much taking a refresher.

By the end of it, none of the completely new people felt like they were ready to hop on a bike, but they at least got the basics... and that's all it's meant for.

I rode my bike to class... the only way you're going to get comfortable is to ride. It scared the shit out of the women when I started it up for some reason... that was with the stock can.

JillGat: No apologies needed for your opinoin, there yours. I appreciate the input, and your right, the whole idea is to make it fun for her. She is anxious to ride, which is good, and also asked for my help throughout the whole experience. I've seen it too many times, beginner's take and complete the msf course, are they ready? I'm not convinced, it takes a whole lot more than three days, one of which is in a classroom, to be ready to ride. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great program, but remember when you started driving, I don't know of one person who did not drive in some form , before ever taking a test. Granted, driving a car and riding a motorcycle are two completely different things, the feeling is the same for beginner's.

The ninja is a good idea, but I don't think she would've let me buy that. :) As far as competing goes, we aren't like that at all.

Again, thank you for your input.

JHenley: That's what I'm talkin about. :)

mrdavid: WELCOME, to the site, lot's of good info here. Ride safe.

thx for the warm reception. i visited this site frequently to get info before purchasing my first bike (and to read hilarious posts gone astray). even though the verdict was about 50/50 on the 599 being a good "first bike"--from ppl here and ppl i have asked in person--i had to pick it up since it appeared that the later models would never make it overseas. again, i'm proud to be an owner and hope to post more.

Welcome mrdavid599! Nice location! Just returned from a 6 day trip there. A nice break from the endless Canadian winter! Rented a bike from sportbike rentals in Santa Monica for a day, great ride up PCH and along Malibu Cyn. Enjoy the forum, it's a great source of information, advice and entertainment in general.
