View Full Version : Crosswalks and I Don't Mix

So on Thursday night, I was coming home from work at about 9pm. I was itching to get home so I could watch a movie, and I made a left turn onto the road which is behind the UC Berkeley Chemistry building and gunned it. Unfortunately, I gunned it when I was riding over top of the white crosswalk lines which are a little slippery compared to asphalt.

My bike began to fish-tail quickly left and right as it fought to balance and get traction. Suddenly, the tire caught the road and bucked me off to the right side at about 30 mph. I slid for quite a ways on my back and head, and sadly I was not wearing any armored pants or boots at the time.

I have some road rash on my knee and the top of my foot. Otherwise I'm okay. I'm lucky. Very lucky. I could have slid into the oncoming lane or hit the curb. But I stood up, went to the ER, and got my wounds cleaned instead.

I shouldn't have tried to accelerate so fast. It wasn't going to get me anywhere faster. I thought, "accelerating is fun" and made a stupid mistake. To top it all off, I didn't know how to handle the fish-tail and rein the bike back in. And I wasn't wearing all the proper gear which was an insult to injury. I could have gone home and just worried about repairing my bike. Now I have to clean and dress my road rash nightly until they heal.

That is all. I'll let you know how the bike repairs go. I'm getting the full run-down from the shop on Tuesday... :hump

Sorry to hear that, real bummer.

Any clue what you're looking at for repairs? Did the tank get beat up?

Glad you're ok. Heal up fast.

I really don't know. My tank has a small dent in it (about 1x1 inches), all sorts of scratches on the engine, and maybe damage to the radiator. I'll find out tomorrow.

I'm already looking for stock parts to start replacing stuff. Looks like I'll need a new fiberglass tail section, brake lever, radiator hose, tank repair/replacement, and foot pegs. Someone just posted about foot pegs in the For Sale section, so I think I'm gonna get those.

Anyone else have stock stuff they want to sell to poor little me?

Glad you are relatively ok Mitch. Thanks for posting the story, a reminder we can all use from time to time. Hope the bill isn't too painful.

Oh man, sorry to hear about this! I'm glad you're relatively okay. Get well soon, I'm itching for a ride in the hills with some company.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but at least you're doing ok.

Get well soon and learn from your mistakes :)

That sucks... but good that you learned something. I've made two mistakes that put me on the ground and haven't made them again, so it's a pretty good teacher, though a little too painful to be practical. Good luck with the reapairs.

So I showed up to the repair shop this morning so they could tell me the damage and price tag for my wipeout. $4025. To be fair, they were going to replace absolutely everything that had a glimmer of damage. They were going to replace my handlebars, grips, and mirrors just because they looked scratched or dusty.

They're taking a second look at it to see what would be necessary to make it road worthy and will hopefully get back to me later today. The rest of the work I will do myself.

I gotta remember to get pictures!

Super Sneaky Steve

2/3's of that is labor costs. If insurance isn't going to cover it do the work yourself. Just hand them a few parts that need paint or repair like your tank.

They will charge you $50 just to take your tank off!

Price the parts you need online and we'll walk you through what to do if you get hung up.

So much for that Stimulus Check...

Hay glad you are OK and like's been said... It's a cheap lesson when put in light of your observations of what could have happened.

For sure do what you can yourself, that or just part it out and go get a new bike cause $4k to fix it is just nuts. Could always go "RAT" bike...

Out of curiosity... what movie were you going to see?

Great question. Would it be worse if he got banged up over a crappy movie, or that he missed a great movie because he got banged up? :)

price tag for my wipeout. $4025

You could buy another hornet for that price and just swap the parts.

In this picture, you can see the tank dent, the damage to the bar end and brake lever, and the scrape on the front headlight assembly.

Here's some damage to the engine, scrapes and what not. You can also see the lack of a step and the brake pedal.

Damage to the exhaust.

To fix the radiator, step, brake pedal, and lever will $950 with labor. I'm happy with that, and I'll keep you posted on my own preparations for repairs as well.

You know what threw you off, it was the imballance caused by having a sticker on your swing arm. Doesn't seem like much but under conditions of lesser traction it can induce a wobble that may result in a crash.

:P

We can fix the damage. It won't be cheap but it's doable.

No frame sliders? Probably would have saved yah some dough.

Mitch
05-15-2008, 02:28 PM
Yeah, frame sliders would have saved me a ton of money....

I actually tried to peal that damn sticker off, and after flaking off about 1/4 of it, I stopped because I was getting impatient. I'll get it off there once I get the bike back.

$950? Heck, for $570 you can get rearset from PJParts.

Is the radiator broken so that it isn't functional? Then again, I guess you don't really want slippery coolant leaking.

As far as exhaust, you can get an aftermarket for half of what I was quoted when I went down, about $900.

JHenley17
05-15-2008, 04:16 PM
Except the peg and brake pedal, you can live with most of that. I had similar damage to the headlight fairing and bar-end. The tail needs to go. I've still got a slightly bent clutch lever that works fine. Everything else just looks scratched and can be replaced over time. I don't know how they came up with $4k. I think hondaparts-direct could have you set for well under $2k.

If you were quoted $900 for a stock muffler, methinks you were being ripped. While you're up there, may as well go for a full Hindle system.

Cover up the damage to the fly screen with a Givi. Buy some stickers that look like bullet holes and apply them to the heat shield on your muffler until you can get that part replaced. Yeah, pegs and levers cost too much. If you bought a motorcycle part-by-part, it would cost a fortune!
Your tank... Do you think having frame sliders would have prevented the damage to the tank?

JHenley17
05-15-2008, 10:17 PM
Cover up the damage to the fly screen with a Givi.

It's only a $45 part and takes about 10 minutes to install. Unless you just want a screen...

Sorry to hear of your mishap Mitch. Glad you're still with us and
walking, tho!!
Honestly i don't see 4000+ bucks of damage. The exhaust still works
i'm sure just scratched up the heat shield, right. Other than the pegs and
levers, it looks like a bunch of scrapes and scratches from my vantage
point. a little unsightly, sure, but i wounldn't go broke trying to fix all
that. What is your insurance co. talking like?

Mitch

Then that will be my next part to buy. I'm also going to purchase:

Heat shields for muffler
Bar end mirrors to replace the bar ends and scratched mirror in one fell swoop
Leather Tank cover
Brake Lever (thanks Snapperhead!)
Fiberglass tail section

After that, it should be all be back to normal.

I agree though, $4000 is way too much. They were trying to replace my handlebars, grips, mirrors, the full muffler (instead of the heat shields), and other crazy stuff. Ah well.

JHenley17

If you're going to cover it, you might want to get some primer or something on it to keep it from rusting.

If you're getting the parts yourself, www.hondaparts-direct.com is the cheapest place I've found. That's where I got the flyscreen at that price. It's actually $34 there. I was thinking of my total, which also included a new shifter.

The cost of the repairs seem really high considering it's mainly a pull and replace senario. However if it's an insurance job let them fix it all. A word of caution Insurance companies are the lowest of the low. Their method of operation is to delay, deny, and then defend themselves when you sue them. Read the fine print in your policy and get everything you are paying them for. Be polite but be a demanding SOB and lastly make sure you leave a paper trail. Can you tell I don't like insurance companies. Anyhow good luck whith the repairs. Many thanks to the academy and the forum for letting me blow the thread all to hell. What were we talking about?

I think that tank looks incredible. Where do those vents go? Anyhow, does that tank fit on the '06? And if it's cheaper than 250 bucks, then I'd get it. I highly doubt it is though.... Stuff is so expensive! :yell

Take a closer look, 10-to-one says those "vents" are stick-ons with a stock tank. Just like the fake hood scoops on import tuners. Still a cool twist. I especially like the CBR swingarm/hugger combo.

dude! sorry to hear about the crash.. I actually just ran across this thread looking at the SF bay area thread.. I'm in Oakland. When you get back up and running.. let's ride!

incidentally, for $4500.. there's a guy in Morgan Hill who was on CL w/ his '06 599. 2800 miles or so.. don't know if it sold.. I ended up buying one w/ slightly more miles, but closer to home.

Cool, glad to see a fellow SF Bayer in the forum. Alex is in the south bay, and we had a ride planned for this weekend. Of course it fell through, but maybe we can get more than just two 599s out now!

I'll keep you posted on the repairs and hopefully we can all ride together soon.

I never got my tank fixed. I put a leather tank cover on it (similar to Leatherwings), and I will put some sort of paint/sealant over the bare, scratched metal to keep it from rusting. I will probably purchase a new tank when one becomes available at a decent price.

this is where I purchased my bagster tank protector from. And don't listen to Steve when he calls you a gimp. He's just jealous.

Check out Leatherwings' pictures to see what it looks like. I don't have any good shots of mine on there currently, but when I do, I can post them up.
