View Full Version : So I dropped my helmet last week...

I had my 16,000 mile service done last week and as I was getting ready to leave the shop, my helmet, the free soul that it is, decided to go with the passing wind. Too bad it can't fly, though.

It was sitting inbetween the handlebars, where I usually put it, only this time I placed it on top of gloves (in a hurry, I needed to go pick something up), as I turn around to see if it's okay I see it fall! I run to pick it up just to watch it bounce off the ground and hit it again!

Needless to say, Saturday was helmet shopping day. I first went to CycleGear for their 20% off helmets sale. The only thing I semi liked (within my limited budget, that is) was a solid black Shoei RF1000. It was $350 - 20% + tax. So approximately $300 bucks. I liked the way it fit, but hated how plain it looked. But what finally put me off was how easily the face shield got fogged up. All I had to do is breathe and it fogged up!

Disappointed I couldn't take advantage of the sale, I went to Road Rider - another local gear place only a few miles away from CycleGear.

I loved my Scorpion. It was comfortable, left no marks on my face, the shield didn't fog up (unless it's raining and cold), and I already have a tinted shield for it.

So, I looked at the scorpions and saw this:

I love this thing. Too bad my bike isn't white .. or black ... I was disappointed. Again. So I asked to see the Scorpion catalog to see if it came in any other colors - and what do you know?! It comes in black with a "chameleon" print on it. What that means is that the color of the metallic looking print on the helmet changes from green to reddish-brown depending on how the light hits it. Neat! I was sold on the spot.

I have to say I love my Scorpion too. I scraped the face shield a little when I went down but otherwise it's OK.
I'm considering another one anyway though.
Or maybe the new EXO-1000.

I want to try the exo-1000 as well. My only complaint with the 400 is the vents. I can't really feel any difference opened or closed. Otherwise, awesome helmet.

That's a nice design as well. Another reason I love Scorpion...

What the hell, you drop your helmet once and right off to replace it? Stimulus check must have hit the bank! (did it fall or did you PUSH it? )

FWIW - I used to always hang it on a mirror... now, forget who it was but someone `round here, talked about how they hang it on a passenger peg... since then it's the high side passenger peg, that's the way I do it... Works real well... so far...

Last I checked, once is all it takes! I am wondering where I can send it to have it checked? Backup helmet never hearts.

Never go the stimulus check - when's that coming? But I do consider this my late birthday present to self.

I also have new mirrors - pictures are yet to come though. :D

Think you are being a little over zealous... I mean it was a 3' drop whilst empty, no? Is it physically dented or cracked (inside or out?)... But end of day safety and confidence in equipment is king... I think if you call the MFGR they will have a program for it... but they will be VERY zealous since they are legally responsible... so I wouldn't be surprised if they just categorically say replace it.

It's not cracked, but it does have little white holes from the little stones in the asphalt - in two places - one where it hit and bounced off of, and second where it fell on second. It's possible that it's okay, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Plus, it's sweet! (Via my crappy point and shoot.)

Sitting in your cubicle taking pictures for your online forum? I hope your boss doesn't find out!

My boss understands that I'm not a machine and have interests outside of work that may occupy my mind during the day. I try not to abuse this privilege.

AleX, my man, that is definitely not my cup of tea... but I'm glad you like it and I'm happy for you.

I'm quite happy with my plain flat-black modular Shoei, chips, dings, and all. That's the downside to flat - really easy to ding up.

Like, totally holographic, dude. 8)

Seriously, that is kinda nice. I like the subtle color-changing effect (at least it looks subtle) more than I do the scorpion/dragon motif. Now all you need to do is have your whole bike painted to match.

Hmmh, per your first description and the official manufacturer photo, I wasn't too impressed. But your photo shows the effect off better. I actually think it looks kind cool.

I recommend the green metallic visor for it. That completes the insect look. :thumbsup

Or, the gold visor. Oooooh…

Has anyone used Scorpion's mirrored visors? I have one for my KBC and I don't really like what it does to my view. I get kind of a double-vision thing going.

Okay, so at the risk of sounding like a total flake... I returned the helmet tonight.

"Eh?"

Well... this morning on the way to work (15 min commute via a highway) I tried to remember whether my old EXO-400 was this loud... but couldn't. On the way home from work I had no doubt that this one (EXO-700) was indeed louder. So much louder, that by the time I got home I had myself a nice little headache! (And I wear ear plugs, mind you.) So as much as I loved the way the thing looked, I wrapped it back up, put it in the box, and drove it back to the store.

So much for that. :?

Back on the market I go. :?

I bought a blue mirrored one. I liked the looks but the mirror finish scratches up real easy. I'll never buy another one.

I had gotten rid of my ex700 too cause it was just too loud. Been using a shark rs1 for over a year now and love this helmet. It is quite, lite, aerodynamic.

Alex, save your coin, and look for a good deal on an Arai. You won't regret it!

Well... this morning on the way to work (15 min commute via a highway) I tried to remember whether my old EXO-400 was this loud...

I had an EXO-400, and it was significantly quieter than my current helmet, which was supposedly designed with wind noise in mind:

I think the reason is that the scorpion has a lot of padding around the neck and lower jaw.

I wouldn't discount the RF-1000 Alex. I've used one for years, er 3 years, and I love it. I've done some major distances with it and I've never had a sore spot once. Throw in a pair of ear plugs and I can drive for hours and hours. I use the matte black one but my next will be the Picotte. Up here in Canada (where we get raped on pretty much everything) the RF-1000 goes for $560!

I am pleased with my RF1000. If you want it event more quiet, you can add the Whisper kit from Shoei that seals the helmet around your neck.
