Any of you 919 guys tried the "flapper" mod?

I've heard about this for years within the 1000rr crowd, but while doing some reading on it tonight, they mention that it works on the 919.

I done it then undone it. Didn't make any noticeble difference but it sounded louder without it.

I did it to my old 2002. Like so many of these types of mods, it may or may not make any real difference, but I always figured What the heck! It can't do any harm and maybe it helps!

I just did the flapper mod, I can feel a little difference, but not so much that I'd go crazy about doing it. I've hread from other people it does make a difference. You can hear the engine sucking in air at the lower RPM's. Nothing to get over excited about.

This isn't on the 599 I guess?

As far as the hornets go, I'm pretty sure it's a 919 thing...

hmmm, interesting. since it's so simple, i might try it just to see. but I'm actually more interested in a baffle-ectomy (that's if it doesn't do anything screwy to the bike). i'm not trying to get more power, i'd just like the exhaust note to be loud enough to hear over wind noise.

I've completed a bafflectomy. I really like it. I've had several of my riding buddy say they think it sounds awesome. I like that it give the bike a good sound, but it's not so loud that I can't stand to ride it down the highway.

is the only one I've found with good enough sound to let you hear what it really sounds like.

that does sound good. does it do anything screwy to the fuel injection? does the bike run funny in any way at idle, any rpm, or throttle position?

if it has no ill effects, i want to do it with mine.

before I did mine I checked with a bike mechanic that I really trust. He said as long as I don't change the full exhaust system it wouldn't hurt anything. Bike starts right up, idles just like it's supposed to, and pulls from idle to redline just like it always had. I've had them opened for about 8-9 month, and haven't had any ill effects. I bought an extra set off ebay for about $100, once you cut it, you can't put it back.

cool, thx.

i guess i should just look it up on the wristtwisters forum, but are there any special tools needed?

it's not the most powerful one, but i do have a power drill

Since I didn't have those tool at my disposal, I use the biggest drill bit I had get most of the metal out of the way, then took a dremel tool to clean it up, and remove the rest of the metal. The hardest part is getting the inner pipe out of the can. That was what gave me the biggest fit.

I don't like the low exhaust like that, sounds good from what I can tell, I still like my underseat though...

A friend of mine that has a 919 just got a power commander and made some decent power(99.86 at the wheel). The reason for the tune was that we intalled a 900RR header(mufflers/and flappermod) but mated(tig welded) it to the stock y-pipe so that the look of the bike remains totally stock. The full exhaust caused the bike to run really rich and to prevent the cylinder walls from being washed down with fuel the power commander cleaned up the a/f ratio very nicely. When doing mods the hp numbers are secondary to the a/f ratio that is what is important to engine life.

I will get some pics of the muffler/header set up and post them for you guys!

How did all this effect the over all ride of the bike? I'd like to see some pics on how all this looks...

isn't 100 rwhp what a stock 919 makes?

these are the numbers from Sportrider.com's tests

99.9 rw-hp @ 9000 rpm

63.4 ft-lbs @ 6750 rpm

Leatherwings,

From my experiance in the automotive world different dyno's from different manufactures will yield different HP figures. The dyno that was used for the tune was a dyno jet if I remember right. And like I stated before the HP numbers are not as important as the A/F numbers. I do know that I rode the bike before and after the mods. The bike has always made good power but after the mods and a tune the bike has much better throttle response, more torque, more pull on the top end and runs much smoother, seat of the pants says that is it making more power than before. I rode the bike the other night and accelerating hard out of a second gear corner the front wheel went skyward and it has never done that when I rode through the same corner grabbing a handfull of throttle.

I will post pics of the mods as the bike looks really stock!! Get craig to come over tonight and take some pics!

If you do the flapper mod you might as well do my botttom of the side panel mod.
Trim the bottom of the side panel to open it up by the air intake. Now your motor
can pull in air from where the chain is.
