So last night I went down, nothing to crazy.... I almost wish I had been doing something stupid, had been speeding or was drunk, at least then I'd have a good reason for going down. But no. Just a little bit of gavel, in combination with the "cardinal sin" of not looking where you want to be going, instead my eyes were drawn to the ditch like a moth to a candle, and then I was concentrating on landing on the softest part of the rock filled ditch...

I'm Ok ATGATT :) But my bike is a lil' messed up....

This is what pisses me off the most, everything else can be replaced cheap....but this... the little stopper ear on the head tube got bent allowing the bar to make it's little imprint FU**ER!!

Guages took a good whack...

New cowl needed

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn202/invaderzimm599/DSC03426.jpg

Here you can see that the grab rail took a good hit from the rear, it's actually bent the mount and seat latch assembly forward pinching the seat in place...

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn202/invaderzimm599/DSC03427.jpg

the frame and the grab rail mounting point/seat latch usually form a 90 degree angle.. It took a while to get that all sorted out...

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn202/invaderzimm599/DSC03429.jpg

Fender broke too...

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn202/invaderzimm599/DSC03428.jpg

Thankfully this is the only part of my wardrobe I have to replace...I have a matching hole in my hand

Parts have been ordered, that is, all parts save for the tank, I'll deal with that later I figure....hey Lance where's that Chartreuse? My sore body could use a drink...or twelve....

Wow, good to see you survived. The bike looks terrible though. Good luck to you getting it all back together again. Chartreuse to save the day!

Man, that blows. Good to hear you're okay. Doesn't sound like it was that violent of an accident; this just goes to show how delicate the pretty paint and plastic we straddle really is...

Good luck gettin' her fixed back up.

P.S. You didn't mention whether your petcock was damaged or not?

Yeah all in all I guess it really wasn't a hard crash, my petcock came out of it unscathed :) Every non-rider always has the same comment though, "Well you should be more careful". It bugs me, I am careful. I like my skin, and I like the use of all of my appendages<--insert petcock comment here). It's not like I was blasting around without a care in the world. I was less than 10 mins from my house on a grocery run.. It just boils down to bad luck mix with a little inexperience in a panic situation, not lack of caution. I've learned from it, and so has my wallet :)

Ugh... Sorry man. That hurts just looking at it.

I know that sick feeling after you go down... it's the worst. Good luck with getting the bike back up to snuff.

Glad you're OK!

I hate gravel on roads, it was one of the reasons I sold my first bike. Good luck getting your ride back on the road.

Bummer man. At least you've still got all your human parts. Those be more expensive. I still have an "oops" mark on my tank from when I went down 6 months ago. My ego can take the dent and the tank doesn't leak... I'd rather spend the $600 on an exhaust.

You are already way ahead of the game because you had your gear on. I can assure you that it's easier and less painful to fix broken plastic and metal than it is to fix broken bones and skin! Good luck getting her back on the road.

It's yet another nectar the Gods have bestowed upon us. It would do your spirit good...

Sorry to hear about the spill, wow, the amount of damage

Next time keep yer hands on the bar

God speed with the bike, body and soul.

Thanks everybody! This site rocks for moral support anyways looks like the total bill for repair is around 420$, but that's without the tank repair...Up here winters are long so I'll address it then, might even spring for a custom paint job er'sumthin'

Anyways I'll post pics of the repair in the next couple days....

...I have a matching hole in my hand
Was that from the pavement? A sharp piece of gravel? A pointy stick? Basically abrasion or puncture?

Glad to hear that you are okay though. And I look forward to hearing about your spirit's and your bike's recovery.

Gravel I'm guessing....I apologize for the dirty hands, just finished picking stray bits of grass, dirt and rock out of every nook and cranny(petcock?)....

On the road to recovery... Those frame sliders are multi purpose :)

Glad to hear you are OK, and that the bike is on its way back. I hit a gravel patch early on with my Hornet while in a turn...took a while to get over that. For months I took corners with great caution. Darn that gravel.

Hey maybe its time for a wild new paint scheme!

Good to see that you came out of it basically unscathed.

Did you wash the bike after the accident or is it always that clean? Look at that sprocket...its minty fresh!

Anyway, sorry to see so much damage on your ride. I say go for the custom paint too!

...In that pic the floor is still wet from washing it, but yes it's always that clean, it's a daily driver rain or shine, header gets polished once a week too :)

Ouch. That's a lot of damage to the bike. That glove looks pretty nasty, too. Looks like the one spot on the palm without reinforcement. I cut my hand a little worse than that my first night with the bike, it really sucks having your palm throbbing, kind of limiting in some daily activities. Good that all else is well, though.

Yes... paint... nice...

It lives again!!!! Figured I'm gonna be waiting a while for all the OEM replacement parts, so I got em up and running again.... nothing like a lil' bondo and some spray paint :)

Hey thanks! ....

Yeah after my show got canceled back in 92 I was pretty bummed, got fat started drinking, things looked good for a while during that whole "Stargate" thing, but again that couldn't last forever....So now I fix what I can here and there....notice the polished generator cover? I just happen to have an old hand operated egg beater, a used toothbrush, a newspaper, some string, an old thimble, some rubber-bands and my trusty Swiss army knife and Voila!

I love the fact that everyone who has had a spill is getting back on the horse. It's like damn I just broke my leg but look at my poor bike. I'm gonna fix that then go and enjoy myself riding the twisties. I'm living with a dinged tank as well so I feel your pain. Glad your ok and good luck with he repairs.

Damn!!! Glad your OK. I almost did the same thing a few months ago. I got a little squirrely going into a curve and started heading for the ditch and trees that I was looking at! Damn, that sent a shiver up my spine. Stupid brain! :?

A car hitting you is one thing, but if someone isn't prepared to take at least one lowside, they're probably not serious enough about it to be riding...

Hehe... There's a big difference between expecting it will happen and being prepared for it.

Knock on wood... I'm still slide/drop-free, but I figure it'll happen, and when it does, I hope that I'll examine the odds and say "You know, I rode X,XXX miles before I did that. It sucked, but I survived, and it was worth it."

Easy for me to say so far, but I definitely got props for my fallen brothers/sisters who get back on the horse.

Oh I'm back on the horse alright done over a 1,200 Km's since. The First couple of sharp turns were a little unsettling, is there gravel? But I'm good now and I've since changed the front tire( More on that in a different thread) so I'm WAY more confident leaning it over ...Still waiting for the OEM cowl and other little bits though....Apparently Customs Canada has them.....

Hey sorry to hear about your spill. I went down on gravel as well, although not on my 599. I happens fast. BTW did you have frame sliders installed on your bike?

Peace..

InvaderZimm
07-27-2008, 08:56 PM
Yeah had the Rizoma's they worked well until the bike hit the soft shoulder, at which point the slider buried itself. The engine casing only got scuffed, I'm Sure that there'd be alot more damage to the tank had I not had the sliders, The up side is I got to upgrade to the New Rizoma pucks for a whooping 26$ :)

It's X-Mas here in Montreal!! Got all my shiny new parts.... I definitely recommend www.hondaparts-direct.com/ all parts got here faster than I expected and they cost a fraction of what the local honda dealer could sell them for. (On a side note, I still love my local honda dealer, he actually showed me what his cost for all the individual parts I needed was, and then told me that he really liked my loyalty, but I'd need psychological help if I ordered them from him) it's all about supply and demand I guess, there are more 599's in California than in all of Canada :(

Those new pucks are sweet. You're gonna like 'em. I upgraded mine AND got a spare set in case I beat them up. At that price, why not? Then I don't have to wait on making an order. Plus... I figure it's good tipover insurance. Stuff like that never happens if you're actually prepared for it with replacement parts on standby.

My thoughts exactly. I got more lucky than anything else, but slinging a 500-pound Nighthawk 750 through tight corners with 3-4 months of riding experience... I was asking for trouble. I didn't know it at the time, I just figured if I got scared I knew I had reached my "limits". Wrong bike, wrong time, wrong amount of experience. It's alright though, I wouldn't change it if I could. Crashing is good for you if your mind isn't right. I'm still a bit of a hooligan, but you learn quickly when to reel it in and sit back. At almost 10,000 miles, I'm getting the hang of the "judgment" part of riding, versus just the mechanics of it.

Taking a $1800 loss on a bike will sharpen you up pretty fast, too.

Man... sometimes I can still feel the fire in my balls from the front-end-meets-guardrail implications on Newton's laws of physics.

I had a scare on gravel last night. In town, slow speed right turn and there was some construction debris right in my line. Felt something break loose a little, front tire I think. Anyway, I slammed my right foot down out of reflex and the tires caught and I was through it. Scary stuff though, whoever said these things happen fast was right!

So, to reiterate . . . DAMN GRAVEL!
